its funny how you take your time to give us great information and yet so many people are talking about how you say water instead of saying thank you. well, thanks chris, your videos are awesome
Chris, I hope by some random chance u see 👀 this comment and come back to this video. The reason why i want u to see it is because this is the FIRST car repair/modification video that u called urself CHRISFIX!!! 9 years aho was the beginning of an era that is STILL going strong as hell right now because of YOU. Thank u sir!!!
When it was time for a whole new exhaust system on my car, I painted all the new parts before putting them on and it is amazing how well the paint holds up after several years. I live in the salt belt and I definitely recommend doing this to any exhaust component installed in a car.
Ahmed how did it hold up and did you use the rust-oleum high heat primer as well? Since those parts were new, did you sand first? I ask because I'm not seeing sanding or blasting as a requirement in the high heat rust-oleum primer/paint instructions. Thanks!
A quick question Chris. One day i was driving and suddenly when i shift into 5 gear, it gave a cranking noise and the shifted pulled right back to N. it was night time so i took the risk and continued on as i was driving in the middle of journey of about 200 KMs. It was nighttime and no shops were open. Then after some time the 3rd and 1st started acting same. I reached my destination and next day I woke up i rushed to a mechanic. He said that the gearbox's gear have worn out, or broken. Offered me to change the gear 1,3,5 and Hub Sleeve. And the parts and labour is coming around 15k (INR which is not a huge amount but not less too) So i am asking you. Is the mechanic telling me the truth or not. Mech said that setting up those gears from the gbox is a huge pain and time consuming and the entire repair will take 2 days. My ride is a (India) Tata Indigo CS, 2008 model, done 104000 KMs, Diesel TDI, 5 Speed Manual. Thanks.
Where it all started This must be one of his first videos It's awesome to see how far this man has came Thanks for sharing brother You are always my go to
I used this method just as Chris describes in this vid. It works great! I used the exact same brand of high temp paint. I bought a few cans and sprayed all of my wheel wells and a lot of the underside of my truck. I am sure the final color will vary depending on the amount of rust, etc., etc. My final color turned out to be a "dark" gun metal gray...which I like. Bottom line....follow the instructions from Chris (keeping in mind results may vary) and you won't be disappointed! Thanks AGAIN Chris!!!
Wow, going from modern ChrisFix videos to this is brilliant. Dude, you've come a LONG way. Not that there is anything at all wrong with this. This is a great DIY video. But now you're a proper, fully fledged RUclips star
Replacing a rusty exhaust pipe with a new one on my corolla. Thought about painting it to make it last longer and boom, Chris Fix was there to help me. Thank you !
OK, I had to pause the video and take a deep breath. No blue gloves? No "Chris Fix here!" intro? I didn't know such videos existed! _Edit: not "soapy wooder"? Man, I feel...I don't know._
I love all your videos! I'm not a car owner yet, but you give so much great information, that I feel confident that I'll be able to take care of and buy a great car, thanks to you, Chris! So, once again, I say thank you!
I wanna say thank you very much for this I didn’t really know the best way to get the crap that rubs off it after sanding off but you made it look easy thank you
You have thee best video explanations. You go into everything on what to do and what not to. And you show everything's step by step on cam if possible. Thank you so much Chris
Yo, for fun I watch his old videos......you have come a far way Mr. Fix ( and these videos saved me thousands, and given me many rewarding smiles of accomplishment) - thanks a million!!
So Im still watching all your videos Chris for the past 3 weeks now! Ive done many of your repairs on one of my cars and they are working just great! I find it funny how you dont sound very enthusiastic on older videos compared to your newer videos :) Cheers!
Your old videos compared to your new ones are awesome! You have grown and improved the quality and your level of excitement is way better in the new ones!! Keep up the awesome work brother! Gotta get me some soapy wooder stickers!
A suggestion; for painting pipes located after the catylitic converter, then paint rated at 500f is quite suitable. Exhaust pipe temperatures reach between 300f and 500f. Therefore Bigger is not always better! I use KBS rust seal for my exhaust pipes - excellent result. Use for pipes after the catylitic converter.
Thanks for the reply, I did mine exactly like your vid, it's been about a month and looks great, worst case scenario it's easy enough to do a second coat if it starts to fade or chip. Keep up the vids, well done man.
Hey Chris, love your channel, great videos! My one comment about your process in this video is that sanding off the rust will also remove any factory applied galvanized coating. I have found great results with using phosphoric acid to remove the rust, gets into all the rust pits but won't strip paint or other coatings or eat the good steel.
This is a great video. one thing to note. Exhaust generally rust from the inside out. due to condensation build up everytime you shut the car off. make sure when you are spray painting the outside that you don't clog up the weep holes that allow your muffler and resonator to drain.
Honestly I have no need to paint my exhaust as I have a full stainless system but I'm running out of ChrisFix videos to watch.. I can't get enough! Have learnt so many tips and tricks along the way.. Thanks Chris!
Thank you Chris for the tip why one has to choose the High heat paint. But it would be nice if metallic aluminum or metallic silver is available for high heat applications like this.
Chris: rubbing alcohol is only 65% isopropyl alcohol. The rest is plain old water and sometimes added glycerol for skin lubrication. Best to buy the 99% isopropyl bottle. That's what I use.
Hello guys, this is ChrisFix here The first of everything. Love you Chris and thank you for all your videos ! Regard from a very big fan in Malaysia ✌✌
Not sure why this old video was recommended to me.... nor why I watched it twice in a row. Hahaha. =D. Now I feel the need to paint my exhaust. Hahahh. Great video =)
i dont think he is sick. that strange voiice is just because Chris truly hates rust and dirt and so he feels uncomfortable among rusty automobile parts. :( anyway,Chris if you re reading this, thanks for all the cool videos!! Greatings from Hungary
long, long ago an old man (I'm 67 yrs old) told me to drill a 1/8th inch hole in the lowest part of your exhaust system...he said condensation is why most exhausts rot and that little hole will make it really last
I use a wire wheel on a grinder to get all the rust off my roters and calipers haha and cleaned them with petrol then painted them black, they look really good!
Good tip/great ideas w/ the water rinse & alcohol prep, I'll probably use that in the future. I'm assuming hand sanitizer would work about the same as the thin alcohol, what do you think? Take care from Tn.
nice video Chris. Just wanted to let people know, if you buy a car from new, then you dont need to sand.... you may need to clean still, incase of grease
I use Heater Paint , there are some special colors like silver metalic and so on. That looks really nice. Or stuff called "Hammerschlag Lack" produced by Hammerite. I dont know if its available in the USA aswell, but you can use it basically without prework on the exhaust pipe and it also prevents rust and is temperature resistent.
Chris, I know this video is pretty old, I'm just wondering if you still have the vehicle and how to paint held up and preventing rust. I recently bought a vehicle from the north and live in the south and I'm doing this same technique. I'm also wondering if primer is necessary or if just the straight paint works as a preventative measure for rust. Love your videos thank you man!
Hello! I was inspired by your video and was interested in doing this to my Toyota Tacoma 1999. I am sanding the pipes starting from my exhaust, past my muffler, all the way to my intermediate pipe. Doing this process while watching your video made it really easy! Ohh and I also had a question. I’m doing this also because It is specially formulated to prevent rust so I was wondering, how is the exhaust holding up in your Mazda? Is there any rust spots at all since you’ve done this project ??
Factory stainless steel exhausts should last the life of the car. We just recently had the muffler replaced on a 1986 truck that doesn't get driven much. Went with an aftermarket that was only around $100, but read lots of reviews saying aftermarket can fail as quickly as 2 years due to rusting because they're not the same quality as the original. I waited about a week and figured I should do it soon before any wear shows up. So I just used some engine degreaser and cleaned it with a t-shirt. Came out pretty well. I also read that dark colors dissipate heat more quickly than light colors? Not sure how that works, but I used flat black. You don't want to use gloss black on anything outside the car. Looks kinda tacky if you do. Can't stress enough that you need to spend the extra few dollars to get the high temperature paint. Otherwise it's gonna chip off and look like crap quickly, and double the work sanding it off and repainting.
You can tell he's cot so much more confident in what he sayed in these old videos he's really thinking about what he's saying now he's fluent and enthusiastic lol
tip drop the spare tire to get the back side of the exhaust. my work was easy only to just having muffler, catalytic converter, and the pipes were just replace do to rusted out. 2 Bad winters did a toll on my truck exhaust system. I had a shop put on the exhaust system, sometimes I don't have the time. only had 4hrs to get painted before the weather dropped to below 50 degrees I used a dremel to sand my trailer hitch and bumper mount. and sand paper in places the bit couldn't get to. next day off I am going to remove my tow hooks and sand them repaint them.
not sure if someone has told you this already, but using alcohol to clean in place of water is better. it's not that alcohol dissolves water, it's that alcohol has the same wet towel effect, but the alcohol doesn't leave behind the same residues or deposits that water would.
its funny how you take your time to give us great information and yet so many people are talking about how you say water instead of saying thank you. well, thanks chris, your videos are awesome

That looks really nice.

I dont know if its available in the USA aswell, but you can use it basically without prework on the exhaust pipe and it also prevents rust and is temperature resistent.
Question: does the high temp spray paint insulate heat creating more heat?
A layer of paint is not going to insulate much heat at all. That’s like painting a shed and saying it would insulate it. Paints thins
