Boarded at Sea! Are they PIRATES? We sail too close to the coast of Venezuela (EP 12)

  • On our way from Grenada to Curaçao, we decided it would be a fantastic idea to visit the Venezuelan islands of Los Aves. We were aware of that the country is in a state of economic collapse, leading to increase crime corruption and piracy, opening up a risk for sailors like us.
But surely no pirates would venture as far as these remote, seemingly insignificant islands? As we sailed past, we saw the unmistakable shape of a few small, open boats, and decided we'd better not stop. As the islands faded into the distance, and we felt like we had escaped, some obscure Spanish rang out on the VHF.
We looked behind us to see a small open boat, four men, and the unmistakable silhouette of an AK47.

Nice one. Good drills handling the Venezuela Coastguard. Consistent charm and politeness-even in adversity-is a sound strategy.

We do have a fucked up situation in our country and a criminal goverment but we still have a beautiful country, I think we deserve a second change and I promise you won't regret . If you're able to go around the national park called Morrocoy , I promise you will love it.

The video is a movie promoting a bad idea about Venezuela. Nothing bad happened but the video scares everyone. There is a Venezuelan Coast Guard Base at Las Aves Archipelago, they carried out a routine inspection of a boat crossing territorial waters. Many boats illegally transport fruits, food, gasoline, diesel from Venezuela to ABC Islands, even drug smuggling. So sad guys you make a video like this without thinking the consequences it can have for many people living on those beautiful venezuelan islands, like Los Roques Archipelago.

Hello, thanks for your message! Totally understand where you're coming from. It's very rare that as a sailor you are boarded by four men with an AK47 whilst sailing offshore, and forced change course. Luckily we didn't have much onboard, so we only lost two bottles of gin. We have met some amazing Venezuelans on this trip and would hate to do anything to damage the country, yet at the same time we would like to tell the story. I will think of a more suitable title/thumbnail.

So sad you seem to think it's appropriate for the coastguard ask for a "gift". The poster gave an account of what happened.. You seem to want to stifle them or at least sugar coat the illegal demands of the coastguard 🙄
