These scenes crack me up. These characters are oil and water. Bronte is complaining that Georges is dishonest, but Bronte is the one lying to everyone. Every time Georges is forced to lie, he starts with ridiculous stories that could never be believed. It is Bronte who is being cornered in every part of her life. Georges correctly identifies that Bronte wanted the apartment, so she conspired a plan to take it, even if she had to break the law to get it. She blames Georges for her lies, but it is Bronte who lies to get her way. She has to go against her own conscience and has to hide the marriage in order to get George's green card so she can keep the coveted apartment. Lauren is a great character and the actress makes the character wonderfully animated and funny. Her reactions to Georges make the story work so well. McDowell is the lesser artist in these scenes, but Georges and Lauren work so well, that the somewhat detached Bronte is believable. Bronte is so withdrawn from life, that all she is doing is going through the motions so she can get back to her life the way it had been before her phony marriage to George took place. She even lies to herself about her feelings toward George, so she can keep her former life intact, and untouched from change. The seriousness of the issues underlying the story, make this romcom a little different from most. The formula is slightly more sophisticated; the script and performances, particularly the nuanced performance of Depardieu, make the movie a cut above most of the same genre.
Exactly! I feel like this movie is better watched now in 2017 because Bronte sums up millennials; totally entitled, and totally shallow. Whereas Georges is all about enjoying life, and even though he's rough around the edges, he's all about taking life by the horns and enjoying all of it!
Great analysis, very thoughtful. The director is quite famous for this type of movies I think, it definitely shows in the depth of the characters. I thought the movie is based on an antithesis mainly , two characters diametrically opposed on so many levels who find themselves in the other’s shoes, so to speak, a formula used so often in literature and in movies, as you also mentioned. In the end they learn a lesson from each other, Bronte starts acting on impulses and becomes less restrained and self-disciplined while George, whose past is understood to be sketchy, realizes that leading a dishonest life won’t work in the long run. Both actors are great, actually most of the actors in this movie did a good job. Depardieu was greatER in Vatel I would say, a movie with similar undertones.
I love that he's smoking. Now there is no smoking in the [American] movies anymore. :) P.S. I don't smoke myself and I don't want to make others smoke. It is a bad thing.

I don’r know why a parisian man try to stay at USA and get a green card
It's because the women in France are not that good at kissing.
@@jewdavid5627 omg no way all french people must be good at kissing cuz french kissing became popular cuz of french people
Opportunities were greater in the US at that time.
