This is now my second favorite voice for Gordon Freeman, arguably a bit more fitting than the one in Freeman's Mind, but man it's a close second for me.
Agreed, Ross Scott is the definitive Gordon Freeman voice, but this one's not too shabby, and has the same air of "everything about this situation I am in is objectively stupid by real world logic". The writing for this video is on point.
Ross' Freeman would agree, a load of the early section is him asking: "Where is my helmet?", Wishing he had a helmet and complaining that he couldn't find his helmet. Hell the only reason he didn't take one from the HEV corpses was he didn't think it would be sanitary. He absolutely wanted a helmet.
The suit does in fact have a helmet XD in the first game it comes with a helmet canonically, because some of the other men you can find around with HEV suits have helmets on. But for some reason, Gordon does not have a helmet. My theory is that he lost it after the failed experiment resulting in the resonance cascade.
The designer of the original HL1 HEV suit once commented that Gordon is wearing the helmet, it's just not shown on the HEV suit model, the 3rd person model, or the game artwork because they thought it looked cooler without. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but hey, this is black mesa. The facility that has rivers and waterfalls of green radioactive acid, even to the way to your office.

The staff at Black Mesa specifically didn't issue him an H.E.V helmet because they could sense the plot armor emanating from him. Also Gordon doesn't need to hear all this, he's a highly trained professional.
It screams “stressed out college nerd” when my best friend who is in a science major seriously dislikes a design he will speak in this exact tone with the same mannerisms, funniest shit.
That's what I thought as well. I believe the helmet was tucked away within the suit (Like the suit helmets in Dead Space) and assembles once the person wears the suit. I'm pretty sure the helmet snapped off once the Cascade happened either from the explosions or from the electrical energy portals.
@@pkdeathrow3142 Gordon's helmet isn't canonically retractable like the Dead Space helmets, it appears to be rubber for the neck part and is detachable.
That shotgun animation was perhaps the best thing about this video for me. I dunno just watching and hearing it was satisfying. Anyone else agree on this?

Being that Guy here, in the original the Headpiece is a deployable Biohazard hood with Gasmask. Not a Helmet but it would protect you from Hazardous materials and is in the neck piece. All the Vanity shots have Gordon with it un-deployed so we can see his marketable face but the HL multiplayer models and the corpses in Xen have the Hood deployed and Dev's have confirmed Canonically Gordon wears the full suit with hood during the events of Black Mesa. The Remastered Models from Black mesa have a separate helmet piece on the Bodies which is my only gripe with what is otherwise a excellent remake.
I can't help believing Gordon actually does have a helmet. After all, the HUD is presented as existing in-universe so it must be on something, and the suit provides oxygen.
We know how to use safety equipment and then cuts to the scene where Gordon is like, yeah sure while there is a security guard burning, a scientist climbing in the soda machine and another scientist being psychotic
Fun little tidbit, the helmet of an HEV suit _will not_ protect you against a head crab. The HEV Zombies in Black Mesa attest to that, they just bit right through the helmet.
I love how when Gordon specifically points out the suit has "Hazardous Environments" in it's name, the other scientist immediately says he voted against it. The dude knows EXACTLY how stupid it is to not equip Gordon with a helmet, but he just can't say "Yes, I KNOW it is stupid" for the whole time, up to the very end of the video.
I _think_ the name thing was a joke about how much of a stretch the acronym is, pulling H.E.V. from "Hazardous EnVironment". Not Greg was talking about voting against naming it that because it's kinda stupid lol

The reason everyone assumes Gordon isn't wearing a helmet is because the in-game model for the suit when he picks it up doesn't visibly have one, and pictures of him wearing it show him without one. However, if he has no helmet, how is the suit providing him with air underwater and projecting his interface in front of his face? I thus conclude he is actually wearing a helmet, and the helmet is normally stored inside the chest of the empty suit. The pictures of him wearing the suit but no helmet are purely so players can see Gordon's face.

I don't know what surprises me more... that he survived the entire game without a helmet, or that despite being late to work he continues to talk about the shortcomings of the suit.
My best guess to why Gordon's suit didn't have a helmet is cause everybody just fucking hated him and wanted him gone Though, now here he is 20 years later after the black mesa incident being the saviour of the world!
Even worse: In Half Life 2, Dr Kleiner, KNOWING Gordons going to be SHOT AT and ATTACKED BY HEADCRABS doesn't give him a helmet. And at no point in any of the games does Gordon think to maybe just scavenge a helmet from the countless soldiers he kills. Not even when he goes to Ravenholm, a place infested with headcrabs and headcrab zombies does he try to get a helmet. Not only is it an old mining town I'm almost certain had a bunch of hard hat props lying about in it, but even if there wasn't, Gordon has a god damn damn gravity gun which can apply a great deal of force to objects, perhaps enough that could make his own helmet out of a piece of scrap metal to protect his head.

well i think it was in the suit and when we activated it, it automatically gives us the helmet also a reason why the Hud is there :D

The best part about the first Half Life is that this passive aggressive interpretation of Gordon is entirely plausible and possibly even canon.
Meanwhile in the Zen dimension there are several characters in HEV suits with helmets, except they are all dead… guess it’s like Stormtrooper armor.

My best guess to why Gordon's suit didn't have a helmet is cause everybody just fucking hated him and wanted him gone
Though, now here he is 20 years later after the black mesa incident being the saviour of the world!
What's even funnier is that multiple versions, models, and concepts have helmets.

Alright dawg, that shotgun animation was dope as hell!
Even worse: In Half Life 2, Dr Kleiner, KNOWING Gordons going to be SHOT AT and ATTACKED BY HEADCRABS doesn't give him a helmet. And at no point in any of the games does Gordon think to maybe just scavenge a helmet from the countless soldiers he kills. Not even when he goes to Ravenholm, a place infested with headcrabs and headcrab zombies does he try to get a helmet. Not only is it an old mining town I'm almost certain had a bunch of hard hat props lying about in it, but even if there wasn't, Gordon has a god damn damn gravity gun which can apply a great deal of force to objects, perhaps enough that could make his own helmet out of a piece of scrap metal to protect his head.
