Here is a busy swim workout that we do often:
Repeat 5 times:
Swim 5 minutes - max distance
tread water 5 minutes (or do other drownproofing skills - float, bottom bounce, tread no hands, etc...)
Practice different styles of treading using scissor kick, flutterkicks, breast stroke kick, and egg beater kick (similar to an alternating breast stroke kick)
If you really want to learn how to tread - find a water polo player. There are many egg beater videos on youtube that show specific skills of that kick.
Thanks again - StewSmith

I'm an open water swimmer and have discovered the benefits and fun of treading. I take a few months during the warmer months to primarily tread...I add ankle weights and tread doing what I would do on a swim...can't tell you how it's increased my leg strength and tone. I'm up to an hour of treading with leg weights.
If you really want to learn how to tread - find a water polo player. There are many egg beater videos on youtube that show specific skills of that kick.
Will do Steve thank you for the tips!
Who is Steve?
Played polo for a season and it really helped me to get comfortable in the water. (especially w/ egg beater of course). Thanks Mr. Smith
Great vid Samuel!
Water polo
Holy mackerel! Did I just find a skill I might be better at than a SEAL? Seriously though. Water polo players are a great resource for eggbeater technique, but synchronized swimmers are better. Not to speak for all of us, but treading is a resting position for me. It doesn't get real until you have to keep as much of your torso as dry as possible for routine purposes. We hang out and chat in eggbeater. Not much "suck" about it. 😀
What sucks for me are unders. This black person is positive, so I spend so much energy trying to stay underwater that I can hardly make it across the pool. Thanks for your combat side stroke tutorials, Stew. Those helped me get a bit farther before popping up. Finally I figured out that I have to swim them upside down.
To give you an idea of how buoyant I am, I wore 55 lbs of weights the last time I went SCUBA diving and still had to pull myself down the boat anchor to get under. So yeah. I'm not negative at all.
True - you guys win that one!
"You've got to mentally be prepared for the SUCK that is treading." XD So true
i know :( , i can swim but can't tread :(
Thanks for this Stew. I've been trying to work out how to get the egg beater down for a while now. Just didnt get what the secret was with the guys who can seem to do it like its nothing. Good to know that there's no secret technique that makes it easier - just gotta get through the suck.
When you live in California you start learning to tread water at 5 years old when u get thrown in the pool haha
Thanks for this video. One of the best one the egg beater I've seen. That downward force on the shin is I think where I can improve.
This is cool......I need to be there so y'all can show me....I tried this yesterday......HARD WORK!!!!
John Staley so how does is work?
I try egg beater, still drowning lol
Thanks Stew this is very helpful since I'm new at egg beater. I'll be sure to check out the other vids.
Thanks for putting this on RUclips. Very helpful!
"be ready for the suck..." lol for real i was practicing the other day with a brick and things in my legs i didnt even know i had hurt the next day lol.
Thank you for stressing how long it takes to learn how to tread water.
Thank you!
For the eggbeater technique, hows the breathing supposed to be? Cause you keep mentioning keeping your lungs full of air.
Well, at least I know now that this treading water thing does take time. It sucks being fairly lean.
1/2 hour a day 6 weeks, make treading your new religion and it will click. Practice with one leg for 30 seconds, then the other leg for 30 seconds then lay on your bed or floor and do both of them together. work your way up to 1 min and then 5 mins. repetition and practice is key.The issue with treading is its like nothing else out there except for rubbing your belly and tapping your head at the same time. Everyone has their difficulties and things they do with ease. you may suck at treading but you have no issues swimming underwater or ditching your gear. Be grateful for your limitations and then work around them or make them not count anymore because you have destroyed your weakness and made it a strength. Thanks Stew for all of the great videos and information : )
@@MikeMaroneyWhatsupdirtycones I've no issues with underwater and freestyle swimming but when time comes for take breath that time i can't go up in water bcoz i cannot do properly treading 😣 that's why i always prefer to belly-chest waterlevel for swimming.
Yes I love teaching my daughter Amaya how to tread water.
I'm more comfortable with scissor kicks. But I practice the others just in case.
How fast must you do scissor kicks?
Stew, thanks to your vids I am swimming very good and doing better every week. But I need some SEAL training tips for running. I need to get my 1.5 mile down around 9 minutes!
Running up incline is the best way to get faster. Start running in combat boots too
+TheFalloutShot96 I have been specifically told by my instructors not to run in boots. Also I'm on a specific 1.5 mile training program given by the instructors.
+Rush Weaver Ight but the incline running got me from a 12:34 mile and 1/2 to a 8:59 in like 4 months The boots are just to getting use to it
Being at 15 percent body fat (lean/muscular) and not growing up around water this is so hard. My body does nothing but sink like a rock… any tips to increase buoyancy ?
I can tread forever, not sure what kick I do though, now I’ll have to go tomorrow and pay attention to myself BAHAHA
I'm not able to do it :((
i can swim
but i can't thread :(
TheFTAGuy same here i always try to tread but i always end up sinking but i can swim and float
TheFTAGuy Yes that’s not a problem your half way there.
Same here
i can tread but i cant floating
I've no issues with underwater and freestyle swimming but when time comes for take breath that time i can't go up in water bcoz i cannot do properly treading 😣 that's why i always prefer to belly-chest waterlevel for swimming.
Eles fazem parecer tão fácil...
Thank you four years of water polo
Excelente vídeo amei.
I Can't Do That After Trying For 4 Months, Please Give One Easier Tips ...
+Ichsan H. Pranoto - sorry - keep practicing. Watching other videos on water polo swimmers if you really want to learn how to tread.
Like it, thanks Coach
I just do it on another style, frog legs style ... Keep it treading water, but still practicing ... Hope 4 the best ... Thanks
Stew Smith lol speaking like a coach :) Sorry buddy, keep practicing, no other way there. I agree 100%, practice makes perfect
UMBC!
If I rotate my left leg anticlockwise and my right leg clockwise, will that work?
yes but remember to get your knees like if ur trying to touch your chest or like in a sitting position, then release them one by one, leg by leg, when one goes up the other goes down, and remember when a leg goes up try to have as less resistance to the water as possible so it doesn't sink you
Yes it will work.
What kick was the other doing?it's like he is just walking or kicking like riding on a bike
Likely the scissor kick or flutterkick. Both can be used if you are not getting the breast stoke or egg beater kick yet.
@@StewSmith182 but is he kicking like kicking a pedal of a bike?
Well kind of. Left scissor kick and right scissor kick might look like riding a bike but I have never described it way.
@@marlonrealin5469 NO
Got egg beater down i think but i can't do it without using my hands? Am I doing it wrong?
Yes - it is a no hands tread drill.
But I physically can't do it without my hands. I sink lol
+David “The Vegan” Thomas try eating meat :)
Rush Weaver My performance has been a lot better since I switched to a whole foods plant based diet ;) I feel a lot better too.
+Dave The Vegan just a joke bud. Keep up the hard work. You'll get it
I think that's the problem with most black folks, they are negative in the water. I certainly was, I would sink like a brick. Had every technique but it was a real struggle. I was very lean, very dense.
inquizative44 I think it's the same for seasoned runner, they have denser legs due to the muscles
Runner Ho just have to work harder
Well I can't personally speak for "most black folks" I float very easily and I'm black. I think it has to do more with body fat but what's also important is being around water. I learned how to swim and was around the water from a young age, swam in large waves and strong currents in the ocean. Now I'm not an Olympian swimmer but I've picked up the CCS and I've gotten better while I train.
Treading is hard? I can tread for 30+ minutes without my head going under or panicking.
It is for some people - especially if lean or not a swimmer / water polo player
I've no issues with underwater and freestyle swimming but when time comes for take breath that time i can't go up in water bcoz i cannot do properly treading 😣 that's why i always prefer to belly-chest waterlevel for swimming.
At 1:10 lol
I just flutter kick, its easier and less tiring than the egg beater
Blackbeard 007 great
Law enforcement intro physical requires 15 minute water tread... shitty
Be prepared for "the suck".
