  • Today is a very special day for the channel and one that I will remember for a long time. Today I am in Thirsk, North Yorkshire to film a review of the Twisted Land Rover Defender 110 2.3. First of all I would like to say a huge thank you to ‪@TwistedAutomotiveUK‬ for giving me this incredible opportunity. The opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of their very special custom Defenders.
    So, who are Twisted? Taken from Twisted website.
    "Over the years, continued product development and exceptionally high engineering standards have produced a range of Twisted specific components that make the iconic builds. We have simply improved the original. No change is detrimental and occasionally we have created something that people said wasn’t possible. We have worked tirelessly with the best component manufacturers in the world to create enhancements exclusive to Twisted.
    Our engineers and designers know that modifying a Land Rover properly takes more than a set of alloys and privacy glass; each client and vehicle is different and to meet our exacting standards is a bolt by bolt, hand crafted, time intensive process."

    Love this! May I ask what the price is? I think I might have missed it and if it’s in the description then I need new glasses.

    What's the handling like?

      Very good, for a defender of course. Not a sports car but held the road and felt lovely.

    This is slightly uncomfortable. I know a guy who drives one of these. It is his.... "calling card". It forms a part of his presented identity. He is just slightly too keen for people to know what it is. That's OK when you're 18 or even 28, but this guy is in his late forties.
    It goes down the odd farm track, but never really goes anywhere mucky. He often parks it with the front wheels left at a jaunty angle...
    I know Defenders and before that I drove 110 and 90 Land-Rovers. They were for work and although they were lumpy and bumpy and noisy, they did what they did and did it well. That was many years ago. I would not drove one today. I certainly wouldn't want to be "seen" driving one.
    Going back to the chappie with the Twisted Defender... He doesnt know it, but almost everyone giggles as he drives proudly away.... A Twisted Defender is somehow its own parody...
    Driven by people who want to be noticed, it does get them noticed. But not as they hoped it would.
    The joke is revealed slowly, but it is always revealed.

      People surely don’t think this! The twisted defender it just a defender but made better.

      @@JoeTalksCars You may well be right. I may be wrong.
      When I drove a Defender for work, the option was a Land Cruiser. The Toyota was faster on tarmac and handled better. It was easier to drive on loose surfaces and in mud and ruts. It was quieter, more comfortable, less tiring over several hours.... The only place it was (slightly) less adept was on snow and ice. This was in part because we had a wider choice of tyres for the Defenders on the fleet. But the Land Cruiser was never cool.
      The Defender somehow became "cool" among certain people when there was early talk of production ending. That's when most of the modifiers jumped in and started offering "improved" vehicles. It is a little like the "chocolate glazed, almond-encrusted, sugar-frosted Panettone" they sell at the popular supermarkets.... Glitzier doesn't mean better.
      Defenders are mud-pluggers that can be driven on tarmac. They are excellent mud-pluggers and tolerable but noisy, whiney, clattery and bumpy on tarmac. Nothing that Twisted do changes any of that in any significant way. Honestly... Most people do giggle at the middle-aged men (they are ALL middle-aged men) who love to be seen in Twisted Defenders. It's the vehicular version of a new Barbour jacket. It smacks of wanting to be but not quite being. I live on the country. It may be different in metropolitan areas. 🙂🙂

    They are not a car they are built for work

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  Год назад

      Originally yes, not the Twisted one however. These are built for the customer, some will indeed need it for work. One of their customers had his made so it could carry fuel for his aircraft. Most however will drive up and down Knightsbridge and to Waitrose and back. Definitely used as a car in so many cases.

    You’d have to be seriously daft to pay the prices they charge for an old Defender

    • @PointNemo9
      @PointNemo9 Год назад

      Why?

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  Год назад +2

      They put hundreds of hours into each car. Everyone can be as bespoke as you like. These are for people that have the GT3, Ferrari and the likes. There is no equal to this Defender when compared to other tuning companies.

    • @nickhill941
      @nickhill941 Год назад +1

      The difference is the cars you describe are designed to be sports cars.
      A Defender is designed to be a workhorse off road vehicle and not a tarts handbag that costs the thick end of £100k….that’s why LR designed the Range Rover 🤣

    • @mrbutler6527
      @mrbutler6527 Год назад

      @@nickhill941 LR designed a works version, which they classed as the ultimate Defender. Very similar to the Twisted version (including the V8 5.0). Unless you have sat in, and driven one of these - then you don't really know what these 'new' Defenders feel like.

    It looks so incredibly tacky in my opinion. It’s trying to be something that is simply at odds with its own ethos. It is abhorrent on every single level.

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  Год назад +2

      Really? See I like the way it looks like a normal defender but improved. These cars are still usable, people genuinely drive them and use them for very specific things. Not just a show piece.

      @@julian987r4He said.... it looks like a normal defender but improved....and you replied with....isn’t that what the Range Rover is for?
      🤣🤣🤣
      no a Range Rover is not an improved Defender its a headache.....LR never were any good at electrics, defender goes wrong....snip wires buy £5 part and repair, Range Rover goes wrong....park at LR for most of the 3 years you own it and drive a courtesy car (a BMW)....ask how i know.😤
      I agree £140k is too much however each to their own, if you got the money and want to treat yourself go for it..... As for the haters or gigglers mentioned in a comment above.... most of my neighbours have done basic maintenance on their homes, every inch of ours has been gone over and it stands out.... if they giggle thats their problem, we are proud of what we can afford to do.... that chap whos mates laugh at him probably are actually jealous he has the kind of money to afford one of these...... When we purchased our Transit MSRT we had a similar reaction from some that i no longer have any time for, genuine friends however were pleased for us, and yes we admire it when we park it and so do 99% of folks that see it, even my Defenders that are a 1994 300tdi and a 2009 Tdci get admiring looks, just because i treat them as a baby..... you dont like? well move on, lifes too short.😉
      Twisted Defender i like....😁
