I'm thinking I could make a bunch of even smaller ones for gifts (to sit on a North facing window sill). Great information. I once had a giant one (back in the sixties) that was almost 3 feet in diameter and sitting on a solid white plastic base - James Bond era. I filled it with African Violets and they LOVED it. I think they like to be in groups. Anyway, It had a small opening at the top and after the first time I planted them, I ignored it for over a year. They were totaling happy and gorgeous. I put it outside on the porch in the summer (Florida) and everyone was amazed at how beautiful it was - completely loaded down with plants, all colors and shades. I had so many babies I was running out of friends to give them to. Then when we moved, I set them in the garage waiting for their turn for the ride to the new house and I forgot them. They froze. I've been sorry, since. The plastic was so out of style that I trashed it - what a moron. I wish I had it now but have never seen anything like it since. Thanks for this great video.

Love it! I feel your pain, you need some salad/kitchen tongs for this project. A straw works great for removing dirt as well. I just finished a 12 inch shallow pot of succulents for a gift, as well as a table top fountain planter combo with a tiny waterfall (kinda want to keep them for myself). lol I have a vintage clear tea/coffee pot in my kitchen planted with just moss with a trio of miniature toad stools. I love terrariums and have several, and I'm always on the lookout for unusual containers for the next one.

Try using metal tongs to hold cactus' with thorns. Or use newspaper to hold the cactus either way you won't get those fine needles in your fingers to pick out for months. Living in the desert has taught me respect for cactus. Beautiful but dangerous. I had a cactus garden in my backyard in Vegas, it was nice.

Instead of tongs you could use a band of newspaper. Just fold a strip about an inch wide around the spines and hold the open end closed so the cactus is pinched between the newspaper. This way keeps your fingers close to allow for maneuverability and keeps your fingers safe!
