Douglas Murray: The Cult of Woke & the Project to Lie About Our History

  • With the release of the paperback version of his best-selling book "The Madness of Crowds", Douglas Murray returns to the #SWYSI sofa to chat with Peter Whittle about the current state of the culture wars in Britain and the West. Murray believes the heart of the current #BLM problem we see in the USA is that America's youth are taught that their country has committed more harm than any other. As we've seen, this lamentable view is very real and present in the UK, too. Such ignorance, Murray continues, is most present amongst the members of the elite, whose children have been expensively educated to believe clear and blatant falsehoods.
Although some thought the issue of trans in sports was the "tipping point" that would cause society's pendulum to swing back to a more sensible state of affairs, Douglas Murray argues that recent history is littered with similar "tipping point" moments (not least in the area of Islamic terrorism) and that these have proved, at best, damp squibs.
Nevertheless, Murray does believe the voices of opposition to such madness are growing, hearteningly from the left, too. He highlights the importance of people like JK Rowling making their voices heard to "argue the truth".
To preserve their sanity, Douglas suggests people try their best to depoliticize their lives. He believes that young people have been misled by thinking that purpose in life is achieved through political activism. If one thinks that everything in life is politics, then those who disagree become unmentionables -- people who have bad intentions. That causes a harsh division that is not healthy or sustainable.

My problem with Douglas Murray in this interview is that he defends his position by attacking someone else. He attacks Turkey as a defence for England's history of slavery. The Turks aren't the ones knocking down statues and demanding reparation. The question we should be asking is " What is the truth about these people we venerate by erecting statues to them." and if they are gown to be slave traders or responsible for genocide. Do we want to retain these statues. I am also very disappointed that he doesn't realise why feminists like JK Rowling are against trans women being recognised as women. It seems quite obvious to me that what they are saying is that being a woman is an exclusive club that outsiders can't join. If you are born s man you can never join us. You can only submit to us. This is not feminists seeing the light it's feminists closing the door.

@@anthonyseymour1403 Perhaps Douglas Murray is suggesting that it would be ludicrous for the Armenians to demand reparations from the Turks today?
These are snippets from *The Science of Evil; on Empathy and the Origins of Cruelty*
'By the 1870s Armenians were pressing for
reforms, and during the 1890s at least 100,000 Armenians
were killed. On April 24, 1915, 250 Armenian intellectuals
were rounded up, imprisoned, and killed.
      8 On September 13
the Ottoman parliament passed a law decreeing the
“expropriation and confiscation” of Armenian property, and
Armenians were marched from Turkey to the Syrian town of
Deir ez Zoor. En route and in twenty-five concentration
camps (near Turkey’s modern borders with Iraq and Syria),
1.5 million Armenians died. Some were killed in mass
burning, others by injection of morphine, and yet others by
toxic gas. It is a history that is not often told, and the genocide
of the Armenians is clear proof (if any were needed) the
Holocaust was not unique to the Nazis.'

I didn't go to university , but have always tried to understand what's happening in the world, and have always had an interest in history. These people who decry everything, and want to change history (impossible to do in fact), are just wrong. Thankfully, we have a voice in people like Douglas to counteract them.

It's written by the victors to perpetuate their values and objectives. So let's all stop pretending that the histories we see are somehow a conclusive version of the past - they are categorically not. What is not written about is just as informative as what is not.

These theories are weapons of politics. Marxists use their theories to advance their political goals - and I suspect that's what you're doing. Your theory is so outrageously conspiratorial - and would have required mass cooperation between multiple players at multiple different levels over decades - that it's just a weapon of your politics. There are indeed conspiracies and conspiratorial individuals and institutions. However, they're often at war with each other. And that natural warring instinct would have to be erased in order for your huge collaborative theory to be true. The endless conspiracy theories of such individuals tell us more about the conspiracy theorists than it does about the political world.... At 20 min my jaw dropped. The reliving of history is what has been so frustrating for me. The American project was a project for this exact ideological possession could not rule the day. Instead of getting behind out institutions and leaning on them in a real time they are NEEDED, why I pay taxes by the way, our "educated" believe emotion and ideology should rule and the American project was a problem. It's so childish I'm ashamed.

Are there still calls that “young people need to get more involved in politics”?

These Young People are having the best days of their lives. Finally there's a vision of goodness behind their hamster wheel of debt. Many will will retreat when their allies try to kill them.

IMO young people are terrible with politics, I know my views have changed a lot since I was in my teens/twenties. Most people I know have changed their views when they got older. When young most don't realise how the world works and just follow others without thinking of the consequences. They think they know, but really have no clue. Just look at the riots etc going on now, most are young.

Totally agree; expand your knowledge of the world around you before you despise your own country. Insular zealots decrying their surroundings without the understanding, and being selectively blind to, the depravities, political and personal constraints, and historical atrocities of other nations and continents.
