This is the funniest scene in the film, and yet, it pulls together the humor and the sensitivity of Georges's character. Georges caught all the meaning of Bronte's hope to deliver the garden for the children and put her feelings of disappointment in his poem to hopefully convince Lauren's mother to gift their garden to Bronte. It leaves you wondering if Georges wrote the poem for Bronte or that he didn't lie and he wrote it as a piece offering to get Bronte to help him get the green card with the time to study. At this stage of the story, you are not sure whether to trust his unselfishness, but you get a hint that Georges is much more than just a drifter looking for a new place and a green card. You begin to understand that he is looking for a life.
It is a wonderful mix of reality and cinema that Peter Weir wove Gerard's biographical details into the character of Georges. Gerard had a difficult life just like George, and Georges's heart tattoo depicts Gerard's true feelings about honesty in his acting and plausible script lines instead of the usual American comedic redundancies. The scene where they share their life stories is beautifully acted and clearly is about their being able to tell each other the truths of who they are and how they arrived at who they are. Weir is not just introducing Depardieu's talent to the American audience, but he is introducing the real Gerard Depardieu through his well scripted character in the film. The characters begin to understand each other as they memorize what they will have to tell the examiners at INS. This to me, is a genuinely unique part of this script.

Flavia Eckholm what a deep understanding of the scene and the movie! I agree. I’m an immigrant married to an American and I kept this wonderful movie in mind during my entire green card process.

I think Depardieu played the piano better when he was in "My Father the Hero"!
