Assuming he made the cut in each tournament. That would be roughly 100 rounds, which would equal roughly 400 attempts at making an eagle on par 5. Would you rather 12 eagles out of 400? Or 80+ Birdies?
@@juwanleejones5549 yes but most birdies on a par 5 are achieved by trying to hit the green(get close) in two anyway. E.g out of those theoretical "80+ birdies" around 65 would be made from a two putt on the green in two
lol! For the audience of this video, Birdies don’t happen often (forget Eagles)! This crowd isn’t on tour. 99% of us are over the moon with a par on a par 5.
The guy who gave Freddy that advice was Raymond Floyd, I saw Couples state that on some sort of biography show or maybe it was just an interview somewhere. But it was Floyd who asked him how many eagles he made in a particular season, and pointed out that the number was so low, Fred should be trying for birdies and not taking risks that cost him birdies on par 5.
Best advice I ever got was from my dad. He always told me shoot for pars and birdies will happen. Basically on in regulation you will one putt every now and then.
Luv Freddy ❤❤ I luv his swing. His style on the course. Hands in pockets whistling down the fairway 😅 But I'm srry I'm breaking 80 before I turn 40...I'm going for the green EVERYTIME on par 5s..John Daly mentality 😂😂
Been playing golf for 45+ years. I have 4 eagles in my lifetime. 3 on par 5's and one hole out on a par 4. I play for pars and bogeys. At 60 if I can break 90 I'm happy.
Yup I’ve always played them like that mainly because it can’t get there in 2 shots lol hit a good drive, hit a good layup to leave myself a wedge to try knock it within 15 feet and give myself a shot at birdie
If you miss going for eagle by not much, you're more than likely getting par or worse. Play for the birdie on par 5s has been a game changer. It saves 2 strokes on average.
Long par 4 holes are par 5s for almost all amateur players, so play to get on for 3 shots. Holes where score card says a par 5 are par 6 holes so get on for 4.
If you can't hit the par 4s with 2 decent shots, you're probably playing tees that are too long. I was a club pro for several years, and I'd estimate 90% of golfers are playing at least 1 set of tees too difficult for their playing level. It's no wonder they're constantly frustrated. Their ego makes the game almost impossible before they even start.
Yep!!!! I have literally been filming and reviewing my 4-5 rounds per week. I have noticed I am “going for the shot” too much so to say. I have now since started to just go for 4 instead of the seagull!! My overall average score that I always film and play every shot true has dropped!!! Play smart=playing safe=playing consistent =lower scores! Swing on!!
Get on in three is what I try to do. Last round last par 5 had a nice tee shot then topped my 5 wood still went about 50 yards, hit a nice 7 iron onto the green, I did end up three putting but I’m not going for the green in two. Ever. Sometimes my second shot I’ll pull out a three wood if I’m feeling good with my longer clubs so I can wedge on not iron on the green
The par 5’s where I golf are fairly short. They play like a long par 4. It’s kinda easy to get on in two I eagled one of Them today and lipped out an eagle on the other. That does rarely happen though I usually par em. Getting better though.
8 handicap typing…Put it in the fairway or close to it, put it on the green or close to it, be happy to make a par. You might make a putt or two or three per round for birdie. Eagles? They’re so rare I keep a running list describing where they occurred. Many are chip-ins. 😅
This is wisdom because modern golf course design uses postage stamp size greens on the top of a hill to thwart the golfer. Odds of keeping a ball on the green do down with distance of the approach shot so the better overall scoring strategy on many holes is to lay up short of the green then hit a high lofted lob shot close to the pin for a one-put par or birdie if a long hitter off the tee. Before the game changed to Grip It, Rip It then lob out of the rough on par 4s in the late 90s when large volume carbon shaft drivers and lower spin Pro V1 ball increased Driver distances by 50+ yards golf holes were designed with angled greens that rewarded shaped approach shots with mid-irons (back when a 7 iron went 150yards) and penalize the golfer who could only hit straight by always leaving them ‘short sided’ to a green and pin position that angles right to left \ which ‘favors’ a high draw approach ) shot or left to right / which gives a high fade ( a better chance of STAYING ON THE GREEN AFTER LANDING AND ROLLING TOWARDS THE PIN. I learned golf in the 1980s from Nicklaus in “How I Play Golf” and that’s how he explained course management via shaping mid-iron approach shots to control ball direction on the green after landing and how I still try to play in my 70s off the “member’s” tees instead of the ‘senior’ tees. Unless I really nail my Drive with my PING G425 Driver I don’t try for green in regulation I just lay up to the flattest lie in front of the green with the longest straight line distance between edge of green and the pin for that day’s pin placement and the try to land the approach shot close and them one-put for par or if the golf gods are smiling hold the chip/pitch for a Birdie. Few recreational golfers never try to learn to shape shots because it takes a lot of practice on the course with real golf balls not the rocks on the range. I never was able to shape shots consistently until my late 50s when I retired and took a job as a starter which allowed me to practice on the range and play every day for free, mostly solo practice rounds a luxury pros have but amateurs don’t. I played daily, weather permitting, for ten years and could shape shots at will. Now playing weekly, the clubs are no longer like Jedi light sabers but it still fun playing like they are while fighting the ‘Evil Empire’ (Punitive course designs) and being rewarded when a shaped shot visualized beforehand gets executed as planned and rewarded by par or better.
I think it's the opposite. Go for eagles. Because if it is like poker tournaments where aggro play and big stacks lead to more 1st place. Less aggro and less risk leads to more cashes. So if you are playing for first, go for eagles and when you get that lead, can back off the aggressive risk and enjoy the lead. To play for birdies.
Yes but the point is to miss on the correct side so you have an easy birdie. Don't short side yourself chasing an eagle, that's the message of the video.
No different than a tough par 4 or a long par 3, where’s the safe miss so you can get it up and down. On a green with back to front slope and front pin position, I make more pars hitting to the front of the green for an easy up and in.
I don't agree with that at all... not everyone has the talent to make eagles. So, if you do, like Freddie, it should be your goal that stands apart from the rest of us.
Leaving driver is nonsense, missing eagles on par 5s = birdies. Someone at Fred's calibre he can lay up and stiff it to a makeable putt. Us amateurs leave it to a probable 2 or 3 putt. Always go aggressive. I'm only scratch, so I'm better than most, but these guys are 10 shots better than me, their up and down game is a different class
I'm reminded of one of Couples '92 rounds at Augusta hitting driver at 15. Instead of his fade down the hill he left himself behind the trees on the left. No problem, 200 yard 7 iron over the trees to 15 feet from the pin.
Yeah but uou need two birdies to nake an eagle. So that 12 eagles are 24 birdies. That is 12 rounds with birdies on each side. Yhat is what you get for trying to give advice to a PGA superstar.
Right gang. Don’t be a hero. Be safe and hit your 2 iron to 40 feet 👍🏻
Simple eh!
Oh thats what my game is missing- Im sure of it! Im going to go out and buy a 2 iron today. Should solve everything.
From 230.
Bro I’m just trying to make a par
Fr man I shoot around 100-105 rn but I think I can break 100 next time I play
Rory should watch this on repeat
Saw Mr. Couples at the Buick years ago, definitely one of the good guys.
I’ll take this on board to comfort myself as I shoot a 7
12 eagles in 25 tournaments is still hella good

@@juwanleejones5549 senior tour they play 3 rounds per week
That's exactly the problem, did you watch the video?
The whole point was that he's trying for eagles and losing overall score at the cost of a few more eagles, not that he didn't have a lot of eagles
@@juwanleejones5549 yes but most birdies on a par 5 are achieved by trying to hit the green(get close) in two anyway. E.g out of those theoretical "80+ birdies" around 65 would be made from a two putt on the green in two
Best tempo swing of the golf club ever
Possibly so. Sam Snead and Bobby Jones are in the conversation.
hell yeah Couples is tempo town
I was always taught to attack pars par 5 as a scratch marker
You can attack it and still safely birdie it.
lol! For the audience of this video, Birdies don’t happen often (forget Eagles)! This crowd isn’t on tour. 99% of us are over the moon with a par on a par 5.
99%? 😂 don’t think so buddy

My favorite golfer of all time Mr. couples
You'll make better scores by not making mistakes than by making excellent shots.
That’s all good and well for those on tour. But us hackers eagles are what dreams are made of.
Best advice I ever got was from my dad. He always told me shoot for pars and birdies will happen.

ill keep playing for my bogey
Literally hit an eagle today
Not just an old guy Freddy couples is a goat
Gotta be Floyd, he was the one who had his ear
Not sure if it was Greg Norman who told him this but he stated this dawned on him during his career as well that he had to curb his ego on Par 5's
always go for the bird on the par 5
Luv Freddy ❤❤

For weekend golfers the same applies to par 4s a 320 yard par 4 does not need a driver use a higher percentage club to get in the fairway.
This short is next to the phrase “easier said than done” in the dictionary
VJay! He just did this year
😅😅 I’ve never even swung a 2 iron.

You can't be short on 12 at Augusta, but Freddy can.
