My man! Great job of going step by step and sharing your knowledge succinctly. I greatly appreciate it. That last move you did with the railings had me twisted for a minute but you demonstrated a better way to assemble the railing that I have never seen before. It was all the pre-work that set it up. Outstanding! 👊🏽👍🏽
great videos, but just to be clear, when you "install the post sleeve over the 4x4 framing" , there is a 4x4 post already set in place, correct? I only ask, because it isn't visible in the video. How long(tall) are your 4x4s? @ 0:40, you can see space at the top of your post sleeve, so wondering if your 4x4 is 37" or 36" or what, as it's clearly not the same height as the post sleeve.
Great videos. Decided to replace my 20 year old deck boards and railings with trex boards and composite railings. These videos were extremely helpful. Thank you. Side note: I went and bought those timber lock lag bolts and was a bit skeptical. After installing the first post (as per your installation instruction), I was amazed how sturdy they were. Thank you.
This was very helpful! My house has concrete front steps that a previous owner covered with wood. That wood is now rotting. I was thinking of recovering the steps with trex/composite. I watched your other video on the post install but I won’t be able to use lag bolts for my posts (I’ll be stuck securing the 4x4 to the concrete). Do you have any suggestions on the best way to handle this project? Can I just use sleepers laid on top of the existing concrete like the previous owner did?
Are you extending your post above the deck and making cuts in the decking to fit around the post ,or are you installing the post on top of decking material ?
Question: The inside dimension of the sleeve is 95 mm ( rib to rib) and the 4x4 post size is 89 mm (3 1/2” x 3 1/2”). Once you insert the sleeve on to the post, there is a gap of 3 mm [(95 - 89)/2 = 3] all around between the sleeve and the treated wood post. When you attach the RSB to the post, the sleeve has to compress that 3 mm in order to touch the post (from both sides, if brackets are attached on both sides of the post). In my opinion compressing composite sleeve by a total of 6 mm (3 mm on each side) is not good. Don’t you have to put 3 mm shims between the sleeve and the post before you attach the RSB to the post?
How do you install a railing like that around an octagon shaped deck. In my case, each side is about 6feet long and it’s approx 33 degree angle between sections.
What screws are used for going into the composite sleeve through to the wood? I know they come in the package but want to know what they are if I need additional.
I would just use 2" "deck screws" found in the fastener section of your box stores-"deck mate" is a common brand. Honestly most exterior screws will be superior to the ones that come in the Trex packet anyway
I am looking at 36" railings at Lowe's, but they don't have 39" post sleeves, only 48". Did you cut them? Also, is that railing less than 36"? If you have 3 7/8" difference from the ground to the bottom of the railing and I assume the same from the top of the railing to the top of the deck post, is the height of the railing from bottom rail to top rail only 31 1/4"? I ask, because I am not finding any Trex products that are those dimensions.
To start, you would cut the 48” sleeve down to 39”, unless you are doing step rail installation. Step rail installation typically requires the bottom post to be longer. To answer your second question, your rail height should be set at 36” minimum to the top rail.
Excellent video, I viewed it to enable a repair and this was just the ticket. Just one favor, I sound like an old man, because I am one, but please wear eye protection (and a mask) when using that beautiful miter saw! Thanks!
Our post was installed into the floor joist framing with a blocking/lag screw method. When we attach to concrete, this is the product we use. You do not need to use this brand. Local Home Depot or Lowe’s should carry a concrete mount application for about a 1/3 of the cost.
I have a 10ft railing and trex's longest rail is 8'. How do I go about connecting them? Also, I have not found a video on how actually use the Mounting Hardware for Cut Rails anywhere! Thank you in advance for any answers!
@@Anthony-fi9ml I called Tex directly and they told me to use the cut-kit for cut railings. Still, I have not seen how to actually connect them or how the finished product looks. Let me know if you find any pictures or videos of it. Also, if you find a distributor near you the kit should be cheaper - I got quoted for $16 per cut kit.
Well finally figured it out. they only sell 6 or 8 foot railings. To connect them you NEED a post to slip the post sleeve over to OR you can buy post mounting hardware and then the sleeve.
It isn’t recommended given the fact that it may void the warranty. If you research the baluster dimensions, both balusters are recorded at 3/4 of an inch width. With that being said, lengths may vary. If the lengths aren’t the same, then the pattern will not be able to work.
question I'm about to re do my existing deck with Trex boards. After that I'm thinking of using one of the deck rail systems that bold to the deck frame down through the Trex decking and attack to the sub structure of course blocking would have to be attached under the posts to the sub structure. My concern is the expansion and contraction of the deck boards getting bound up and buckling as they would not be able to move under the posts so secured. I'm Thinking a cut out where the post would be attached and then add a block of trex under the post to keep it at deck height but not actually being attached to the full length boards, would allow the Trex to expand and contract naturally and the bottom post plate should cover the 1/4-3/8 gap left around the posts. Does that sound feasible????
Hey John; over drill the size of the holes to where the lag bolt is going through the Trex decking board. The oversized hole will allow for expansion/contraction. The fastner rigidity will be achieved attaching to the sub structure blocking.
Why did you not install the black anti rattle strips? They are packed with the infill kit that was paid for. Many people will get mislead thinking they are for glass and not use them.
@@aaronmurphy8271 When I first looked at them I thought “why no drain holes in the anti rattle strips”. In addition, make sure you check the holes on each kit. Line each one ( upper and lower ) on top of each other and check to see if the holes are punched in the same spots. I’m in Trex hell right now. Waiting 3 months for resolution.
no safety glasses on the mitre saw made me wince-yikes! Also, if I understood correctly, you were suggesting taking 1/4" off each side to accommodate for the gaskets that cover your cuts-this would be way too much and would prevent the desired snug fit-I usually suggest 3/16 total or 3/16 each side. Great video and keep up the good work-but safety never takes a holiday!
I haven't installed this. You skipped the first step! What is under that post that attaches it to the deck? That's the one thing I wanted to see. And how to attach before the trim.
This video is actually MUCH better than the ones Trex has on their own product! Thank you for this helpful video.

Good concise video. Thanks for making.

Can this product be used at angled patio entry stairway areas

What holds the post sleeve in place? The 2 screws thru the bracket into the post ? Are they long enough to get into the 4x4 wood?

Dude is a PRO.
Do they not come with a black baffle insert to keep the balusters from rattling?

When you screw bracket into trex post do the screws have to reach the wood inside? I feel like the sleeve is a little oversized for my 4x4
The screws should make contact with the 4x4 post. It eliminates any post sleeve movement.
