    Thanks for your step by step video. I was able to finish the project in about a hour or so (I nearly 80 years old). I'll make certain that I check the 'tightness' again, after I drive the car in a couple of day.

    This was much more informative than the included printed directions. They actually don't cover attaching the crossbars to the brackets (i.e. they don't say to use the smaller bolts, or lining up the thinner front edge... nothing!). Can I ask, should I also be using included washers when attaching the Brackets to the Cross Bars? I noticed you didn't and wanted to know why you chose that route. Thanks again!

    They are sold on Amazon like you said but the specs don’t fit my Honda CRV 2019 as bars are too short. I tried and tried but could not find this type of crossbars but longer

    Does it matter how the rail is installed whether the slimmer part is pointed towards the rear?

  • @lilliput1orig
    @lilliput1orig 2 года назад

    I found it difficult to remove the caps on the screw holes so instead I sprayed WD40 between the cao bottom and the side rails. Then I used a power screw drive pressing the tip hard at the center hole of the cap and set the drive to turn counterclockwize and the cap came off easily. The crossbars I got did not have slots on the brackets to screw the brackets to the cross bar. Instead it sits between the bars loosely and it could move sideways between the brackets. To prevent this I inserted the tip of rubber or flexible plastic shim securely in the space between the top of the bar and the top of the bracket, I trimmed off the shim afterwards so it is not seen.

    It looks like it's not a water tight connection where the part connects to the metal cross bar. How does the water drain out that gets inside the rails during rain or washing? Have you noticed any rusting?

  • @joyatidebnath5086
    @joyatidebnath5086 3 года назад +1

    Your instructions were perfect. Thank you. I have a question: The inside plastic thingies did not snap on any of the corners well. I know they were just cosmetic, but my question is should I put little vaseline to avoid any rusting?

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  3 года назад

      I don’t think Vaseline will last long, not water resistant and not UV resistant. If you have something like flex seal, or something like it, those are rated for outdoor use.
      Or brush a little, very little so none gets on the paint, of rust preventions liquids the bolt.

    • @joyatidebnath5086
      @joyatidebnath5086 3 года назад

      @@AwkwardHamster I didn't understand. Wouldn't flex seal ruin it? Then I can't take it off in Winter if I wanted to. Aren't those screws made of steel? They shouldn't rust, right?
      Also, I need a video of installing the J mounts.

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  3 года назад

      I should clarify what I was trying to explain. The flex seal was just for any plastic part you want to seal. Flex seal comes off easy.
      For rust prevention on the metal part, if it is something that may concern you in the long run a little wd40 or like substance would help.
      The bolts shouldn’t rust. Mine has been working fine and I haven’t seen any rust stains on the roof of my car after all this time.
      I wished I remembered to apply some oil to the bolts before installation. Not a necessary step but it’s something I do regularly now for other installs for piece of mind. I will likely get rid of the car after 15 years, long before rusting becomes and issue.

    Thanks for the video. I just installed mine The awful instructions say torque the bolts to 10 ft lbs. This is way too much. The bolts are stainless but they will strip very easily. I tightened mine very snugly with a 1/4 ratchet and called it a day. I also used removable lock tite.

    Well done video that was easy to follow. I am probably going to get a 2019 CR-V Touring that comes with the rails. I was thinking that I wouldn't want to have the Crossbars on the vehicle all the time, but does it seem practical to take them on and off? It wouldn't take much time to do it and the more you did it the faster it would go. I just figured I would probably not use them much, but they would be handy when needed. This product seems reasonably priced and more than adequate for the use. Thanks

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  5 лет назад

      I wouldn’t recommend taking them on and off. Even with them on I don’t see them impacting gas mileage. Besides, removing it and reinstalling would take more time that isn’t necessary. I’ve used it to move ladders and mattresses. So much easier have them above the vehicle vs hanging out the back.

    • @lilliput1orig
      @lilliput1orig 2 года назад

      The roof side rails on the CR-V Touring sits flush on the roof so you can not put a cord around it. So you need the cross beams which are elevated above the roof.

      I mentioned in the video I purchases the cheapest one on Amazon. I can't pronounce the name Ruiang VOYAGE. Amazon listing may show a name like Ruiang but that name was not printed on the box. No name was printed on the box. I don't believe there is a difference between cheapest and second cheapest.
      These cheapest ones aren't as popular or as reviewed as the slightly more expensive ones. I wanted to save a few bucks so I bought this and make this video in case there are others out there curious about these basically no-name brand items.
      I still use the roof rack to this day.
