By 8 min, he´s a tragic-comedian like the New Atheists. He´s a little unclear about the Greek situation, in which Socrates etc were spiritual philosophers. He´s wrong about the basis of Europe´s good social system, but he is right about reform. "It hasn´t worked for 2000 years....." That´s the problem. From Universities to abolishing slavery, Christian spirituality led the way, and up to the UN by FDR. Moller´s "atheism" is what? It´s secular humanist extremism equating outrage and the irony of hypocrisy with the issue, and his own intolerant anti-religious ideology. In Social Europe it almost seems to work, because social values after WW II were set up strongly. The analysis needs to address individual needs, which corresponds to spirituality, and modernization.
I participated in a 40-person group exercise between atheists and people with a spiritual/religious model of moral ethics. Several questions were submitted to BOTH; like how important is the preservation of a human life? The spiritual group answered "Very important because Life is sacred" The atheist group answered "IT doesn't matter, it's just a life... like any other living species " Suppose you were having a HEART ATTACK and on the cusp of dying without someone to help, which of the two groups would you prefer to be near you????

I'm an agnostic atheist and I'm quite interested on the topic but I really couldn't keep going after like 4 minutes listening to him. thought it might change, but it didn't seem it would. he's condescending and too sure of himself.
I don't believe someone who doesn't understand religion has the authority to tell people what the future of religion is. It's like me saying I know the future of medical procedures, but I'm not a doctor and don't work in a hospital, but I think I have the right to judge what I don't know or understand.
The religious pay the price for the non-religious to thrive. They work the systems that support the freedom of the modern world. Everything adds up at the end of the day, some people just don’t have a choice what side of the equation they are on.
I left at 1:52..... people are so stereotypically predictable... I could tell he was one of those rude self absorbed athiests before he even opened his mouth..
This talk was pretty superficial. He kind of treats religion as this sort of affliction that we need to cure, when in reality it is something generated by mankind throughout history and obviously serves a purpose. Being religious mostly makes people feel calmer about themselves and their lives, it gives them a moral foundation and a community, and it gives them a sense of purpose. Religion promotes social cohesion and altruism. It takes us away from obsessing about ourselves and replaces the focus on God. Of course old doctrine is problematic in many ways, but it's unfortunately a kind of inevitability.
There's a reason there's billions of religious people on the planet... And there's a reason that countries that become more atheistic tend to dwindle and stagnate (eg, they stop having kids, amongst other things) *looking at every country that embraced state atheism
No conflict ever was fought only about religion but religion had a enormous impact to the conflicts or even was the main reason for almost all conflicts in our history
This sounds like religion to me - Netanyahu: "Israel is not a state of all its citizens. According to the basic nationality law we passed, Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people, and only it."
The question should be; what would be the nature of such a being as "God" if god actually did exist? Just because humans have imagined a god in their own images doesn't mean there is a lack of something that we might perceive as a deity. Basic physics; matter is a specialized subset of reality that is produced by the interactions between various energy fields. We see it as "solid" solely because that allows us to navigate reality well enough to seek food & shelter & in order to reproduce. Look up Bernardo Kastrup to see explanations that make it clear that the only thing that truly exists is consciousness. Arguably, there is a transcendent field of consciousness (of which we are a subset) which might better fit the description of "God" than anything humans have created. Of course, while there may be some useful truths that religion can access, for the most part, Mr Moller is correct, religion is a very destructive force for humanity.
Cause Hinduism lost all it's charm in Later Vedic period when the upper caste started to rule out every thing and said that the caste in which you are born is job you will do. It became too rigid and you can still see the consequence very now and then there is a violence reported against the lower caste people which it not there fault that they were born in the wrong caste.
I like the Early Vedic where every one was so chill do whatever you want mindset but that happens to every religion the priest always tend to become greedy and try to have as much power a possible on others
Hinduism, unlike Christianity and Islam, is a private treasure, not to be imposed on others. There is no proselytization. Actually for those who know it - it is not a religion. Religion is an English word, not suited at all for Sanskrit word Dharma for Hinduism. Even an atheist can be called a Hindu. I challenge you to study it before denouncing it just by carelessly lumping it with all 'religions'.
If he is advocating for 'religious' belief to be held only as a private matter, wouldn’t this very TEDTalk go against this? Atheism is a worldview conviction on the existence of the supernatural. Could no atheist freely express his atheistic conviction in public? What might be the implications of living in such a world? Alternately, he might be suggesting that yes, atheistic views should be acceptable to discuss publicly because it is not a religion, but ideas dubbed 'religious' because of their affirmation of the supernatural should be kept as a private matter, out of the public discourse. If that is the case, what makes this one worldview exceptional above the worldview of others? While it would be quite wonderful for anyone who agrees with the view, it would take away the voice of any dissenting opinion.. and ultimately be a return to a ‘dark age’ of sorts, the only difference would be which party is in power and which is silenced.
Religion became the Scapegoat for all human issues of power, corruption, ego, and vice. Sounds more like less of a lecture and more of a prejudice rant. Combine all problems in the world and name it religion- case solved by the speaker!
I once read an article about the distinction between a religion/ cult. The writer of that article underscored the obvious element of the CULT that might distinguish it from a religion. It has to have a CHARASMATIC LEADER . He also noticed that both Christianity and Buddhism have a charismatic leader that these two religions are named after. He also added that Islam that has no name Of the leader in the name of the religion was called ORIGINALLY Muhammadism. But is that true about Islam. I have always thought that Muhammedinism is ENGLISH TERM invented by the British during colonial time.
One thing I would like answer, why jas there always been gods or a god, what ever form taken there is account of a god being worshipped in the most basic to the most advanced civilisations. Can someone explain this?
I think religiosity (respective the human tendency to believe in supernatural stuff) is a product of evolution. This would 1) explain why almost all human cultures we know of developed some kind of religious tradition and 2) explain why these religious traditions are as different and incompatible as they are. If there were a real god, or real gods, why would geography decide in which god one believes? And why would there be so much disagreement among believers in the same god(s)? (= so many different Islamic traditions, so many different Christian denominations etc.)
Yes there has always been a god cause it reassures us that the person who is doing wrong to us would be punished by the God cause the person itself does not have that power. It our fear that there will be a afterlife or something where they will be awarded. God is also hope for hopeless people who have no one to turn to. The countries which have high number of Atheists are rich have safety, better laws to protect people . When people feel protected they do not need God anymore. _SIMPLE AS THAT_ Get it.
A point concerning Israel: A reason why it exists is that they are getting considered as Jews not only that they consider themselves Jews in the first place.
Actually it is true. It started about 5years ago and is still going on. I went to talk about it at a Buddhist temple. I forget the region but u can look it up. The difference is, this is the 1st time in Known history. Other religions have always been.
"i am an atheist and there is three reason for that" LOL every atheist have different reasons for being an atheist bcoz there is nothing like atheism on logical basis
We are all born Atheists Even religious people are Atheists when it is another religion - except for religions like Hinduism that preaches respect for all - only Hindus are the True Theists
I think both in western Europe and the America it is dangerous to attend places of worship if you are not white protestant or White CATHOLIC at least at the COMING 100 years and if you are an OBSERVANT and you love to attend go to places of worship that are reformed and make sure to connect to the meaning of the GOSPEL.

For me it is hard to see why anyone would convert from one religious belif to another. What are reasons for that. I mean, you rarely see atheist become religious.
Births, deaths and marriages require rituals. Religion does ritual very well. However, the power of the priests has decreased dramatically. Personally, I believe in God, how else to explain the universe and everything in it down to nano size particles.
@Ifat H It is true. People are pressured into religion. People are given a choice between a religion or death. People are killed, or fired from jobs, driven from towns, shunned from family and "friends" for leaving a religion.
Mohammed Ibrahim. He forces nothing on anyone. He clearly states his wish for religion to naturally fade away. With no pressure, no outlawing, no shunning. Any has to choose to hear him by tuning into his talk, and can easily tune out at any time. Go watch a cat video, or a religious video. He won't mind.
@@crobeastness Do you have a source for that?
The spiritual group answered "Very important because Life is sacred"
The atheist group answered "IT doesn't matter, it's just a life... like any other living species "
Suppose you were having a HEART ATTACK and on the cusp of dying without someone to help, which of the two groups would you prefer to be near you????

The religious pay the price for the non-religious to thrive. They work the systems that support the freedom of the modern world. Everything adds up at the end of the day, some people just don’t have a choice what side of the equation they are on.
This is a blemish on the TED brand. I can’t see any redeeming features in this small-minded, highly imbalanced rant.

God would give everyone a chance and freedom of speech no?
And there's a reason that countries that become more atheistic tend to dwindle and stagnate (eg, they stop having kids, amongst other things)

Man created god in his own image and it's interesting that god's beliefs are very similar to man's beliefs
He loves making bold claims without backing them up with any evidence.

Why do people always link Hinduism with caste?
Cause Hinduism lost all it's charm in Later Vedic period when the upper caste started to rule out every thing and said that the caste in which you are born is job you will do. It became too rigid and you can still see the consequence very now and then there is a violence reported against the lower caste people which it not there fault that they were born in the wrong caste.
I like the Early Vedic where every one was so chill do whatever you want mindset but that happens to every religion the priest always tend to become greedy and try to have as much power a possible on others
You have a point
It has to have
a CHARASMATIC LEADER . He also noticed that both Christianity and Buddhism have a charismatic leader that these two religions are named after.
He also added that Islam that has no name
Of the leader in the name of the religion was called ORIGINALLY Muhammadism.
But is that true about Islam. I have always thought that Muhammedinism is ENGLISH TERM invented by the British during colonial time.

All religions have ended. He also didn't say religion will end. But institutional religion should.
Though quite entertaining, not very well informed. Sad.
