The magical world isn't a separate place, it's just hidden in plain sight. Wizards can put spells on places that will appear, to muggles, as a place they don't want to be. For example - Hogwarts castle, to a muggle would appear like a run down and crumbling castle. There are also spells that would make the muggle think of someplace or somewhere else that they need to go. It doesn't really specify, in the movie - but in the book, the sorting hat would speak to the student's mind and the only audible thing to everyone would be when he shouts out the House. Heads of Houses: Gryffindor- Professor McGonagal Slytherin - Professor Snape (teaches Potions) Hufflepuff - Professor Sprout (also teaches Herbology) Ravenclaw - Professor Flitwick (teaches Charms) It's basically like a dorm situation. Each year has their communal room, so all the first year boys are roommates, etc, etc. Same with girls. Also, they made it kind of like it was favoritism towards Harry with the broom, though in the book professor McGonagal had to get permission for Harry to have a broom because normally, first years are not allowed brooms, but as he is on the team, they sent away for a broom for him. There are three kinds of balls in Quidditch. The Quaffle is the big red ball that they use to score points when thrown through each side's hoops. Then there are two smaller black balls and they are called Bludgers - they are enchanted to rocket around trying to unseat the players - it is the Beaters position's job, to knock the bludgers away from their team with small bats and they aim them at the opposing team. Then there is the Snitch, that is the little gold ball that flies around. It is the Seekers job to catch it. Catching it, awards the team 150 points and it also will end the game. The game will not end until the Snitch is caught. There are referee's but the movie doesn't touch on that - in the books, the Slytherin team had a lot of fouls called on them for them playing dirty The spell that Hermione uses on Neville 'Petrificus Totalus' is basically a freezing spell. He can still see and hear people, but he can't move at all Not all Slytherin's are evil, it's just that the personality traits and values that Slytherin favors are those that would make it more likely for someone to go down that path. The four Hogwarts houses in Harry Potter are each associated with certain traits and values: Gryffindor Values bravery, chivalry, and helping others. Gryffindors are known for being courageous and never backing down from a fight. Their mascot is a lion, and their colors are scarlet and gold. Hufflepuff Values hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play. Hufflepuffs are known for being dedicated, patient, and loyal. Their mascot is a badger. Ravenclaw Values intelligence, knowledge, planning ahead, and wit. Ravenclaws are known for being eccentric and are often the source of great wizarding inventors and innovators. Their mascot is an eagle, and their colors are blue and bronze. Slytherin Values ambition, cunningness, heritage, and resourcefulness. Slytherins are known for being ambitious, shrewd, and possibly destined for greatness. Their mascot is a serpent and their colors are green and silver
Males are Wizards, and females are Witches, but they are also generically referred to as Wizards, male or female. It's kind of like girls saying to their female friends, "Come on, guys, let's go." They don't say in the movies, but there is a large kitchen below run by elves. They make the food, and when it's time, they transport it to the tables above with magic.
It was nice watching a young woman enjoying this for the first time. You really got into the magic of the movie and had so much fun you made it fun for us also.
Although they did make sets, a lot of it was filmed in or based on real places. The school itself is Alnwick Castle in England, with the much of the insides being Oxford University. The railway bridge is the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland - and yes, you can take a ride on the "Hogwarts Express".
The wand chooses the wizard but Ollivander usually has a good idea what wand fits what wizard/witch. The wizarding parts of the world exist unseen alongside the muggle world. Most wizards even live in or close to muggle villages/towns. Hermione reads..a lot. She also did what I used to do and read all of her schoolbooks as soon as she got them. I'm sure her textbooks were a lot more interesting than some of mine were though. 🤣 Ron has 5 older brothers who were all Gryffindor. 2 have already graduated and have jobs. His sister is too young to go to Hogwarts yet. The paintings are done with magic. They aren't the real people who were the subjects if the paintings. Some are imbued with the personality of the real person though.
@@ronweber1402 The books yes. But the movies clearly take place in the 00s. Everything from clothes, hairstyles, technology, and the Millennium Bridge (which was built in 2000), demonstrate that. The books take place in the 90s. The movies in the 00s. It's very clear that the movies were set in the 00s to appeal to the younger target audience. People can try to come up with all manner of headcanon to make the movies still set in the 90s. But that's nothing but cope. People try to bring up James and Lily's gravestone as "proof". 😎👍 The main characters in this series age a year with each successive film. In this movie, they're all 11 years old. In the 2nd movie, they're 12, in the 3rd movie they're 13 etcetera etcetera. By the final film, they're seniors and ready to graduate.
Ya kids from magical families really had a leg up because I presume most of them were doing minor magic before they went to Hogwarts even though technically it was against the law.
It's so cool and refreshing to see someone watch this movie without any foreknowledge about the lore or the Harry Potter universe. :) I hope you will enjoy the rest of the movies too. They'll keep getting better.
Love it! It's charming, isn't it? I read all the books when they first came out and was excited to see each movie too. So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing this one, VG.
Welcome to Harry Potter! I'm glad you enjoyed the first one 💜 it only gets better and better from here! It's set in the 90s, so normal muggles (non-magic) dress normal but the wizarding world has his own community separated from the rest of the world (it's not another dimension though just hidden) they have centuries of traditions and that's why some clothes and interior look like they have been stuck in old times. I'm sure you will love all the rest of the movies! Keep going ~ (about the editing, I think it would be best if you showed a little bit of each scenes, the most important parts, rather than show almost whole scenes but chopping down a huge chunk of scenes in between, if you know what I mean? Try different things to see what works best 💜)
Welcome to The Wizarding World rabbit hole that is Harry Potter. The best thing about the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, to me is that the chambers following the third-floor corridor containing Fluffy each play to the strengths of Harry, Ron and Hermione. The Devil's Snare chamber caters to Hermione's knowledge of spells. (Even though she froze up out of fear in the book and had to be reminded that she was a witch by Ron) The room with the winged keys caters to Harry's skill with quidditch. And the chess room caters to Ron's knowledge of how to play chess. Side notes: The Sorting Hat chooses new students' houses based on their corresponding personality traits: Gryffindor-Bravery, helping others, and chivalry. Hufflepuff-Hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play. Ravenclaw-Intelligence, knowledge, and wit. Slytherin-Ambition, cunning and resourcefulness. Erised (The Mirror of Erised) is the word desire spelled backward. Hedwig is a snowy owl. They have ruffled wing feathers to silence their flight, so prey animals don't hear them coming. They also have natural camouflage due to their coloration, and they're one of the only birds who don't have bare feet due to their habitat, like the Arctic Tundra. At the time of the deaths of Lily and James Potter at the hands of Voldemort, Harry was only 15 months old.
I love your genuine questions and reactions!!! Very refreshing, makes the movie all new again. Thanks. I love the vintage feel of the first two movies. Ollivanders reminds me of a shoe store we used to go to when I was a kid. Looks just like it instead of wand boxes they were shoe boxes. 'When you paid you gave your money to the clerk. The clerk put the money in a box that somehow traveled on ropes and pulleys to an office up in a loft area. They made the change up there and sent the change back down to the clerk. That memory fascinates me to this day.
Quidditch, the wizarding sport, isn't that hard to understand. Two teams, 7 players per team. 3 players on each team are the chasers, responsible for putting the primary ball (the quaffle) into one of the three hoops to score 10 points. 2 beaters on each team who use bats to hit one of the two bludgers into other players to knock them out. A keeper on each team to defend their hoops, and a seeker on each team, responsible for catching the golden snitch, which is worth 150 points and ends the game. The game does not end until the golden snitch is caught. When it is caught, the team with the most points after those 150 are awarded is the winning team. That's it. There are almost no conditions in which it is considered appropriate to cancel a game, though a few exceptions have been made here or there.
The reason Harry must return to his family at the end of each school year is revealed in one of the later books. The books were far richer in detail and of course good as the movies are, more and more of that detail is lost as the series progresses simply because the books doubled and then trebeled in content!
In some fiction magic is just ability some people have, like whether you are born near sighted or far sighted. In this kind of fiction there is no religion involved or demons or devils. In Harry Potter stories witches and wizards can be good, evil, indifferent, just like everyone else. These stories are written for children; magic is just a kind wish fulfillment for children who are frustrated by an adult world too complicated and big for them.
