  • Here are the 3 most important things to get right when buying your first pair of trail shoes, to avoid injury and slipping & sliding around on muddy trails.
I'm Claire Maxted, founder of Wild Ginger Running and I have tested hundreds of trail and fell shoe after co-founding and editing Trail Running magazine for 7 years. This film will help you find the right pair for you.

    Salomon Speedcross trail shoes: amzn.to/2IoMJLT
Transparency: I contacted the brand PRs to request a Inov8 Roclite 305 and Salomon Speedcross 4 for this film as they are popular first trail shoe choices. Apart from kindly providing product, this film is not funded by any brand or shop. My views are my own.

Thank you very much for the very useful info. You said a 'jack of all trades' shoe might be the best choice, do you think Salomon Sense Ride, Saucony Peregrine 8 ISO, Brooks Caldera, New Balance K.O.M and La Sportiva Bushido are good choices? I'm looking for a shoe that I can also use to run on a flat surface(road/earth/gravel) or even go for a day long hike on steep rocky terrain, a shoe I can wear every day for a month long trail-run/hike summer vacation in the Med, I know I'm asking too much but it must be an all arounder out there-after all is not for racing but for pleasure. With so many good shoes it's hard to make a choice or even narrow down to few models, I'm confused. Any suggestions anyone?

Thnx for the very useful info/links especially the one about how to get stronger knees/shoes for mixed use. I have couple of Q's though.
Choosing a shoe with plenty of sole like the Hoka I think will save my knees but does it also have the responsiveness to navigate in tight corners?
How important is the rock plate? Some heavy duty shoes like for ex the Saucony Xodus don't have one. I like also occasionally to run over rocky terrain, buying a shoe without a rock plate would that be a mistake?
Salomon undoubtedly make great shoes but most of them have this Quicklace System, I read comments people complaining they had to keep adjusting all the time or it would come loose etc., what is your experience/advice about it?

great video! thanks! what's your thoughts on "heel hug"? I've just purchased a pair of Brooks Cascadias as my first trail running shoe. I was recommended them as they are not a million miles from my regular tried and tested road running shoe Brooks Glycerin. the fit up front is great, the midsole drop is similar to my road shoe.. but my heel does have a small degree of movement in the cascadias. is that OK? I've read that heel fit should be pretty snug. thanks.

Hey Lau, yes the heel should be fairly snug but a small amount of movement is often ok, you can try locking the heel down with tying the laces a few different ways, sorry I don't have a film on that but Harry Runs does here ruclips.net/video/OBbc6TackDQ/видео.html I hope that helps. If you do find them rubbing a tiny bit then I find double layer socks help with this, and I do have a film on how that works here ruclips.net/video/3-tRl-YFH2o/видео.html Hope that helps! Let me know how you get on! Claire

I loved my Salomons - my first trail running shoes - with the funky lacing system.. I lost one in some deep mud during a race once, it stuck and I was just running in my sock.. also, they made me deaf on hard surfaces as they had no cushioning.. literally my ears were filled with the sound of my own steps.. weird, huh?

Altra Lone Peak is my shoe of choice these days.. perfect.. :)

My feet are long and medium width but they love the wide toe box. Super comfortable, bit heavy, loads of grip probably sums them up.
