    It seems like your understanding of the dot product is a little off. Assuming that the 2 vectors used in the dot product have a unit length of 1 then the dot product will return 0 if the 2 vectors are perpendicular to each other (90 degree difference in their heading angles). If they are perfectly opposing each other, then it will return -1.

      Oh, you are completely right. Dot products go from -1 to 1, not 0 to 1. I don't know how I missed that when writing the script. I'm pretty sure I even have footage with debug prints that show that too. The principle of how I'm specifically using it still works, but it is really unfortunate to have that incorrect, as it could cause issues for someone trying to find who is directly behind them.

      ​@ric3poversace477 nah mate, I assume they did get close to liquidation around 2006 but in 2007 Warner Brother bought up the company to save it and they'll still around too this day making lego games. Hope that helps

    Love the grind rail idea--Buzz is always doing stuff like that in the movie, so it's a natural addition to the game's moveset. The toy car track idea is awesome.

    This was a treasure game for my childhood, and seeing someone put so much work into not only the visual aspect, but the gameplay aspect brings me an incredible amount of joy. Please continue with your project, and please publish the finished project for people to enjoy and play for Nostalgia purposes

    This sounds like it's extra work for not much reward, but as the new Buzz model buttons are part of the rig for his model it would be awesome if he pressed one of the buttons every time he opens his wings like in the movie. Also the grind rails as hot wheel tracks is a great idea. You should definitely do that!

    So excited to see this progress further! There’s so many ways the gameplay can modernise 🤩
    A front flip when he jumps would be very Buzz! Maybe also some way to direct a double jump so if the player collided with a wall, Buzz can leverage the wall to jump even higher/further?
    Also in the vein of Toy Story 2, having an option for Buzz to have his utility belt would be cool. You could have an additional feature where the power goes out to Andy’s house and Buzz has to turn on his utility belt for a single light source and make his way down to the basement to turn the power back on. Could be an interesting challenge on some of the interior levels!!
    Amazing work though man - so excited for the next video!

      I don't even know if it's worth adding, since the original game didn't have it. And regarding the ability to jump off the wall. This should probably be left for the remastered Shrek game for Xbox and Gamecube.

    If I remember correctly, the spin attack also mde you dizzy if you did it for too long. Making you vulnerable to enemies.

      It does make Buzz dizzy in the original game, though I may not add that. It is still undecided. I am trying to make the combat a bit faster paced, much like Metroid Prime remastered compared to the GameCube version. That's also why I am keeping aiming in a focused 3rd person mode instead of making it first person. I'm not changing tons about the game, but I am trying to modernize it a little

    In terms of art style, my personal preference would be to stay true to the art style in the first two Toy Story movies. One cool thing about this is that Pixar actually released a texture library that features many of the textures used in the first movie, so you could really replicate the look. However, ultimately it's up to you, and a Spyro-remake-esque art style could be cool too! Do what you want to see, because that will give you the most motivation to continue working while having fun doing it.

    This is awesome!! I love your additions. It's always a bit annoying having to exit some areas, and your solution with the Rail system it's very fun and engaging. Also, I love the idea of making it look like the Spyro remake. The stylized art style would be fantastic. I would love to help creating 3D assets if you like. Anyway, great work!

    I like the idea of having hot wheels tracks for the grind rails. This is an awesome project and i have such a nostalgic love for this game so I can't wait to see where it goes

    Theres a toggle on most action inputs to allow them to execute when paused. What I normally do for pause menus is have the base widget as a variable in the player controller that gets set when the HUD is created, and run the pause logic there, so when the pause key is pressed the player controller executes the pause, loads the menu and because the input is set to execute when paused, when its pressed again, it toggles pause back off and removes the pause widget using the variable that got set then clears the variable ready to be used again, this is handy imo cos the player controller is where the input mode switches are handled anyway so saves casting to it or calling it in the pause widget itself. Hope that helps your alt F4 issue!

      Thanks for the advice. The main thing is I just haven't made time to setup the UI yet, but you did say something that interests me.
      I usually keep a reference to the UI as you suggested, but when I am done, I collapse it until I need it again. Do you know if it is better or best practice to remove the widget instead of collapsing it?

    The Hot Wheels car on a track for the grinding is such a good idea! If its of any help, the car used on the first movie is a Hot Wheels "Red Baron". In the second movie, the car is a Hot Wheels "8 Crate". There's also a real life kit of the 2nd movie with a track loop and with a red "Classic Nomad" Hot Wheels

    I wouldn't use a single visual object for the grind rails, but something fitting to each environment. For example, Hot Wheels track in the bedroom, hanging wires or copper pipes in basement, etc.

    dot product actually has a range from -1 to 1.
    1 is the same direction
    -1 is the opposite direction
    0 is perpendicular
    Unreal Engine may normalise that range to 0 to 1

    It's fully commendable to redesign this cult game when Disney doesn't seem to want to do any tie-in video games to their films anymore. Obviously, there's still a lot of work to be done, but I am liking the updated models.
    One thing to take note is that I do hope that if you think of doing the later levels to add new elements to the gameplay so it isn't a full carbon copy of the original. For example, giving more uses for the Potato Head items like Disc Launcher and Hover Boots or maybe make some new NPC enemies. One of the complaints many fans have of the original is that that stupid Dinosaur boss in Al's Toy Barn is so stupidly easy. It would be fun to maybe update that boss to make him more tricky.

      Yeah, I'm going to keep it mostly the same, but add some small elements here and there. I think the shield isn't even required for 100% technically. Or if it is, it is just one or two times. So my added elements are mostly to make certain aspects of the original game seem more useful, even if it is small interactions. For example, we just modeled the Globe, and it spins if you use the spin attack!

    You can use IK retargeting to create duplicate retargeted animations. It's a bit of work and takes time and fiddling, but it really works and is the solution you're looking for

I've noticed you use Trello to keep track of your tasks, something I should start doing too to keep all of my thoughts and ideas in one place! I'm curious to know if you also use revision control in your project, in case you need to roll-back to a previous version of your work? Would love to know!

      Hi! Thanks for watching! Yes, I use the free version of perforce and back up everything to a separate PC in a different room of the house. I actually used it some to go back and get footage from different points of development, as I only record what I need to. I do not record everything I do lol

      Also, I've seen Trello used for a lot of things. Game devs usually use it to keep track of tasks, but the company First 4 Figures, who make resin statues, uses it to publicly show where in the production/distribution process the statues are if you preorder them.

    Though you dont have to hoop up all of the struct parameters of the getter and setter like that.
    You can set individual parameters on structs using the "break" and "set members" nodes.
    On the right side panel you can change which parameter pins to show/hide.

    Cool stuff! Unreal 5.3 has some really nice Animation Retargeting additions they've made; you could consider using the old Buzz model in Mixamo to get the animations and then retarget them to your new one

    Look into UE5's new IK Retargeter. You're able to share animations between different skeletons at runtime without any type of retargeting of individual animation assets. Lyra has an example of it being used too if you need reference, otherwise I'm sure there's tutorials out there on it

    Personally, while a more Spyro style-painterly look wouldn't be bad, I'd personally prefer the visual direction to be more faithful to Toy Story 2 *the movie* as a showcase of how far technology has come as well as it just being neat to have a playable version of the movie in real-time that just so happens to be a remake of the Toy Story 2 *game* (kinda like a Render96 situation)

      The issue is I'm not very good at communicating in a way that helps with deep levels of education. So, while not against it, I don't think I will do tutorials, mostly because of that and my charisma not being anything special. This is why in my current videos, I stay pretty basic with what I mention on a technical level. Though, I do try to teach at least one or two concepts of technical game design or programming every episode. In this episode, it was the dot product moment for example (which I got wrong because I was recording the episode at something like 4 or 5am and didn't catch it in editing lol).
      I will also mention that I want to do more of my simple videos as well. They won't make anything financially like these Toy Story videos will, but it is at least more content for my fans to enjoy while I work on this game lol If you didn't see, an example of this was an episode where I talk about my favorite game devs on RUclips. That video became more work than I expected still, but it was nothing to how much work goes into this game haha

    I think instead of just grinding, let buzz use his wings too and glide. That would be so fucking cool like at the construction site weaving through the girders. Although places like the staircase should be grindable. While im thinking bout the construction site it would be cool if you make a really big splash in the concrete if you fall from a great height that was one of my favorite things jumping in concrete from up high.

    it's be great for a BLOSC UE game each episode will be a mission and I'd say a proper conclusion is for Zurg to be VERY SECURELY ARRESTED which I know they couldn't really do in the pilot because Zurg would definitely get a Death Sentence but seriously if a modern cannon friendly UE game was made for BLOSC that'd be the best sci fi cop/military game EVER!!

I've loved Toy Story since I was a kid but never heard of this game (maybe because I didn't have a ps1 at the time), really interested to see it develop and the new spins you're putting on it!     Personally would like to see the art style replicate 90's era Pixar. Would be a fun nod to see the cheesy wood textures and stuff that they used (and might make any animation problems more forgivable)
    RE: Grind rails - what if instead of having 2 separate objects for it, might be cool if grinds, ziplines and swinging poles were all the same object and the player can use them for different purposes based on how they approach it. Opens up more possibility for player expression.

      As far as the grind rails go, I considered making them the same, but the issue is if I change the mesh of grind rails to hot rail tracks, then ziplines don't make sense at that point. So it depends more on the art I add than anything else right now

    Progress is coming along very nicely!
    I do have one question, for the collectables, why not just have a base collectable and create child collectables for each type?
    It would remove the need for the enum,and the switch with masses amount of code.
    BP_Collectable would handle the pick up and call a function `PickedUp`
    Collectable_Coin - would override PickedUp and run the code
    Collectable_PizzaToken - same thing
    Unless I missed something? :)

      Hey! Great question! The answer is that since the collectables system is so small in this game, I wanted to test out different ways to quickly change collectable types in the editor without having to drag in different child blueprints. So, if I want to change a pickup from a pizza token to a coin, I can just change the enum type, argument, and mesh, which would hopefully be faster than dragging in a different bp into the scene. Since all of the pickups in this game are super simple, the code is small enough where I could justify doing it this way as a test. I could take this further if I wanted to treat it more like a tool and even automatically change the meshes as well depending on the enum selected (a coin type will always use the coin mesh for example).
      I'm not sure this is actually really worth it though compared to the time it would save, so you are probably right that this isn't the optimal way of doing it. But like I said, I just wanted to try lol

    You should delete the skeleton rig of buzz and bring it back into mixamo and have them generate an armature for you. Then it will work. You can then add your own personal animations to it from blender

    Hi level redesign in your fable 1 remake can you make brightloge from fable legends beta , fable legends was a prequal to fable 1 but got cancelled and id like to see a broken down brightloge as i think it would make sesnce that brightloge would be abandoned whilst having loot from the old kingdom for the player to loot 😊

      @@squidplays7352 I do want to go back to my Fable remake eventually. I only set it on pause because of a plug in issue that I was waiting for the dev to fix that kept getting promised would be fixed soon.
      I will have to look at that from Fable Legends. I never played the public Fable Legends beta demo. I wish I had :/

    Grind feels a nice addition but how about just gliding with a boost in a set direction ? To make buzz dream come true.. atleast for some seconds

      Hey! Great question! I hadn't considered a glide, however I have thought about a dash (both ground and air). I want to increase the pacing of the game, which is why I am adding grind rails in the first place. The big concern is animation work though. That is very time consuming to get to look decent!

      @@Level_reDesign i feel ya, i was just thinking "why would there be random lines to grind on in that places xD" the rest of the room furniture feels so well placed and thought of so yeah a dash or gliding would make more sense to me - but you are doing the work so you know best whats harder to create :) keep it up!

    I would not recommend using the CableComponent for the ropes as it could move with physics, and you cannot easily track and control that. I would suggest using a SplineMeshComponent instead (that is driven by a SplineComponent).

    For the Auto aim, I think you should make it so that the character smoothly turns towards the enemy, rather than just snapping the laser to the enemy.
    It looks janky to go from shooting nothing, the laser snapping to an enemy, then snapping back when the enemy is defeated.

      Yeah, so the plan is I am going to actually aim the arm in the direction of the target, then lerp it between targets. Lerp is basically just doing something over a specific amount of time, so in this case, moving the arm to aim between different targets over a specific amount of time (likely just a few frames though I won't know exactly until I start doing it). So while it looks a little silly right now, it will be corrected! :)

      ​@@Level_reDesign It's a shame, Resistance 2 is one of Insomniac Games' classics, so much quality and detail, although any Resistance game is impressive, if you could try it out and maybe remake one of them, that would be amazing and I would be so grateful.

    About gameplay graphic art style. Would be amazing if you would make the graphic style like it was in toy story 3 game. Btw you ever thought about remaking Toy Story 1. Would be amazimg to get a 2d game with new graphic ❤

      I played Toy Story 3 back in October, and man is that a good game. It still looks incredible on the Series X too! I mentioned Spyro as an inspiration for the art direction, but a better goal to set would have been a style in between of Spyro Reignited and TS3.
      As far as Toy Story 1, I think it would be fun to remake, but I'm not looking to do any 2D games at the moment, mostly because I am still trying to get really good at 3D game development.

      I am actually not against that idea, but I need more done before it would ever get greenlit. Also, I need some better art too first. At the very least, I would need the first level 100% done to maximize the chance of them approving it. But Disney has been publishing a lot since they closed down their internal studios.
