Wilredo Gomez...the GOAT at 122 lbs... Brilliant fighter...
I remember watching this fight. Wilfredo Gomez was just too strong for Derek Holmes who actually looked like he was dehydrated. He fought well for two rounds and then just seem to have nothing everytime he threw a couple of punches. He looked dead, No legs plus Gomez was a dominant puncher at that weight. Gomez would hold title in that weight class for over 6 years and something like 17 title defenses.
Holmes looks too slim for Gomez. Gomez looks big and strong here, that must be a factor
Indeed did Holmes look ready to pull the upset for a couple of rounds a least

Biggest problem here was Holmes thought he could replicate his win from the amateurs and bomb Gomez out quickly again. Burnt himself out and didn't have enough to hold him off. All things considered that was probably his best shot and it made for a good fight
@@chriswelcome8102 Derrick didn't look mentally prepared for a distance fight. Like you said Derrick started well, but when Gomez survived it, Derrick seemed to want out of there - Gomez always on balance & can come back with every punch & combo in the book which creates a lot of pressure as well.

Gomez had that little grudge since the amateurs.

I was 2 little to be in to boxing at this time, but damn Wilfredo Gomez, was a beast with a very impressive knockout record!!! Many may argue but in my opinion the greatest fighter that came out of Puerto Rico ❤️

Brother looked good for a couple of moments the first two rounds there was hope then he just fell apart at this time Gomez was just peaking like a pearl

It was this fight. Holmes told me Gomez broke his jaw.
Holmes rocked Gomez in the first round but didn't capitalize !
The commentators got a bit overexcited, Gomez wasn't rocked at all.
