This thief's attempt would hurt the local economy more than people realize. If sailors know there's crime in the area, they won't anchor/dock there anymore and the whole village will suffer from that lack of income. As much as I feel bad for those who live in poverty, the effect of letting people get away with stealing would hurt the community more.

look forward to watching this, we had 3 experiences with theft in 9 years. The first in the middle of a cyclone and we were in the boat!!! The second our 'tender' taken for a joy ride and was just about to head out again when we arrived back after a hospital 'emergency' at 3am. The 3rd our 'tender' again but luckily another boatie saw what happened and returned....the adventures of life...
Our friends lived in the Caribbean. I stayed on their yacht for 4 weeks and in that time there were two attempts to take their rib and on other occasions parts from it and successfully. Their house was robbed in Granada and eventually due to a storm they needed some repairs done on the boat. When they returned to view progress it had been sold for scrap (in parts). They now live in the UK after spending 7 years in that part of the world. Very nice people and sad that the part of the world is lawless still.

Aloha Delos crew. The truth is you will encounter this every now and again wherever the wealth disparity is so huge. When sailing throughout the Pacific we lost more than a few masks, the dinghy would have been gone if we hadn't hoisted it up the way you did (but we took it up so her gunnels were level with the top of the life lines) and one night someone came aboard. All of these instances were dealt with by the Chief and we always (anonymously) got our stuff back. You are a Billionaire to them.

He's not just stealing from boaters, that is bad enough. The real tragedy is that other people won't come back to places where this happens regularly. That thief is stealing potential prosperity from a community.
Then why doesn't "the community" put an end to this, instead of just pleading poverty as an excuse - as they do all over the wold.

That man helping them translate is super cute! I'm glad you were able to find so much help, I am sorry that happened to you all.
It's really crazy that people are defending the thief just because he lives in poverty. Just because you live in poverty doesn't give you the right to steal, nor does it make it right. There is a right and a wrong in this world. Do I think they could have given him a break? That's tricky... in these situations you want the person to learn their lesson. You guys aren't realizing that the boat is essentially their house. Theft is tricky and one of the most serious crimes you can commit, that could of just as easily gone wrong if he had a weapon. Just food for thought.
only westerners have the luxury of debating this, people of the thief's equal caliber understand the severity of theft, and they usually duke out mob justice to get the shitbag. Theft to them is one of the worst things you can do. Plus, this runs the risk of scaring off the wealthy transient foreigners who support the honest workers in the area through legit jobs...it's in everyone's best interests for this theft to be punished
It’s only crazy for people never experienced poverty, never lived in a dog eat dog world. When I was younger, my family lived in an area where police don’t give a shit and the place was basically ran by local gang. U think people think about right and wrong when they’re hungry? U think there’s a little voice in them that’s telling them no when u can barely afford anything and this shinyass boat came in with white people all smiling and happy. I’m not condoning robbery. I’m just saying it’s not unthinkable. And insisting and spending the whole day trying to find him ain’t gonna solve anything. The guys still gonna steal if he sees an opportunity. They are just doing this for their personal satisfaction and revenge. Which I found to be pretty petty
@@vulpeslagopus1 Nobody likes a thief.
I don't live in poverty, but if I did I would do everything to help my family out. However if this guy went on my boat I would have chopped him up with that machete.

Seriously, I don't get it.
Echo Plots I want to give the shark a medal, lol
Well, i can tell you as a sailboat owner and sailor. What would a captain under maritime law do to defend his ship and passengers. I, as a captain would not hesitate to dispense justice. Especially if the interloper was armed. He clearly was as he used a knife to cut the halyard. Remember, he could have just as easily slipped aboard and cut everyone’s throat with his knife. I would say that upon reflection he may do this next time as it would have a better result.
@@RideAdventurous That's what I'm saying. There is nothing inherently wrong with punishing someone who has committed a crime.
Some people seem to project their own funny ideology onto this situation and pretend like these people somehow deserve to be robbed because they're rich and white. Then others encourage inhumane punishment methods that are certainly not in any madagascan law book.
These things happen, I really see no ground to argue about it.
