Looks like a great game, I can't wait to play this on a dark stormy night on a rug in front of a big fire. By the way, for those that don't know, the box artwork was painted by my buddy historical Devon artist Chris Collingwood... Nobody paints a better pirate!
I have owned Blackbeard for many many years but it's gets boring nowadays. We are in a Golden Age of Board Games and we STILL have not found the perfect pirate game (not to my knowledge). I wish somebody could distil Sid Meier's Pirates into a game. It's a great game. For my pirate game I use the ships from Pirates of The Spanish Main (the little mini ships) and the rules from Wooden Ships & Iron Men for ship combat. For ground combat I use the rules from Sid Meier's Pirates. And I use roleplaying rules for personal combat and interaction. It's not hard but kind of complex if you don't have the rules and minis. :) You can say my group and me have our own pirate game. ^^
It does look like a great game, kind of what I was hoping Merchants & Marauders to be. Sadly, I think the kickstarter is a bit ambitious with the values it's trying to reach considering the game has near-zero buzz. The whole campaign seems a bit rushed, I honestly think they should cancel the Kickstarter, generate some buzz on the Geek and at conventions, and then come back to Kickstarter with revised values.
Agreed...I think it's unfortunately a case of someone who didn't do their due diligence on running a KS board game campaign (didn't see him asking for advice in any of the usual channels), and is determined at this point to keep trying despite the current funding level. Really hope he cancels sooner rather than later and comes back in a month or two having reworked things a bit, sought advice regarding stretch goals and overall campaign page design, and done better pre-campaign marketing, because I think the game itself looks great and has huge potential.
Can you play this as a 2-Player game? Merchants and Marauders isn't that good with two people, but I am still hoping for the full pirate experience with my girlfriend :D
How was the rules? I read them at least 3 times and I still have trouble understanding the games. The game lacks some clarification. I believe they need to be more explicit in everything. What does generating means? Etc. One of the thing holding me is the rules. By the way, I prefer tokens to ships(except the players). Why does every one want these ships instead of tokens? :P It would just be harder to play aroung the map.
As every games. But still, the word generating confused me a lot. I searched for it meaning and I didn't find what to do... I think the rules could have some improvement in wording or clarifications. Like okay there is the word generating. What do I do exactly? I'm not sure I've read that somewhere. Is the weight of the rules a lot or it comes naturally once learned?
I'm with you!!! In a game like this... it probably IS more fun to be the anarchist ! Sail around and sink ships!!!! This is one of those games where it would be great to do this... good point!!!!! The game DOES have a steep learning curve but it looks great... did it fund? Is the game out there for sale?

We actually advised him the same, but Tom is an ambitious guy! We're wishing him the best of luck because his game has got a ton of potential.

Did they mention to you how they were going to distinguish ownership of the metal ships? They didn't appear to be painted in the KS.
Didn't Anny Bonney sail with Calico Jack? If so she didn't have her own flag.
Great walkthrough!

I own AH's "Blackbeard" but haven't played it in years... have to dig it up. Thanks for reminding me of it.
so this is sid meiers pirates as a board game :-)
Not really, Merchant and Marauders is a bit closer to Sid Meiers Pirates!!

The rules did take a moment or two to grok but it worked a lot better when you have the board in front of you.

How long does the game take normally?
With more plays, rather quickly. For three players, it took us around an hour the last time we played.
