just brilliant acting. these two really have great chemistry in this movie. no sex, no nudity, no vulgar talking but only brilliant acting that makes this a masterpiece even though it’s only a minor romance. he got emmy for this role. I saw this movie only once when I was in my teens and only remembered it vaguely so it was as if I was watching for the first time. haven’t had such emotions since very long. absolutely brilliant
@@svamandolin3546 He really is awesome. Seen thousands of movies, had my soft spots already for some directors-couldn't believe there was something or someway a director could amaze me with, anymore. Funny thing though,i have seen some of his films before, without making a connection. Master and Commander, The way back, Truman Show. Yet it somehow clicked when i saw The year of living dangerously, wow, this is something really nice. Maybe the music of Vangelis, another genius, had something to do with it. Gallipoli is awesome too,Picnic at Hanging rock,The last wave... i even saw his first movie, the Plumber. Awesome director, probably the best from Australia.
My favorite movie. The ending is so happy, I love how they laugh with pure happiness, and know they will make it work even though he has to go. Love the whole movie!
It's a little bit more than gentle. :) To me, that's what makes is great. I find it to be one of the most passionate I've seen on screen, au contraire ! And McDowell's reaction to the kiss is masterful.
Love that he ended up naming the song he kept humming/composing after HER, and then he wrote a true love letter on the back of it ... and a hint that he wants to see her one last time for a "goodbye." The way they stare at each other through the window it's clear that they've fallen hard for each other. What a powerful final scene between them. Gerard and Andie did an awesome job in the movie.
When she says, "I don't care about the greenhouse," she found the kind of love of which all her romantic ideas and ideals were merely shadows. That's all the really counts, really.
He goes to meet her knowing how he feels and about the deportation situation but isn't sure that her feelings are reciprocated. She looks up from her coffee and they lock eyes. Him being the masculine and her being the feminine separated by an invisible barrier. They just stare into each other's eyes for a moment as he searches her heart. Then he gives her a suggestive, yet unsure smile asking if his feelings are true. She confirms with a smile of her own then suddenly moves in the direction of the entrance. They meet there as she leaps into his arms and confirms that he is indeed not alone. They kiss for the first time in the movie expressing and releasing the tension that has been building. She sees the deportation officer behind him in their embrace. The look on her face says it all. Daggers for eyes. He dismisses the officer and focuses back on her and admits to what has happened. "It's ok. If I leave quickly you get to keep your beautiful greenhouse." "I don't care about the greenhouse." Their love is finally acknowledged. The officers are urging him to come with them. As he goes to leave again, she let's out the most feminine, sexy, "no!" any woman could possibly yell and runs into his arms. You can hear the thud as she lands as close to his heart as possible. They renew their vows and exchange the most beautiful laugh ever captured on screen as they see how ridiculous they both were for ever fighting their feelings for each other. They place a ring on each other's finger and say "I do." The proud look he gives just before he walks to the car for the last time says it all. "I got what I really wanted out of all this, and it isn't a greencard." He gets to the car door and pauses to look back at her standing before him. Totally present. BOOM. The ending being left ambiguous. Does he say "I'm not leaving" or does he go, and then get her to come with him? And more importantly, does it even matter? Fantastic. This movie seems to capture so much about love. It does not paint a perfect picture, and takes you from a relationship of embarrassment and uncertainty, to understanding and love. The song at the end is pretty damn awesome too ;)
I think he expected her not to not be at the coffee shop, but to his surprise there she was! I knew there was something special about this movie when I first saw it on HBO as an 11 year old. Now as an adult I see it is a masterpiece!
One of the greatest unsung rom-coms ever. My favorite moment is when he explains to her that love and hate are deeply entwined, that it's impossible to love everything about a person. How could a girl NOT fall for him?!
Green Card, although a lovely, touching and smart little romance, is a minor Peter Weir movie. But the ending is one of my favorite movie endings, still today, thirty years later. More than Weir's directing (how powerful is that shot reverse shot of their last kiss !), more than the wonderful (and wonderfully used) Eyes on the prize, it's McDowell and Depardieu's performances that sell it. The out of this world charisma Depardieu then had + the look of absolute, total infatuation in her eyes = it doesn't get more romantic than that, even in a minor little movie.
The ending is superb. Critics don't like this ending, but critics like when the script hits you in the face, so their reviews aren't so difficult to acknowledge as the only acceptable truth. Their first embrace is mutually conveying that they have feelings for each other, Bronte learns the truth that Georges is going to be deported, Georges tells Bronte that he hopes she will someday join him where he is going. The second embrace is Bronte reaffirming her feelings forcefully and committing to this relationship by wearing the ring, Georges now can fight the deportation with Bronte's permission, and commitment, he can expect that she will follow him or she will wait for him to resolve his status. By wearing the rings, and reaffirming their vows, the reality of the marriage has to either be dissolved or confronted; the breakup or resolution has to be a deliberate act. They can no longer pretend that nothing changed. He teaches her to connect in a deeper, emotional way and she teaches him that he "can hear the music again" with her in his life. This is the ultimate in romance. With a very tight, creative script, fabulous Depardieu nuanced acting, great chemistry for Andie McDowell and good editing; this movie is a guilty pleasure. Who wouldn't fall for a guy who is creative and thoughtful enough to bring you a coi for your pond instead of an ordinary flower?
Peter Weir the finest Director who captures such sensory beauty like the shot of Bronte with cup and rain with door open. Witness, Master in Commander, Truman show even. He has a texture in his movies that are poetic
Depardieu is such a wonderfully natural actor. In this scene, he is obviously very subdued, but he doesn't betray to Bronte that he didn't pass the INS test. Bronte says it went well, but Depardieu shows with his expression, that he is suppressing that he is going to lose every hope, and will be deported.
Imagine if you read this as a Book then saw the Film. The actors are incredibly accurate. Brilliant filming and performance. I didn't like 1990 very much. Watching this film lifted me.
This letter ..sends chills up my spine! Africa Teusday, Cherie...the elephants have been reckless again...so reckless I just can't sleep! I would like to say our last goodbye...before this next safari!

Absolutely loved this movie. I fell in love with a man who was the total opposite of those I dated. He was French too. He’s not much to look at according to my friends, but his soul is perfect and in tact. Therefore, he’s very handsome to me. 💕
MEH I thought they'd get together. He should have said at the interview, "Oh! Merd! I meant, Montecarlo. Wait is that what I said? My English is not so good." He should have pretended that what he meant by "that is the one I keep forgetting" meant that he kept forgetting the name and kept calling it something else. They should have been together, dammit!
lalahland what man knows the name of face cream. Lol but they will be together. They just committed to each other and she will go to France! Like the song says, everything is gonna be alright. 😀
They ended up “getting together.” We just don’t know where! That makes the end so much more romantic-they love each other so much that they’ll find a way.
Either she had some serious, legitimate chemistry with him or she is a better actress than I thought. Just tiny things she does with her hands makes me wonder.

He is being deported. But the ending is hopeful, because now that they have declared their love, Brontë can always go to Paris. There are the situations will be reversed, and he will be the citizen and she will be the immigrant who needs a green card. I’m not sure how the INS Handles these things, but if the couple were to live together for a year and get remarried, I think Georges could return.

Η υπαρξιακή μουσική του Hans Zimmer απογειώνει το σενάριο και τη σκηνοθεσία, θυμίζοντάς μας ότι κάποτε ο συνθέτης έγραφε αξιόλογα score.

This is an interesting phrase. Can a soul be stolen? I really wonder. I once got told from someone he felt I stole his soul. I never understood it.
Best Rom-Com in the last 100 years 💯
