I know how your kids will ❤ kale . I like to steam it in a pot my mom has that you put time in it & steams it for that time then it beeps when done. Once you take it out it should be soft.
Aside grab garlic & up to you how much kale you have put 4-5 heads. More if you love garlic. Mash them in a mortar then put half lemon juice or more if you like it more acidic like me. Leave it in the mortar. Put the kale on a salad plate .
On a saucepan heat 🔥 up oil of choice, I like 🫒 olive oil. Once it starts with bubbles put it inside the mortar with the mashed garlic & squeezed 🍋 lemon.
All these mixed in the mortar will be your dressing for the kale that is nice & soft.
Let me know if they loved it they should; I made it for me & I ❤ love it!!!

The black eyed peas is interesting to me. I'm not Jewish but am from the southeastern US and on New Years Day we eat black eyed peas and greens (your luck and your money for the new year) so I just find it interesting that it has cultural significance elsewhere.

When I was a child, I was told the pomegranate seeds were medicine by some older children who were just teasing, but to this day, I cannot eat the fruit of the pomegranate without it tasting bitter, or thinking it will taste like medicine. Silly, no?

I recently discovered that I'm Jewish through my mother's matrilineal line. Verdict is still out on my father's paternal line.
Turns out we're Ashkenazi. What's more is I am positive my mother knew this and hid it from us. No deathbed confession for us (adult) kids.
I'm on the path of trying to rediscover my roots. It's hard because she covered all traces to the best of her ability and kept us from extended family.
Talk about a shock going from "mmm bacon" to going "is this something my ancestors would really approve of?" XD
This late in my life and the life I'm living I can't undo some things (primarily my marriage), but there are other places I can absolutely change. Thank you for making Jewish life and traditions accessible to those of us who weren't raised in it.

I hope you will receive this as the blessing it is meant to be, despite the story that comes before.
I grew up in a very abusive home, and I was convinced that my worth was directly tied to what I did for others. I knew that I didn't love others that way, but I was also convinced that I was inherently unlovable. I was married before I understood how wrong that was. G.od was good to me and provided people in my life to love me and show me, with their love, that love is always unearned - given freely, without condition. This spring marked 24 years with my husband, and I couldn't have hoped for a better partner for my life.
All of the sob story aside, here is the blessing:
At the end of the video, when you speak life to us, when you tell us we are loved just as we are, I cry nearly every time. It is such a blessing to me to hear this with every video. It is such a beautiful truth, and hearing it brings life.
I pray that G.od blesses you with the sort of unconditional love you show in your videos and with which you bless me.

thank you so much for this video! My parents did not choose to pass on many Jewish traditions to me, and this helps me so much!
I foster children, and I find that when there is a veggie they have issues eating I make them help me cook it. I would put a little coconut oil in a frying pan with the cleaned kale with some smoked salt, and let them try some spices and experiment with what tastes good to them. It helps teach them to cook on their own, and they're more likel
y to eat it shearly because they made it themselves!

    Beautiful thank you for sharing!
    My daughter loved kale chips
I used only Tuscan kale (lancinato kale) for this as the curly kind holds too much oil
    Very quick and easy
just wash and dry very well the leaves of kale and remove the center stem
then overlap the halves and cut into chip size pieces
This next step is the most important one and often skipped: you need to massage the pieces with your fingertips with extra-virgin olive oil salt and if you want some pepper you just want a thin layer of oil on both sides of the kale leaves a light sheen not a drench!
Finally place each leaf in a single layer on a sheet pan in the center of a pre-heated 400 Fahrenheit oven until crispy 5-10 min

We have a very large vegetable garden, and one of the crops I harvest each year is Tuscan kale. There are plenty of ways we use it, but one of my favorites is to sauté it until it’s tender with olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, and a splash of red or white wine vinegar. Just remember to cut the leaves away from the rib and slice them into thin strips, because otherwise they’ll risk burning in the pan and the bitterness will come out more. Good luck!

The best, sweetest meat in the fish is in the cheeks. If you have a fishmonger near you, they often use large red snapper or grouper fish, and cut steaks or fillets off the large fish. The heads are great to grill or cook on the stove to make a fish based soup. The cheeks are the best meat and very sweet.

I’m South Carolina lowcountry on my mom’s side and we celebrate New Year’s Day with collard greens, cornbread, and Hoppin’ John served over rice for the dinner that night.
For those who don’t know, Hoppin’ John is black-eyed peas cooked with garlic, onions, a splash of hot sauce, and bacon or ham (I know, it’s not kosher-I’m so sorry Sara, I’ll see if I can find a way to adapt it to your needs if you like). It’s a southern tradition for New Year’s Day to eat this dish and ensure good luck for your family. The collards symbolize money, the Hoppin’ John is for good luck, and the cornbread’s gold color speaks for itself!
And being Wiccan, we eat pomegranates as part of our Samhain feast celebrating the final harvest of the season, honoring our ancestors and paying our respects to the spirits of those who have crossed over during the year, and also because of the pomegranate’s connection to the season with the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. They’re delicious, and a wonderful treat we look forward to!

This is a lovely video. Although I am not Jewish- or religious at all, you remind me that no matter our culture we all have so much in common as fellow humans. Like you I too check produce very carefully, I want to choose the freshest for my family. And yes I buy little things for my husband too, just simple things like his favourite olives, he does the same for me, he will buy me my favourite fruit or locally made chilli jam. This way of expressing love goes so mJust to show her love and much deeper than giving " I love you cards" or balloons, and although we speak to each other of our feelings, some acts of service or giving are so special. On a cold frosty morning i often go out to find my husband has scraped the ice from my car windshield before scraping his own, then setting off to work- despite it being 7am, dark and cold. I extend these acts to my ( now adult) children too. My daughter is an ICU nurse, works very long shifts, but visits me regularly. I love to support and nurture her- good food, cuddles, she will sometimes take a nap in her childhood bedroom, and I will nip out to put fuel in her car and check her tyre pressure. Just t lighten her load a little. And I like to think this act of loving service to her will somehow be passed on to the patients she cares for., even if just a little. When we show or give our love to others these ripples spead out and touch many.

I love Rosh Hashanah and really appreciate all the explanations for the different foods and the mentions of where the Ashkenazi tradition varies from the Sephardic. In life in general, I often find the “why” more fascinating than the “what”.
Have you thought about kale chips, turning the tough, bitter vegetable into a fun snack? Cut the tough stems out, tear to desired “chip” size, toss with oil of choice (just 1 tablespoon per head), and bake at 325F for 20-25 minutes on a parchment-lined baking sheet, flipping the kale halfway through, or 325F in an air fryer for 5-7 minutes, tossing halfway through. When crisp, remove from oven and toss with salt and any other desired seasonings. I am not a kale fan but find kale chips delicious, and these are low fat and low calorie.
Or maybe a kale salad with a hummus-based dressing. Massage the dressing into the salad until you feel it submit 🤣 and add apple slices, pomegranate seeds, maybe orange slices. If your kids love the dressing and there is enough fruit, they might like it.

I love Rosh Hashanah! Thank you for teaching me about being intentional in choosing foods. I have incorporated that into my shopping and not only do I feel like I waste less, I also feel better about what we consume. I also purchase items for my husband that he enjoys. I even slip them into his lunchbox. This Roman Catholic girl wishes you l'shanah tovah!

I love Rosh Ha Shana! Hello Sara Malka, thank you again for another inspiring video. Since I found your channel a couple of months ago I am paying much more attention in the produce section of the grocery store to make sure there are no bugs on the produce. Looking forward to your next video as we will be hosting guests on Rosh Ha Shana. ;-) Lots of love and shavua tov, Miriam

I love Rosh Hashana! Hello Miss Sara, I've enjoyed your video once again. Something my fiancé and I do for one another is complete little tasks or bring little favorite things to each other. I know it is a gesture of love and of thinking of each other. I'm glad you've mentioned it here as sometimes I forget to rejoice in those little things and be grateful for all my Michael does for me already. I can't wait to be married to him! Your tips are always so appreciated. You think of things that are interesting and helpful. Peace and blessings to you and your family.
