  • Here is a very nice little Victor 2 spring motor from about 1913 or so. Still retains the double cut spiral on the spindle. I removed the springs, cleaned and inspected them, reinstalled and greased 'em, cleaned up the governor and other gears, put it all back together and it works great! Cool!

I have this same motor...how do you remove the gears to pull the shaft out of main spring...looks like a pin holds the gears on...please help. Thank you!

Hi there! I'm battling a some governor noise issues.

What kind of motor? Different machines configured their governors differently so a rattle could be caused by lots of things, depending on the type of motor. The most common issues that cause rattling are worn spindle gears that drive the governor, or worn worm gears on the governor itself. Look closely at these gears and see if there is any wear.

Another issue could be the bushings that secures the ends of the governor. There should be just the tiniest bit of slack when you move the governor shaft end to end. If the slack is enough that you can see it, that is probably too much. If you can feel the slack but it is too minute to see, that is just about right. Good luck!

cdbpdx it's on a Victor XI. Very similar to the setup on your machine. the Gears are in great shape and we'll lubricated. I took the governor out to clean it, but when I put it back it became noisier than before (and also too slow) so I adjusted the governor with the bushings at the ends (then I ran into a real problem because the set screw on one end BROKE inside the hole! So now one bushing is stuck in place, and I can only adjust from the other side.

That was going to be my next suggestion, to move the governor shaft to where the spindle gear engages it right in the center of the governor shaft worm gear. If your bushing is stuck in one position, then this can't be adjusted. One thing I've done to remove broken off screws is to grind down the metal around the screw until you have enough room to grab the screw stub, then twist it out. This will only work if the busted part is just about flush with the surrounding metal it is screwed into. You for sure don/t want to grind off so much metal that you can't screw another set screw tight enough to secure the bushing.
