Nice playing! Really hard to beat TV Jones pickups. I have a classic in the neck position and a Power'tron Plus in the bridge position on my Gretsch 5655TG. Nice jangle for the clean stuff and AC-DC hard rock in the bridge position 😁👍
You have to back-to-back them to tell. 1st riff 0:08 and 1:46 2nd riff 0:45 and 2:24 Chords 1:05 and 2:47 Ragtime 1:19 and 3:02 BTW, with a good set of headphones the only difference I'm hearing is a tad more breakup on the BS pickup in the chord section, and a little more beef in the last ragtime example. But that makes sense because it's a hotter pickup. Don't confuse 'hotter' with 'better.' Pretty sure if you set them so they were hitting the amp with the exact same force they would sound identical. At any rate, it's all splitting frog hairs.
I surely do love the sound of Filtertrons. The Setzers sound louder and thicker with more lower mid-range. They sound as if they would begin to break up the pre-amp a bit sooner. This could be a problem when loud/clean is what you want. For a bit of crunch virtually all the time, the Setzers seem ideal, but for that classic Filtertron snap, I'd stay with Classics and use a pedal or turn up the amp for crunch. I think I could tweak a good amp to make the Classics sound like the Setzers, but not the other way around.
The Setzer pickups sound similar to P-90's in this video. I have them in my Setzer signature model and am on the fence. I miss the sound of tv Classics sometimes, but if you setup your amp and pedals, they are great pickups. I haven't decided if I love or hate them yet, but so far I'm undecided.
I think the Classics are just fine and I'd keep them in my guitar. I'd like to hear the difference in the T.V Jones Ray Butts and the Setzer pickups. I think the new Gretsch Brian Setzer models now come with those. He's using them in his own guitars.
Great video! Sounds like the Setzer pickups break up a bit more at the same volume? If so, if be inclined, personally, to stick with the classics. Sometimes I need loud and clean.
Both sound incredible to my ears! Hey, I've been looking at TruArc bridges to replace the stock bridge on my Power Jet and just curious which metal you choose for this one?
I put a copper Tru Arc on my 6120 Eddie Cochran model. The stock aluminum compensated Bigsby bridge was terrible. It never rocked with the Bigsby and was constantly out of tune. The Tru-Arc was a big improvement in sound and tuning stability.
Ive been courting electromatic as it’ll probably be my next guitar. But today I played a setzer hot rod signature 6120 (blue) and with the same amp settings, the guitar was drastically nicer in tone, volume, clarity, chime...it was made the beautiful electromatic sound dull. If I throw on some tv Jones pick ups would it bring it closer to the saignature guitar sound?
Hope this helps.. I ve played Gretsch since I bought my first in 1991. Any Gretsch or tv jones pickup will dramatically change the tone of an electromatic. Thats the one place they really skipped on quality with those guitars. I won a solidbody electromatic with the blacktop "filtertrons" and it was ok, but not close to the real thing. Granted it wont sound exactly like a real Gretsch, other factors like nut material, bridge quality etc will come into play, but you ll be close to the sound you like and have an extra $1k in your pocket. Good luck!
I know there’s a huge price difference but I will say, the Electromatics almost turned me against Gretsch. They did for a long time until I played a good one. The expensive ones are for sure worth the tag.
I bought a stock 6120 but yearned for Duane Eddy clean tones so..... I just bought a 5120 with tv classics. THERE IT IS! could not tell on a solid state Fender but thru a vintage Deluxe Reverb or Vibroverb? oh my. Who needs a gorgeous orange 6120? Like women....sometimes the prettier ones dont sound as sweet as the average looking ones!
I’m sorry you don’t like the sound, though I hope you can hear the difference between the classic and the Setzer. Plugged into a Vox ac30, blue alnico. I guess I waisted too much money on my White Falcon and ac30.😢 Ofcourse it sounds way better in real live than on RUclips even compared with using my studio headphones or monitoring.
I'm actually quite jealous lol the white falcon is that ONE guitar I've always wanted. Broham... don't be sorry... that set up sounds GREAT!!!! I think someone has a bad case of the green eyed monster. My electromatic, any electromatic for that fact, does not sound or play as well as a falcon. THAT'S A FACT!!!

Just came across this, that is some mighty fine playin young man !

I thought the Stetzer's were fatter sounding. They would do, but the classics really had the bright jangle especially with cords

I used to be undecided...
now im not so sure....
Muito obrigado! Está decidido! Setzer!

What about compared to the classic+?

I'd like to hear it through a cranked 5e3 Tweed Deluxe, for that Neil Young sound :P
Which one do you like more? I have a shortes scale tone post and it's hard to decide which one to ger
wich you prefer? Great comparisson!

On this Gretsch Falcon it's a Tru Arc Brass bridge.
I have used Tru-Arc bridges for a long time. I have a brass one on my Setzer signature model and love it.

The Setzer's sound more twangy, I guess that's P90ish or telecasterish.

Setzer sounds better
Not sure what you are plugged into but my elecromatic sounds better with the Tv classics and the setzers with just my Laney LX20R
