There is one small thing that still bothers me. No matter what unit in the armed forces, that you serve in, there is normally a shoulder patch. If you are in an SF A detachment you wore the SF shoulder patch. But SOG oversaw all the branches. But no MACVSOG shoulder patch, tab, or badge was ever approved. Yet for 50 years almost all the SOG vets accepted the skull graphic as the MACVSOG icon.

Army Special Forces soldiers who served with SOG were classified as members of the 5th Special Forces Group assigned to a “Special Operations Augmentation.” Marine and Air Force aviators and Naval advisors were assigned to their normal units and tasked to support SOG missions. All wore the shoulder patches of their units. Thus SOG had an unofficial unit insignia but no shoulder patch.

Ssg Mills was my platoon sergeant and best friend for twelve months. We spent about 18 hours a day together. Come to think of it, he was black.
