In this video, I react for the first time to the Canadian artist City & Colour otherwise known as Dallas Green performing a cover of Alice in Chain's song “Rain When I Die”. I analyze his amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This is an amazing tune and I am so glad I finally reacted to it!

Hello, gorgeous! I'm Lolli, your Fairy Voice Mother. I am a voice teacher & vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing all the time in styles such as pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practicing new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too. I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Well. Special talents can be learnt, and I am here to teach them to you.

I am so glad you’ve reacted to Dallas Green! PLEEEEEAAAASE check out more of him, he is fkn amazing!!!!
Grand optimist is one of my favorite songs
Wish I could upvote this 10000 times. This channel needs to do a deep dive on Dallas Green. I'd also love to see her hit some Thom Yorke. Maybe In Rainbows, reckoner, something like that.
Very few vocalists age this gracefully. To go back and see what a raw talent he was in the early 2000’s to the incredibly refined talent he is now is astounding.
Dallas Green is a Canadian treasure. His voice should be protected by the Mounties, imo 😂❤
Agreed. Unfortunately, they only protect political interests.
His album, “Little Hell” by City and Colour, is perfection. 🇨🇦
That’s my favorite album too
Bring Me Your Love is incredible too
@@rylandozBring Me Your Love is the most one i always listen and sing this album is perfect
I was hooked as soon as I heard Fragile Bird, and just found more reasons to love his stuff
I've heard his voice described as "buttery smooth", I don't think even butter could ever be as smooth as his voice
Listen, I have been a die hard Dallas Green fan since like 05’. I saw him live 10 times with both of his bands. I could never understand why is voice is so magical, you just explained it to me in a couple of minutes ❤. Thank you.!!! This dude his a hidden treasure.
Btw, in his live CBC performance of Bow Down To Love, he absolutely belts a couple of lines, if you want to hear him go hard. ❤
A real treat when you discover the album he made with Pink called You + Me.
Seconded. This album is hella underrated imo, such a masterpiece of emotive vocal performances from both artists.
or you know, the 7 solo albums, or the 5 albums he did with alexisonfire.
That album is beautiful. I wish there was more you+me
@@lostsignalspodcast The end of Dogs Blood Live or even Midnight Regulations. They show off his voice best.
This is my favorite ever reaction to someone hearing Dallas Green for the first time!! I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. Love it!!
Me too!!!
Welcome to Dallas Green fandom!
He is the best singer in the world. I dont think it is even close. Put his live performance up against ANYONE and he smokes them. He is my favorite artist of all time
This dude's voice is unreal
Sidewalks when she walks,by alexisonfire, is good song to check out Dallas’s earlier singing
my fave! 🖤💀
Check out his very first band Helicon Blue
Please go down the Dallas Green Rabbit Hole!!! He's such an underrated singer/songwriter. Personally i discovered him last year, and it's my go to music whenever i don't know what i wanna listen to in any given moment. Do "If I Should Go Before You". I almost tear up every time i hear it - and i'm a 47 year old bloke god dammit!! :D
Omg PLEASE check out Alexisonfire! Dallas' smooth vocals mixed with George's screams and Wade's grit is simply perfection. It's hard to suggest only a couple songs since they are literally all good, but This Could be Anywhere in The World and Young Cardinals come straight to mind, and Sweet Dreams of Otherness and Sans Soleil off their most recent album.
The Canadian homies 🥰🤘
Dallas Green has an incredible voice - he's one of my FAV voices
my favorite voice ever. Several incredible studio albums and he’s even better live.
Glad you found Dallas. Ive seen him twice as city & colour and 4 times with Alexis, hes got the most mesmorizing voice ive ever heard
Chris Cornell's daughter Lily Cornell did a cover of 'Black Gives Way to Blue" from the same Alice in Chains tribute that this cover came from. Her voice is beautiful.
Love Dallas Green. More City and Color please!
You literally made the faces and had the reaction we all felt. It is really hard to deny talent and emotion when someone is just ripping through the heartstrings. Love the channel!
His voice is of an angels. For sure. Glad someone caught on.
I think one of my favorite thing of your reactions when I see you react to a pretty special voice like this is how you get so engulfed by it, it literally makes you squirm and have a physical reaction to it.
Please never change how you react to music
so, so glad to see city and colour get more recognition. this cover is incredible, but his whole catalogue is tough to beat!
So glad to see this, I requested Dallas Green from a similar channel and it didn’t happen. He’s by far my favorite vocalist, not too mention the songwriting and his amazing band City and Colour. I saw them in concert awhile back and felt like I had a religious experience (100% sober)!
So happy to see you're reacting to Dallas! Too few people know of him! He's also in Alexisonfire - Another incredible band!
Still dreaming of a "Dallas in Chains" album.
Dallas is an absolute SLAYER..
I kick myself everytime I hear city and colour, just reminds me how I missed a show few years back when they came to my city. another singer/songwriter in this same vain is Gregory Alan Isakov his cover of the "trapeze swinger"
You + Me is Dallas Green and Pink together. They did a cover of Sade's No Ordinary Love that you should check out.
Dallas Green is a fucking genious! I didnt know he covered AIC.
If you listen to the original Alice in Chains song you will see how even MORE AMAZING this version is. They are SOOO different.
I loooooove City and Colour (Dallas Green). I'm so glad someone put you onto them!
Dallas is freaking incredible in concert too. I saw him when he opened for Alice in Chains. So so good.
It's a great cover, the pain in Layne's voice in the original is on another level tho, would be nice to see a reaction to the original.
Crazy to me that soooo many sleep on this guy, Dallas Green and his band, City and Colour.
Get it?...... City... Dallas. Colour...Green. lolololol :p
Sadly I discovered him/them sorta late myself, I wanna say it was around 2014/15 or so, and he had originally started the band in 2005-ish with their first album called 'Sometimes'. The first time I had heard them, I was in a pretty bad spot, addicted to opiates, which I eventually was able to overcome with the help of their music. But I think back on my high school days and how much better off I would have been if I'd had such an amazing band/lyrics to listen to back in those days if I had discovered them back then. Ugh! lol. I guess he also was the clean vocalist in a metalcore band as well, way way back, like early 2000's, in Canada. They were called Alexisonfire. I've heard a handful of their songs and most definitely Dallas is the standout lol. Don't get me wrong, I dig me some metal, but yeah... Dallas Green, as always, even in his younger days, was a legitimate musical freakin genius. Again, how he isn't at the top of the charts globally is beyond me. 🤷♂
I definitively say that City and Colour are without a doubt among my top 3 musical artists/bands/what have you. And I'd be surprised if they ever leave that spot. Every single album is straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 although I wouldn't recommend them if you aren't too keen on sadder sounding songs or lyrics. Don't ask me why, but I very very much am lol. Maybe that's why I'm so damn susceptible to fuckin my life up every now and again. I'm currently about to enter inpatient rehab for the first time ever for alcohol starting tomorrow morning. Wish me luck! But yeah, point of all this is that if you are into this kinda music and you're down for checkin out something new to listen to, without a doubt, check out City and Colour. You very VERY much will not be disappointed. Awesome vid, FVM!
" it would be perfectly fine...but it wouldn't be THIS"- Quote of the Decade, that!
I was here for this and when you get Lolli to drop the hard "FUCK", you know its a masterpiece! I hope to see you react to more City in Colour sometime soon! I havent listened to him in years but the early stuff right after he left Alexisonfire, is still some of my favorite indie style music.
I was high for days after seeing him Valentines day in saskatoon 2024
I'm excited you did this as I've been requesting him for years to many vocalists.
Yeah Dallas (City) Green (Colour) does that to people 😁 I remember picking my jaw up off the floor hearing his first album years ago. Please do more!
This song is my absolute favorite AIC song, and this is an incredible cover. 🤗
I watched this performance many times after the live, and it's still worth watching your analysis again it's so good.
Check out his cover of Hometown Glory by Adele at Royal Albert Hall. The balls to do that song in that Hall.....
You will not believe it.
Dude.... absolutely. He killed that...... the guy is just brilliant. Makes us mortal human singers want to hang up the 'ol gloves
I've seen city and colour 7 times. I have bring me your love tattoos. I'm so glad you reacted to my absolute favorite artist.
Voice and song writing skills. Highly underrated.
Listen to the entire album "The Love Still Held Me Near", definitely react to "meant to be" and "underground" both album and his acoustic versions. I was lucky enough to see him this past year in support of this album and what an absolute joy to see him do his thing live. I first found him when Alexisonfire randomly came on with "this could be anywhere in the world" and then randomly came across his solo project months later. This guy should be far more mainstream than he is.
Every time I hear City and Colour or Dallas Green I think "this man has the best voice in the entire world, what the heck" so I am very glad that you seem to agree. Severely underrated.
Seen Dallas live 3 times, twice with City and Colour and once just after his friend died where he toured with his dear friend. Every gig was an ethereal experience.
Also his live performances are just as beautiful.
His voice is one of the best for sure. I saw City in Colour live recently. This is very different than Alice n Chains Rain When I Die, haha. I like them both and love many different Genre's. You have your Dallas Greens and your Layne Stayley's. In fact Dallas green sang in a Heavy Canadian band before City in Colour called Alexis on Fire. Dallas will always be one of my favorite singers, and his Little Hell album got me through a very hard time in my life, and I use it whenever going through hard times.
My first time hearing this cover and he did an awesome job.
Now you need to check out the original with the haunting harmonies that I'm sure you will love as a vocal coach.
She reacts just like I do,I can't handle it in a good way🤘
Dallas Green is one of the best singers, songwriters on this planet.
Oh yeah. This cover made me appreciate the original, which I overlooked at first
Same!
This guy and Alexisonfire as a whole are from very close to where I grew up. Not many good things come out of Ontario but this guy sure is one of them
Its always a pleasure to see you get so excited by a song!
Check out him and Pink's version of No Ordinary Love
Dallas is killer. I've seen him and with Alexis. Awesome vocals but Layne will never be topped on this tune!
i was lucky enough to see Dallas play the Sydney Opera House about 10 years ago. perfect setting for an artist as good as he is. guitar only and his hauntingly beautiful voice. dallas is definitely a rabbit hole to happily go down, specially his first 2 albums which are purely voice and acoustic guitar only. his album with Pink as You+Me is also brilliant, my wife walked down the aisle to the title track off that album at our wedding.
Dallas is life lol I have seen him 35 plus shows. Hes my crack
Dallas green is a legend! Listen to rose ave. He did with pink. Amazing.
I saw Dallas in Edmonton in February, absolutely phenomenal performance. It's definitely worth checking out other songs. A true Canadian treasure!
Every time listen to this version( wich is alot) I have to close my eyes I can't help it
The fact that he is the backup vocals for one of the greatest post hardcore bands is still amazing to me
He’s just the clean vocalist rather than “back up” vocals. Wade would be considered backups
Awesome! Definitely the best AIC cover out there. Other AIC covers leave me feeling like it's off because the vocalist is so far off from Layne. Dallas isn't the same, but is definitely at the same level of quality vocally so he totally pulls this off for me. A beautiful and touching tribute to AIC, the best of that event for sure.
Dallas has the voice of an angel.
Dallas is a vocal god
Love Dallas Green! Save Your Scissors is one of my favorite City and Color songs. Another great song that he sings lead on is The Grace by Never Ending White Lights. Even if you don't do a reaction to them, I highly recommend you check them out.
they say that to this day we are yet to hear dallas voice crack
I saw City and Colour live in a small venue, one of my core memories. Also he is part of a band called Alexisonfire which probably the polar opposite of this.
More City and Colour!!! Dallas, though well loved for sure, is still so incredibly underrated that it makes me sick, lol. You literally can't miss with him, he's one of the most consistently amazing singers I've ever seen (I've seen him live twice and he's even better), and his songwriting matches it.
You need to do more of his stuff. ASAP
Absolutely brilliant cover! 😃🤘
I was about to say "Thank you for introducing me to this artist, he sounds lovely" but then I was like "wait... this voice... sounds familiar..." and saw some comments about alexisonfire... I've been sleeping on this... Thank you for RE-introducing me to this- is what I would like to say
his cover of nutshell is miserably beautiful.
and wait till you hear love dont live here anymore.
omg yes. this is such a powerful performance
Oh my lordy Dallas Green has THE BEST voice EVER! I’m surprised you’ve not stumbled across City and Colour before! He was also in a metal band called Alexisonfire, playing electric guitar and doing clean vocals. Have a look at his piano performance of Happiness by the Kilowatt (an Alexisonfire song) and another good one is Coming Home, perhaps City and Colours biggest hit
When you started to freak out all I could was “Yeah no that’s just Dallas” 😂 I’m glad you loved it, play around with Day Old Hate at some point, you’ll love it
Dallas Green, look him up in the early 2000's lead singer of Alexxisonfire, quite a contrast
omg, this version is sooooo good. Dallas is so good. Seen em in Chicago last year. Must see live.
Great human, I've toured with them. I didn't give them a shot when I was younger, but having met them and really heard their music, my son is now a fan
Dallas is soooo good!!! I love his music...it's RIDICULOUS...so talented
Dallas Green has one of those voices (not just physical) that we'll look back on and wish we had treasured more in the moment. He has plenty of acoustic music just like this or better, and Alexisonfire..... well, you'll have to see for yourself.
His Nutshell cover is amazing as well!
Buried deep in those lyrics, is a fear every man has.
OH! And he also had a Duet with Pink! Called "You+Me" which was an unbelievable combo!
Dallas is the smoothest. From Alexisonfire, City and Colour, to you+me with pink. He’s the best
I know this is a vocal reaction, but, can we recognize his complete control and feel of his guitar playing? It compliments the vocals with the guitar tuning and dissonance of his chord voicings. Incredible performance.
Moooorrreeeeee City and Colour! Also, Alexisonfire - he plays and sings in that band! More Lolli!! MORE!!
I wish I could like this video more times. It slaps every time. Can I PLEASE have you analyze my voice? It would be a dream come true. You feel music the way that I do. My family looks at me like a crazy person when I cry to a song. I'm just glad I'm not alone. Just know that I really appreciate you.
Annnnddddddd welcome to the Dallas Green show, where you will never wanna leave. Then just when you think your heard all of him….. his old band Alexisonfire ignites the flame once more 🥰😎🙌🏻
Great reaction! Looking forward to seeing him this summer. 😎
Dallas Green is an absolute treasure! Whether it is with his own project C&C or his other band Alexisonfire it's always a good time. Have both slow danced and been bruised in a pit drenched in beer to this man's music.
INTENSELY ELEGANTLY HAUNTING
A CANUCK ANGEL
His voice made me cry
rally cool. I am a very amateur singer adn the part about formants was enlightening
You are wonderfully brilliant.!! Talents x 10!!! U should be the juggernaut personality of a company!!! I’m gonna win the lottery, and we will change the world!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Miss Lady, your eye color is just dreamy. Dont know what it is lately, but you are definitely looking right beautiful. The original version by Alice and Chains is fire as well...🎶
Dallas Green (City & Colour, Alexisonfire, You+Me (Duet with P!nk)) is my favorite. He did another cover of Alice in Chains - Nutshell. I recommend giving it a listen as well
