Girl I agree it’s 100% on point. I remember what my hair said to me the first time I saw one of her videos it was “ this is the way, walk in it and stop abusing me.”😂😂😂
Still recovering from the first and absolutely LAST time I went to a hairdresser and she YANKED like ¼ of my hair out. Cried so much and didn't even like how the hairstyle turned out. Been comb free ever since. Been natural for 4 years now and comb free for the first 2 years...now just like you I use it atmost 3 times a year 😊😊
Have had a similar experience. I realised after I left the salon, that she had no idea how to work with type 4. It’s a very unique hair type which requires trained, skilled practitioners. The salon specialised in curly hair but not super curly hair, which is super beautiful but requires gentle respect.
I'm not afraid of a comb or brush, but rather the person holding it. like my mother had the patience to be gentle with my hair, but my aunt???!!! wow in her hand a comb was just a weapon
Acceptance gave me freedom! Accepting that my hair is normal and beautiful just how it grows and behaves gave me so much confidence and freedom. I genuinely enjoy the complexity and mystery that comes with it, frizz and all 😅 I'm still learning to be patient when finger detangling, though. For now, I think I'm finger detangling 70% and combing once I feel like I've done the best I could with my fingers. Great video, as always 💛🌻
Natural hair, to me, means accepting my hair as it really is, not fighting its true nature. My type 4 hair loves being slightly tangled, which is why detangling is such a challenge. I finger detangle to prevent locs, but that’s all she needs. I break up the party as best I can and then move on 😂.
Since some hair may be prone to breaking, I understand why you'd advise not to comb. But I PERSONALLY believe this doesn't apply to everyone and everyone should do what it feels right for them, with the hope they know about their hair. I personally tend to have freezy ends if I don't comb(though my texture's pretty smooth). Combing helps define my texture /curls even more. I apply leave conditioner whilst doing this, and get like 0% breakage and very little shedding. This ain't intended to be a hate comment, just personal experience. ❤
I see where you are coming from. totally agree with doing what’s working. I also believe that some of the practices we have aren’t suitable necessary or even beneficial to our hair. combs define most curls and most 4c hair naturals have frizzy ends. your needs and uses for a comb are similar to most of us
I have watched so many videos, and I felt I must have the worst hair because when I detangle my hair if I let that hair go it just jumps back into itself and tangles all over again. Even when I braided my hair with the synthetic hair when I took it down I lost sooooooo! much hair, yes it grew but boy did I loose hair. Thank you I am 70 years old and have been fighting with this hair for at least 60 yrs.
Last year, I used a shampoo that was not right for my hair, it became super tangled. At the time my hair was tailbone length. Had my daughter detangle and trim it for me by the time it was done my trim was shoulder length. That was it for me. I started all over again with the right products, finger detangling, brushing only on wash day, with the Unbrush, put it in big twists and put it up until next wash day. No combs at all. One year later, my hair is between my waist and tailbone, mid way there again.
Your shrinkage is beauiful. It is such a unique beautiful state of your hair. The physics and chemistry around why your hair does what it does is amazing
I learnt a lot about natural hair care from green beauty and my hair is growing for the first time in my life. I’ve managed to retain about 2 inches in 5 months. I love your content because we have similar hair texture and your advice works for me
I use my fingers when Im further in my stretch. 10 weeks and up. By this time, my hair is up. I wash every two weeks. Your hair looks really soft and hydrated. Yes, do a video on how to hydrated. Have a great weekend. God bless you 🙏🏽 ❤
For ladies who have difficulty detangling, or deal with SSK's and a lot of splits I think it's probably best to switch to finger detangling only. Hate to say it, but I don't have a problem detangling my hair. I detangle in the shower on sopping wet hair filled with conditioner, which takes me about 10 - 15 minutes. I use a combo of finger combing and using a comb. My favorite comb is one my grandmother gave me back around 2009 or 10 it's a Hercules Sageman rake comb. I didn't understand back then how great the comb was. I just loved it because she gave it to me. All of my combs are either seamless or bone they are more expensive than regular combs, but they are much easier on the hair.
My hair started growing after I stopped combs and washing less. I generally wash once every six weeks. I alternate between twists and natural braids.Yes I do my own hair. It's hard to find a hair dresser who specialises in natural hair and if you do they are super expensive
They also want to cut off any length you've accumulated with their "trim schedules". If they see shorter lengths that are catching up, they scream split ends and get to chopping without ever actually confirming split ends. Or they just flat out can them dead ends (whatever that means), anything to cut. Don't get me started on the overcharging. I don't think my hair grows very fast so I'll pass lol. I don't know the last time i used a comb, but I've seen less hairfall as a result. I wash as needed, and if i find any tangles too small for my fingers, a sewing needle does the trick lol.
Hey girl please do video on moisture training your hair. Listen, I have learnt so much since finding your channel. I'm more committed now than ever to this natural hair journey.
I agree that type 4c hair in general is different from other types of hair. It needs a different kind of care due to it's tight curls uniqueness. I believe that type 4b does not need to use combs either. My curls are more define when I don't use combs whereas when I use my fingers.
I totally agree about the combing . I also think our hair just likes to tangle . I literally have to detangle 3 times during the course of my wash day .I used to use a wide tooth comb to detangle because it was much easier to clean afterward . But I notice I would still have a lot of shed hair . So I’ve gone back to my brush for detangling and it works so much easier . I use less product to because the brush helps coat my strands more.
Hi hun iv started to NOT USE A COMB ON MY HAIR AND OMG MY HAIR IS GROWING I HAVE 4C TIGHT CIRLS X everything youv said its so true my hair breaks and sometimes snaps my hair drys out so i moisterize my haiir everyday its in cainrow im wearing wigs becouse its winter in the uk x
Combing 😊, only on wash day (monthly) after detangling with fingers, to remove any shed hair. For rehydration, fingers only. I'm rebuilding her hair after a set-back doing the tension method for drying / stretching (with a heat protectant). Her hair does not like heat, nor being dried out, within 6-8 months, I noticed the negative effect and was modified 😢
Something we need to remember is that within the 4C hair type there are different *textures and densities* . Finger detangling may not work for all textures - fine, coarse etc- . Tried it for months last year and ended up with horrible knots despite a good hair care routine. I’ve done back to wide tooth comb detangling every 3-5 weeks. Less hair loss and stress on the hair. Buttt….im gonna give finger detangling another try and see what happens.
I havent combed my hair in years either but I have thining hair and fine hair strands. Fine hair tangles pretty bad. Knots and tangles and hair strands sticking together. No brush no comb will ever get in there. I have no choice but to deal with this nest of issues with my fingers. It takes FOREVER FOREVER FOREVER and is never fully detangled. I get fed up, so I detangle it as good as I can then put it in 2 strand twists with no added hair. I would love to brush it... It won't happen. One tangle out then next tangle reappears. Laaaard me tired!!!!
I tried avoiding detangling tools for 5 months. I used to do medium twists, recycle sections and finger detangle thoroughly. That would take such a long time and by the fifth month my hair was matted in some sections and I had to cut off some hair at the crown. I would never exclusively finger detangle or recommend it to someone who has fine 4c hair. But I feel like people with thick hair strands can actually get away with exclusive finger detangling.
@@CoilyDiaries do you know that I can detangle my fine hair before shampoo and after shampoo that hair gets matted as heck..I wash in sections and in a downward motion. I noticed that some products and shampoos are culprits. I used Miche products for a very long time and recently I noticed that they tangle my hair and since stopping using them I have better wash days.
The last time a comb was in my head was 2019 after a hair dresser impatiently washed and blow dried my hair to put into corn rolls and add the curls to the corn rolls. She was frustrated that I did not have dried blown out hair (which I did not know was the standard) and she had a client scheduled after me. So she was very harsh and my hair was flying as she combed and dried it. I told her to trim it as well. She cut it blowed dried… easily 5 inches or more. My hair went from past braids length and thick and full to shoulder length when stretched. A comb or person has not touched my hair since.
@Moisture Train, yes please, definitely interested in this video. I have adapted your 'Hydration' method for my daughter, 4C, low porosity, dense strands. When I tell you, the difference is night and day. The Moisture infused is unreal, her hair feels lush. I can also attest that those plaits hold the moisture for 3 weeks, but I rehydrate every 7-14 days. Thank you Queen ❤
Thank you for this video i have realised on my natural hair journey that i will never be detangle free, so i detangle as much as it's necessary using my fingers, only.I rarely use a comb and would love to stop using it loving your content and your hair ❤❤❤
@@YOUR-WORD-IS-YOUR-BOND not the case. I washed and used liquid leave in conditioning. I think my issue was not really knowing how to take it down. Half my hair was on the floor 😭. I even paid the braiders to take it down and that was an even worse experience with Rupert or hair
@ramahh979 How long did you leave in the protective style? I would leave mine in for 3 months with no issues... but I did use what my grandma said to use on our hair, not this new stuff...
@@YOUR-WORD-IS-YOUR-BOND I can see that making a difference. My grandmother swore by Sulfer 8, but I haven't used it in years. I keep it in max 6 weeks. My hair does grow out fast, then tend to mat or tangle at the roots of I leave it in longer.
Hey sis, I’m back watching this video. My plan was to only comb my hair once every three months. I’ve been reconsidering using combs at all for all the reasons you listed. I’m going on a no comb challenge this year. I’m excited! I’ll pivot if something goes seriously wrong, but I’ve gotten pretty good at finger detangling. Just wanted to thank you for the video! I hope I’m pleasantly surprised when it’s all said and done. Have a blessed weekend! 🌺🌸🌸
Wishing you well on the journey! Key is to keep your hair stretched moisturised and in small parts (twists braids etc) and only detangle one small section at a time
4c here, as well as 1 of my daughters, over the laat 12yrs, ive seemed to have fought one way or another with my hair washing, combing ect.... this video helps me thank you kindly.
I have kept my hair for 5 years and never used a comb. When i want to stretch it i thread plait myself or i twist it.I have never blow dried my hair.Im loving my natural journey
Hi Coily D., I am sort of in a catch 22 about the same thing. Currently dealing with sigle strand knots and a lot of rough ends. I am just now getting comfortable with being willing to accept trimming. The last time my hair was straightend was about a year and a half (maybe two) . I am dead set against straitening it again until the ends are healthier. And keeping combing tool usage to a minimum (especially since I am tender headed. Here is the catch, since all of my center finger joints have not been able to bend since late 2018, it has caused me to have to rely on the help of a hairdresser to wash condition and detangle my hair. For a long time now, she has been telling me to comb through it everyday to keep down the knots. ( I already know that's wrong). And get this.....she is also eager for me to let her heat straighten my hair...(i am not even about ready for that either). I am already frustrated with strands being lost to knots. I don't want to hurt anybody "s feelings ,but I have attempted to explain to her that not only can I not grip a comb well, but everyday combing is too much and heat pressing is out of the question until the ends are no longer rough. Can you recommend a way to get her to understand this without causing strife?
Hi there, Thank you so much for reaching out and am sorry you are dealing with stiffness in your fingers. First can I just say no one can provide the same care patience and attention to your hair as yourself and eliminating combs for many would be seen as extreme especially for someone who can’t do their own hair. So if I were you I would make some sacrifices. Get a Revair that can stretch your hair with cool or hot air. Try not to frustrate the person looking after your hair because you actually need their help. Allow her to use combs, trim your hair or even use heat. However, get her to do a long term style like crochet or some medium sized twists or braids. Take them down every 3 months and allow her to care for your hair again. This way you have a system going until you are at your desired length. With heat use you may need more trims due to the split ends but that’s ok. Putting your hair in braids or cornrows for that long helps u retain length while still keeping some order and stretch to your hair so you don’t have too many tangles At takedown. Once you are at your desired length, consider becoming a straight natural, twisted natural, blowout natural etc so you can manage your hair easier. I know you were expecting a different response but your health and your mental health should be a priority above your hair. Good luck 🌺❤️
Thank you for being bold enough to teach/tell us the obvious truth. We are uniquely created as a Nazarene family of God the real true n natural comb for our hair is our hands.🤷🏾♀️🙏🏽🤔😩
I had to spend 3-4 taking down the box braids and my hair was so tangled after thought I was the only one. After I had to trim my hair each time. I went back to locs. My hair is happy
I didn’t use brushes or combs for 2 years, took hours of my time, dreaded having to wash it, it contributed to throwing me into a deep depression and making me hate my hair. All the easier to hate it because to reduce tangling, you can only wear it plaited up, corn rowed or twisted and none of those do much for a woman’s femininity or beauty. I was doing all this to retain length dreaming of how long my hair would be. One day I woke up and realized that it would be long down to my knees and still looking shoulder length from the shrinkage; being washed even less and making me even more anxious to detangle. I also had a lot of single strand knots and split ends. 🤷🏽♀️ to each his own, but I’m an embrace the heat and use a tangle teaser natural now. When I finally straightened my hair, I saw it was in poor condition because the split ends are so much harder to see and feel when it’s coily. It scares me to think how many inches of hair I would’ve lost if I had continued instead of straightening my hair when I did. Now, with heat, I know my hair isn’t tangling, and I’m not overlooking split ends that’re traveling up the shaft and I feel more feminine being able to see the length of my hair and it’s finally reflecting the hours I put into it because it’s so shiny, long and thick (even when I’m home alone).
I think femininity is personal just like your personal style and preferences. I think we look feminine in all shapes colors sizes and hair styles we choose. I think your journey needs to be heard and respected but so does everyone’s journey that chooses otherwise. I like how I look with loose hair but it’s not practical for my daily lifestyle currently. This might change but for now I am loving my feminine twists! If someone chooses to grow their hair then wear it out more when it’s at their goal length, so be it. I think a lot of us need to unlearn certain things concerning our hair its look and care especially around detangling. Happy for your new found journey.
I personally stopped combing my hair, because it doesn't stop the tangle, my hair has big curls, it scares me how the strands hold each other to form junk curls , so even to detangle it is a OH GOD COME FOR MY RESCUE. Soooo you are making sense dear. Oh yes I find it difficult to part my hair too , so I don't know how to go about it.
With heat you have to trim more often. I can go 4/5 months without a trim if I don't use heat. When I use I heat, usually within 2 months a trim is needed
it took me years to listen to my 4c low porosity and i'm now not using combs anymore. in others words i accepted the fact that those tools are made for a certain type of hair that but definitely not for afro 4C - the people that introduced it to afro hair community knew that it was only to break our beautiful curly coils. we will never be able to run perfectly combs or brushes through our head and that's okay. I could run a comb through a section of my head, seconds later that section will curl up again. so what's the sense of it except of overmanipulating? finger detangling is one of the main keys to grow healthy long hair and i'm feeling to be more intimate with my crown that has grow like crazy since. ancestors only used time, sun, natural ingredients and their hands while most of us today swear by chemicals brands. last amazing discovery: shea butter straight from an African village in Sierra Leone. my low porosity never liked the shea butter but those in stores (i live in EU). the natural ones are pure heaven and contains a lot of beneficial factors, the difference is huge. imo capitalism makes us think that we need those brands but in reality the best hair&skincare products especially for melanin are found in places we've been taught to be less qualitative. thank you for the amazing tips ❣
Thanks for sharing! The trims after the synthetic hair may be more about the synthetic hair than the brush/comb, but def do what works best for you! I finger detangle first, and only.use a detangling brush once per washday. Cuz "fingers only" never gets out all my shed hairs, which can lead to tangles for me. I'm experimenting to discover if there's a better way for me, buy so far, detangl9ng this way is easy peasy, even if I wait 10 days to 2 weeks between washdays (while keeping it moisturized with my tea spray & oil).
I even notice with curly weaves/wigs that combing/brushing thins and breaks off the hair even increases mating. Ever since I’ve stopped using detangling tools my hair loss every wash day is basically negligible, I’m retaining 90% of my length. I am technically a stretched natural but I do not use comb attachments and cool/low heat settings only.
Hi Beautiful 😊 I seem to remember someone saying that synthetic hair will not cause an itching scalp if you first treat (either wash or condition - I don't recall exactly which, maybe both) the synthetic hair before adding it to your natural hair❤ Thanks so much for caring and sharing! I'm praying God's blessings on you and your family!!!
Went natural in 1996 and got locked-for-life in 1999 so no combs for me - no regrets. I totally agree that we need to embrace our hair AS IS and stop trying to make it emulate other hair textures. We wouldn’t think of making a poodle look like an afghan hound so why should we constantly alter our hair texture? Our hair is beautiful AS IS. Keep up the good work.
Say less girl! My goal is to comb detangle 4 times this year. And Hair acceptance is huge. No matter how much we want to keep a thorough, detangle head or fight shrinkage, it becomes a battle we lose every time…especially if length retention is our goal. Thanks for this! 🌺
PLEASE YESSS! Can u do a video on how to TRAIN your hair to be moisturized! I’m not gonna lie though, ive been getting into a moisturize/hydrating routine lately because I’ve not been so well at keeping up with that. And my hair seem like it’s still dry/breakage but slowly my hair getting the hint that I’m gonna be doing this on a daily basis 😂😂 so it’s trying to catch up with my daily routine 🤷🏽♀️ if that makes sense? lol
So that didn’t work for me for some reason. 😂 I didn’t get my shed hair out properly. So I have single strand knots. I am still recovering. What worked for me is finger detangling and then a comb. But yes, use combs less. More finger detangling. Tip: use your fingers to first removes shed hair and matting, the finish with a comb. That way you don’t have to comb so much.
I agree combing the hair is not good for type 4 hair. I remember when I did the no comb challenge. My hair seems more longer and thicker. My sis used to wear locs in her hair she did the big chop and grew her natural hair within 2 years her hair was almost waist length. She don't comb her hair. I only comb my hair when I wash it or if I feel lazy to finger detangle. That is one of the secrets to hair length. 😊
Hair sheds no matter the type, and hair tangles no matter the type, un- combed or un-brushed hair will mat up no matter the type . The Hair care products is created to make it less trauma when caring for the hair that's a 10:57 naturally growth process, now the choice is yours to do what you wish with your hair, but no matter the texture of your hair water and conditioner is your hair's best best friend 😊
I love your channel because you are so informative. I finger detangle and have for quite some time. It's has done much for my hair. Thank you for what you do! 🙏🏽💛🤗
Thanks for sharing, I struggle with SSK and split ends and still havent figured out how to avoid this, I following some of your strategies to see if it will help for example using glycerin. I try not to use combs but my roots gets so webby, my hair is fine strands and high porosity. I just don’t know how and haven’t figured out how to get rid of the webbing at the roots after no using combs for a while. I try but I had t resort to heat and combing and loosin a bit more hair than I’d like, can’t wait to see how to mitigate this by watching.
Braid your roots. Never allow the hair to dry. Combing does promotes SSK & splits. Heat also brings on splits. I have done a few videos on SSK. They might help you ❤
@@CoilyDiaries I don`t know what its called but to make these curls you use bendy hair rollers, instead of gel use curly mousse, and before you make these curls you wash your hair and moisturize.
I personally enjoy combing my hair. I found a comb I like (the wright comb from revair) and I use it once a week. I changed my mindset from "detangling" to "deshedding." I'll never remove all the tangles (for the reasons you mentioned), but I CAN get rid of the shed hair, which I like doing because 1. It makes my hair feel so light afterward & 2. Because it'll lock up on me if I don't, whether I wear it loose or in a "protective style".😅 Finger detangling for me is frustrating and timeconsuming, whereas, if I keep my hair stretched, it's 10ish mins or so to get through my hair in the shower once a week. Me being low density probably plays a large factor, and I totally get where higher density girlies would benefit way more from the practices you mention! What if you were to save your shed hairs and create twist extensions from them? 🤔 I love your style for this vid, so pretty and elegant!
Girl you said it, I don’t comb or brush my hair either. But my daughter combs my hair every other week after my big wash I can’t roll twist. Though I do recycle my twist to keep the comb out of my hair. So want to eliminate daughter from using comb on my hair, she feels she can’t twist on uncombed hair. Let mama show her something new😂
Combs and brushes are definitely not for me atall, I've tried using the tangle teasers but it didn't work at all. So it's yes to finger detangling for me😊
Thanks for sharing this wonderful info with us. Is there an updated way to test for porosity? I know I am 4c and I tested one strand of my hair at least 3X and each time the strands remained floating on the surface of the cup of water. Does this mean my hair is low porosity? Or should I test a different way?
please see the play list 4c hair is not low porosity OR the video “ everyone is high porosity” it will teach you how to identify your porosity better 🩷
Hi sis, beautiful video with so many to learn. Kudos 🎉. I personally need a lot of training regarding finger detangling. I find it challenging, and when I tried, I ended up with tangled hair after putting water in my hair. Can you please offer any extra support for me?
@CoilyDiaries Thank you for your response. Please, I have not seen it yet. I will take time to check it out from your playlist. Thank you. I really appreciate.
Are you using heat along with glycerin? Also, Green Beauty used very light heat on her hair, according to her. So that could be why she doesn’t need to use a comb…
Hello, I have wanted to go comb free for a couple of years, but I am afraid my hair will lock. I purchased two wooden combs and noticed less hair when combing. I still would like to try not combing for about six months. I was told I am 4b. 💥How do you stop your hair from locking?
Keep it braided and never letting it dry. Finger Detangling to seperate the hairs before they show signs of locking. Avoid keeping hair in a shrunken state❤
I don't mind using a comb to detangle my hair once a month and leave my hair in 4 platts tucked away during that time. My hope is that in Jehovah God's power to restore what is imperfect to perfection in paradise on earth under heavenly kingdom rule coming at any time now (and that includes my hair and loss of any of it during hair maintenance 😊🙏🏽🙌🏾☝🏾👑💜💐) Psalm 83:18; Matt 24:3,14,42,44; Rom 12:12;1 Peter 3:3; 1 Tim 2:9; Rev 21:3-6. Thanks for sharing 😀 Btw: If you research people in other areas such as Asia, Oceania and European countries there were people with kinky curly coily hair in those areas before the pale persuasion of the human family became more predominantly well known.
Anyone got any recommendations for very dry scalp. Its not dandruff, anti dandruff shampoo made it way worse. Also, not all caucasians have straight hair. I know a ginger girl with as tighter curl as a Jamaican girl I know.
glycerin and essential oils. see my month long scalp routine. with regards to hair types, am sure there are exceptions to every rule. we are mainly talking about the 99%
@@CoilyDiaries I'll check it out! My college is supposed to be giving training to work on Afro Caribbean hair in its own section at the end of the course. It's the first college I've seen in the North east of the UK to teach it and it's about time. When I did level 2 (over a decade ago) wavey hair didn't even get covered, only straight hair.
We live in an increasingly forbidding world. My dear, if you prefer to use your fingers to untangle your hair, that's up to you, but let others decide what they want, what they like, what suits them, and so on. I don't like detangling my hair with my fingers, but I'll never go around telling people that combing is better and praising it. You're not a rocket scientist, and your personal choices are your own, so don't impose them on others !

Your no comb challenge taught me a lot, and ever since that challenge I noticed a huge difference. Thanks for always teaching us how to retain length
You are so welcome!
Thanks for sharing!! I think mindset is a huge thing around detangling. Hope you are seeing progress in your hair journey 🌺
One year later, my hair is between my waist and tailbone, mid way there again.
love the evidence!

I use my fingers when Im further in my stretch. 10 weeks and up.
By this time, my hair is up. I wash every two weeks. Your hair looks really soft and hydrated. Yes, do a video on how to hydrated. Have a great weekend. God bless you 🙏🏽 ❤
video already up” moisture vs hydration “
Uuuuh let me go and check your combs out!
@@CoilyDiaries Hopefully they still make them.
My hair started growing after I stopped combs and washing less. I generally wash once every six weeks. I alternate between twists and natural braids.Yes I do my own hair. It's hard to find a hair dresser who specialises in natural hair and if you do they are super expensive
Great tip! keep going🩷
You not lying about the price. I'm gonna wait until I need a trim to go back usually 3-4 months
I hun i wash my hair every 4 weeks and i finger comb my hair
Hey girl please do video on moisture training your hair. Listen, I have learnt so much since finding your channel. I'm more committed now than ever to this natural hair journey.

I agree that type 4c hair in general is different from other types of hair. It needs a different kind of care due to it's tight curls uniqueness. I believe that type 4b does not need to use combs either. My curls are more define when I don't use combs whereas when I use my fingers.
True…
I totally agree about the combing . I also think our hair just likes to tangle . I literally have to detangle 3 times during the course of my wash day .I used to use a wide tooth comb to detangle because it was much easier to clean afterward . But I notice I would still have a lot of shed hair . So I’ve gone back to my brush for detangling and it works so much easier . I use less product to because the brush helps coat my strands more.
Thanks for sharing!! Love this for you 🌺
Since I started following your steps,I have never regretted and my hair is growing, looking good .thanks for sharing
Very welcome 🙏🏽
Hi hun iv started to NOT USE A COMB ON MY HAIR AND OMG MY HAIR IS GROWING I HAVE 4C TIGHT CIRLS X everything youv said its so true my hair breaks and sometimes snaps my hair drys out so i moisterize my haiir everyday its in cainrow im wearing wigs becouse its winter in the uk x
love to hear this 🙏🏽
Combing 😊, only on wash day (monthly) after detangling with fingers, to remove any shed hair. For rehydration, fingers only. I'm rebuilding her hair after a set-back doing the tension method for drying / stretching (with a heat protectant). Her hair does not like heat, nor being dried out, within 6-8 months, I noticed the negative effect and was modified 😢
All the best on your new found progress
Something we need to remember is that within the 4C hair type there are different *textures and densities* . Finger detangling may not work for all textures - fine, coarse etc- . Tried it for months last year and ended up with horrible knots despite a good hair care routine. I’ve done back to wide tooth comb detangling every 3-5 weeks. Less hair loss and stress on the hair.
Buttt….im gonna give finger detangling another try and see what happens.
Please 🙏🏽 use your own discretion when watching. Never do what doesn’t work or suit your hair needs and lifestyle. These are just my thoughts
Question: how do you keep/ style your hair. This could reduce or increase the tangles you experience ❤
😂😂😂 lard me tired - are you Jamaican?😂
A comb or person has not touched my hair since.
such horrific experiences I keep hearing. am so glad we know better now. smart move to eliminate what caused so much damage!
Amazing ❤️❤️❤️❤️🌺
Type 4 hair is the best. You can rock every style you want. So let’s embrace it ❤
love it 🥰
Thank you for this video i have realised on my natural hair journey that i will never be detangle free, so i detangle as much as it's necessary using my fingers, only.I rarely use a comb and would love to stop using it loving your content and your hair ❤❤❤
exactly. I feel the same way .
Well said. My disastrous attempts at wash n go have proved this

Yes, some of those long term protective styles do so much damage to my hair, no matter how much I prep 😢
🌺🌺🌺
Because you don't take care of your hair while in those protective styles.

Key is to keep your hair stretched moisturised and in small parts (twists braids etc) and only detangle one small section at a time
That’s exactly what I’ve been doing. Thank you such.!! 🌸💕
4c here, as well as 1 of my daughters, over the laat 12yrs, ive seemed to have fought one way or another with my hair washing, combing ect.... this video helps me thank you kindly.
So welcome 🙏🏽
It depends on what type of comb you’re using, I use an Afro comb and my hair loves it. Haven’t had tangles or knots in my hair since 2022
Yeah am in no comb zone here 😅
Yesss for the training of the hair video

Yes our hair is high porosity but for some reason many african American feel its low porosity some are but most aren’t
it was that damn water test
I have kept my hair for 5 years and never used a comb. When i want to stretch it i thread plait myself or i twist it.I have never blow dried my hair.Im loving my natural journey
Wow impressive 🌺🌺
Hi Coily D.,
I am sort of in a catch 22 about the same thing.
Hi there,
Thank you so much for reaching out and am sorry you are dealing with stiffness in your fingers.
@@CoilyDiaries HI, thank you for taking the time to listen, care and for the helpful advice and support.
Thank you for being bold enough to teach/tell us the obvious truth. We are uniquely created as a Nazarene family of God the real true n natural comb for our hair is our hands.🤷🏾♀️🙏🏽🤔😩
It’s the hands ✋🏾 sis 🌺🌺🌺
I had to spend 3-4 taking down the box braids and my hair was so tangled after thought I was the only one. After I had to trim my hair each time. I went back to locs. My hair is happy
🌺🌺🌺
I like recycling my parts…
Yeah I need to learn how to do more of that
With heat you have to trim more often. I can go 4/5 months without a trim if I don't use heat. When I use I heat, usually within 2 months a trim is needed
truth sis !!!🙏🏽🌺
it took me years to listen to my 4c low porosity and i'm now not using combs anymore. in others words i accepted the fact that those tools are made for a certain type of hair that but definitely not for afro 4C - the people that introduced it to afro hair community knew that it was only to break our beautiful curly coils.
we will never be able to run perfectly combs or brushes through our head and that's okay. I could run a comb through a section of my head, seconds later that section will curl up again. so what's the sense of it except of overmanipulating?
finger detangling is one of the main keys to grow healthy long hair and i'm feeling to be more intimate with my crown that has grow like crazy since.
ancestors only used time, sun, natural ingredients and their hands while most of us today swear by chemicals brands.
last amazing discovery: shea butter straight from an African village in Sierra Leone. my low porosity never liked the shea butter but those in stores (i live in EU). the natural ones are pure heaven and contains a lot of beneficial factors, the difference is huge. imo capitalism makes us think that we need those brands but in reality the best hair&skincare products especially for melanin are found in places we've been taught to be less qualitative.
thank you for the amazing tips ❣
thanks for sharing this! truly makes you think about how we approach our hair care
My hair is armpit length and it takes me half an hour each week to detangle with aloe vera juice and oils. I am comb free.
love it 🥰
Thanks for sharing!
How you keep or style your hair plays a role in how much tangles you end up getting ❤
Thanks for sharing!!it’s a game changer
Making valid points…thank you!! ❤❤
You are so welcome!
You give the hair a vinegar soak or rinse to get rid of the chemicals it's treated with.
yes vinegar helps with the itch. thanks a lot sis 🩷
Keep up the good work.
well said sis 🩷
Say less girl! My goal is to comb detangle 4 times this year. And Hair acceptance is huge. No matter how much we want to keep a thorough, detangle head or fight shrinkage, it becomes a battle we lose every time…especially if length retention is our goal. Thanks for this! 🌺
well said. vicious cycle 😞
Vicious!
PLEASE YESSS! Can u do a video on how to TRAIN your hair to be moisturized! I’m not gonna lie though, ive been getting into a moisturize/hydrating routine lately because I’ve not been so well at keeping up with that. And my hair seem like it’s still dry/breakage but slowly my hair getting the hint that I’m gonna be doing this on a daily basis 😂😂 so it’s trying to catch up with my daily routine 🤷🏽♀️ if that makes sense? lol
Coming soon! Yeah what you are saying makes total sense…
That way you don’t have to comb so much.
love that you have found an effective process for your hair care
I agree combing the hair is not good for type 4 hair. I remember when I did the no comb challenge. My hair seems more longer and thicker.
My sis used to wear locs in her hair she did the big chop and grew her natural hair within 2 years her hair was almost waist length. She don't comb her hair. I only comb my hair when I wash it or if I feel lazy to finger detangle. That is one of the secrets to hair length. 😊
Wow! That’s alot of length for two years 😮
@@CoilyDiaries because she dont comb her hair and also have a tender scalp. I have pictures that she posted.
Hair sheds no matter the type, and hair tangles no matter the type, un- combed or un-brushed hair will mat up no matter the type . The Hair care products is created to make it less trauma when caring for the hair that's a 10:57 naturally growth process, now the choice is yours to do what you wish with your hair, but no matter the texture of your hair water and conditioner is your hair's best best friend 😊
please see my video on dry detangling vs wet detangling and why wet detangling is not actually the best for length retention

They might help you ❤
The best way I have found is to do curls. I think you should also try it.
do curls? do you mean defining the curl with gel?
@@CoilyDiaries I don`t know what its called but to make these curls you use bendy hair rollers, instead of gel use curly mousse, and before you make these curls you wash your hair and moisturize.
I know it’s bouta be a favorite from the into alone.
❤️❤️❤️
I personally enjoy combing my hair. I found a comb I like (the wright comb from revair) and I use it once a week.
I changed my mindset from "detangling" to "deshedding." I'll never remove all the tangles (for the reasons you mentioned), but I CAN get rid of the shed hair, which I like doing because 1. It makes my hair feel so light afterward & 2. Because it'll lock up on me if I don't, whether I wear it loose or in a "protective style".😅
Finger detangling for me is frustrating and timeconsuming, whereas, if I keep my hair stretched, it's 10ish mins or so to get through my hair in the shower once a week. Me being low density probably plays a large factor, and I totally get where higher density girlies would benefit way more from the practices you mention!
What if you were to save your shed hairs and create twist extensions from them? 🤔
I love your style for this vid, so pretty and elegant!
love this for you. interesting thought about shed hairs …
Let mama show her something new😂
come, let’s transition out together 🌺🥳🥳🥳

Have you tried marley hair? It doesn't dry my hair
Also, yes to the moisture training video😌
yes sis Marly hair was shocking😫
Combs and brushes are definitely not for me atall, I've tried using the tangle teasers but it didn't work at all. So it's yes to finger detangling for me😊
I totally agree! many RUclipsrs with thick long hair that maintains fullness to the ends actually don’t use combs
I see your point. How would you remove shed hair on wash days please?
finger detangling and pulling them out with your fingers. I dry detangle. I’ll do a video on this

indirect heat yes

When I didn't comb my hair it grew faster than when I comb it.
This method is great for length retention 🌺
Hello, I have wanted to go comb free for a couple of years, but I am afraid my hair will lock. I purchased two wooden combs and noticed less hair when combing. I still would like to try not combing for about six months. I was told I am 4b.
💥How do you stop your hair from locking?
Keep it braided and never letting it dry. Finger Detangling to seperate the hairs before they show signs of locking. Avoid keeping hair in a shrunken state❤

My college is supposed to be giving training to work on Afro Caribbean hair in its own section at the end of the course. It's the first college I've seen in the North east of the UK to teach it and it's about time. When I did level 2 (over a decade ago) wavey hair didn't even get covered, only straight hair.
You can finger comb your hair
For sure!!
