He has this reputation (as talked about) as a “‘mad man” or “old school”. Yet you hear him talk about the game and he’s talking about Mikel Arteta, a 38 year old coach very young coach who’s being hailed as “fresh & innovative” and yet he has similar values in aspects of coaching and approach with regards to having specialists working on specific areas of the game. Very interesting.

Much maligned after that TV documentary.
But after this where he speaks about pride and the evidence of his passion I think he was sold down the river. The senior players in that dressing room let him down badly and there own standards didn't meet up to his demands.
There have been many others that have failed time and again yet still drag a living from the game. It beggars belief that he never found his way back in.

Man management is vital, you can't rely on some players to act responsibly. Most can't pass the ball never mind passing a betting shop or pub.

John in my opinion has the potential to be a world class manager. I Wish he could have made his way up to the Scottish Leagues, where players tend to thrive and win under more combative and intense forms of management. The spl did the likes of Smith, Ferguson and Jim McLean very well. All of them managers famed for bad tempers and perpetual discipline of self improvement. English players prefer a bed time story and a glass of milk before being tucked in at night. John could have had a real good career in a club like Aberdeen or Raith rovers around that time.
