When I was a little girl, used to go watch my Grandfather cooked in his restaurant, and a lot the time was making Egg Foo Young, brings back so much memories!
This is the fourth egg foo young recipe I've seen and they're all different! Just goes to show that any recipe can be adjusted/ changed as you like. I love Asian cooking!
My mother and I have eaten egg foo young all our life and always have struggled to make it. This video gave us the restaurant secrets we been looking for to make the perfect simple egg foo young. Thank You!
In my 25 years in the Chinese restaurant business after my family retired in 1996, what he is making is more healthier modern twist, missing in the egg foo young is some seasoning like some white pepper, salt, soy sauce, etc. For his gravy, most Chinese restaurant add some lard or vegetable oil to make the sauce more silky. Plus some Chinese restaurant add optional MSG for both the egg foo young and sauce, but again to each his own.
For some of the detractors out there, for the sauce there are many ways to do it so to each their own. Change it to suit your taste but don't crap on the guy for missing ingredients. I have always added or deleted items to suit my family's tastes. At least he gives you the basics which is all you need. Be inventive people!!!

I would have added a pat of butter, but I would eat this dish as prepared by this guy. { PS- I add butter to damn near everything } My only issue with the video was I feel he rushed the patties. But, I also think it was because he knew they were making a video. He probably lets them brown a bit more before pulling them out normally. It looks like a winner to me.

Hi Gwen, the brown sauce in the gravy was oyster sauce. The cooking tool with holes that he used to remove the egg foo young from the oil is called a wok skimmer. hope this helps!
I love egg foo young. I make vegetable ones and use a nonstick fry pan with small amount of oil. From your video I now know how to make the sauce to go with it. I was using soy sauce.

I just saw several other youtube videos making this. They added too many ingredients and made it harder than it should be. Your egg foo young looked and I’m sure tastes the best!! I’ll making this.
Okay, so I made this last night. It was so good! I'm allergic to shrimp, so I put fresh sliced mushrooms, garlic, bean sprouts, and thin-sliced scallions into my egg foo young. It was too die for! The only thing I didn't like was the oyster sauce. It's too salty. It's very tricky because if you don't put enough in to the sauce mixture (I dumped the first batch out) it's bland and watery tasting, a smidge too much and it's over-powering. I read you can substitute low-sodium soy sauce instead. I'll try that next time.
teacherteacher I know it is a year late me telling you this, but for my sauce in place of soy sauce I use Braggs amino acid. Also I don't use the oyster sauce i use organic Best chicken (or beef) bullion.

Thank you for this recipe / instruction Sir. I enjoyed it. I have one question regarding egg foo youngs. Where I live, all of the egg foo youngs have the meat / vegetables / seafood on the inside. However, in Denver, they have them on the outside and covered in the gravy / sauce. It it regional or just how the cooks want to serve it ?
This guy does it right. I always judge a chinese restaurant by their egg foo young. 9 out of 10 times the gravy is either thick pasty and grey from adding flour and flavorless or watery and flavorless. Oyster sauce and corn starch are the right ingredients to give you that unctuous flavor bomb of umami that makes or breaks this dish. My hats off to you wonderful people.

try to replace the oyster sauce with ketchup
Use Braggs Liquid Aminos...its a healthy,less salty,type of soy sauce...very tasty.

Hi, oyster sauce would be ideal, but if you want to try something besides it, you can try sugar and soy sauce as a replacement
