@@tommydacomicguy741 I couldn't recall him really singing in a high voice so I watched a handful of songs on YT and did find some. Prince was very different from Dallas even if they both sing in a high voice for at least some of their songs. Prince was incredibly talented from writing most, if not all, of his own music, to playing any instrument he wanted. From singing as high or low he wanted to "owning" his unique personal style. I would even go as far as to say "there'll never be another guy who can be as unique and talented as Prince." Prince has credibility that Dallas will never match and his personality was bigger than he was. He spent years building his brand and nobody can question the level that he attained. I love Alice In Chains music. I can’t help but to listen to this version over and over. This mans vibrato and voice control is absolutely stunning. It’s beautiful. Hope he makes more Alice In Chains songs
I’m usually not into covers that strip it down. But wow. This version really brings a certain sense of heartbreak when hearing the lyrics in a different light. This is what a great cover is. Sounds nothing like the original, puts his own flare on it, makes you find emotions in the song you didn’t know were there. Of all the times hearing and singing this song, “heartbreak” and “melancholic” is not at all what I associate the song with. Now I can thanks to this man. Amazing cover. These beautiful covers are a matter of legacy and appreciation that’s everlasting long after the musicians are gone. This is what musicians live for.
This is an example of how when a song is good, it doesn't matter how it's played and with what instrumental methods, as long as the elements are quality.
Almost nobody can straight up cover Layne properly. I dig that Dallas didn’t. Instead he turned an amazing song into his own stellar version. Bravo!!! 🔥
Yeah he definitely expresses it in a whole other way and I’m digging it. Always come back to this version. Dallas just has that soulful voice that really lays the lyrics all on the table 🥹
My mom was a good wife and mother but suffered from bipolar disorder and severe depression. My dad was the most wonderful man I've ever known. I'd watch my dad sing along with this song and I would think about the song through his eyes. My mom and dad were together til his last breath. I miss him 😢
@@noneyerbidness why is it odd? Nothing odd about it. Other artists enjoy and appreciate when other artists do their song and put their own into it. Guess you didn't see Heart to "stairway to heaven" while Robert Plant cried in the audience. Stfu with your negative comments
No chord he strikes ever gets boring. You can see the passion and attachment to a guitar. That instrument is literally an extension of his arms. Beautiful passion, and beautiful to hear. Thanks Dallas.
I come back to this video weekly. I love the sheer perfection of Dallas Green's voice on this tribute and the admiration he receives in this comment section has been heartwarming and well-deserved.
Dallas is one of the best live performers of all time. I’ve seen city and colour 5 times and AOF one 1 occasion. He’s like a fine wine vocally. He performed nutshell flawlessly. It’s like he intertwines with your soul
I'm from Southern Ont and have followed Alexisonfire from almost the beginning and City and Colour from the beginning. I was one of the fans begging him to release a solo album. Then sometimes was released and the rest is history. I've seen Alexisonfire probably 20 times, City lkle 18 times cause I'm from roughly their neck of the woods so I'm very fortunate. City played my hometown Oshawa in February as well
In portuguese, "I think it's gonna rain when I die", when translated, turns into a rhyme: "Eu acho que vai chover quando eu morrer." Layne was a genius! Hugs from Brazil. 🇧🇷
to cover alice in chains is such a challange, unique band, unique voice, unique sound, unique attitude... that guy found a really beautiful way, had the chills.
Dallas Green (City and Colour) is a hometown hero in Canada. Really glad they got him involved in this. Fitting to have him, since Alice In Chains is THE REASON he does what he does. In Mr. Green's own words: "Anyone that knows me understands how incredibly deep my love for Alice In Chains goes. I can point to many musical mile markers that have helped me navigate this incredible journey that I’ve been on since I first picked up a guitar, but if you want to get to the bottom of why I make music the way that I do, it is this band. "Dirt was the first record I ever bought with my own money, on my birthday, September 29th, 1992 at the Lincoln Mall in St. Catharines, Ontario." Also, cool how he changed it up by doing it all in 4/4 vs the 6/4 used in most of the original. All in all, amazing cover from a Canadian legend. Check out his releases as City and Colour and with Alexisonfire if you haven't already.
Cant get enough of all of these covers. Thank you mopop the artists who made such great music and especially Alice in Chains. Rest in peace Staley and Starr.
Never have I imagined someone covering this song with this tone or acoustically… then I try and imagine someone, anyone, try and top this performance to this song. I can’t even hum this song in my own head this well.
I was a huge City and Colour fan in my teens, his first three albums are phenomenal. Saw him live once in Boston and he was incredible, what a voice. A little too whiny or emotional for me now but still very talented and beautiful. Little Hell is a masterpiece. But I had stopped listening and forgotten about him over time. Then this comes up on my feed. Wow. Dallas shed a whole new light on this song for me. It feels just like a sad back and forth love song without the reverb and distortion. The notes he hits at the chorus gives me chills. Layne would be thrilled with this! Very imaginative, heart felt and beautiful. Whole new appreciation for this man. There's no Alice without Layne, sorry. Duvall is alright but they should have named themselves something different.
Maaan, I am a musician from Argentina and I have to give North Americans the credit they deserve when it comes to performing acoustic. They are masters songwriters, the chord selection, the textures, the blue scale drenched melodies. Hats off!
I want to thank this man for evoking a new emotion in me I've been needing to feel. This is insanely beyond ANYTHING I have heard in a very long time. My soul has found a way to bear the pain just a little longer without any interruption occuring.
I listen to this 20 times a day. Thank you man. Nutshell hooked me then this pops up a month ago and I have never stopped playing it ever since. It helps me stay in serenity and greatful to be alive. I'm clean three months now and I needed this at the perfect time. Don't stop here man. Your voice makes it easier to let the music and the words drown out the resistance. Thank you
I think Dallas is the most emotionally gripping artist I've ever seen. His myspace transmissions just totally shook me when they came out. And his voice NEVER sounds nothing but absolutely perfect like it was the record.
For me, it rained down when Layne passed. Missed them 3 times because he kept going in rehab and then when we were about to see Jerry Cantrell at Livestock, they cancelled because Layne was gone. Was a torrential downpour knowing that myself, his friends, family, and all of his fans would never get to see them all together again. Sad times, man. Sad times. Beautiful though how all of these musicians came together to honor an iconic part of the 90's and beyond. Thank you for that.
Oh my fucking god man. Thus is absolutely beautiful and the fact that it's not really changed it's all the same notes just with a slightly slower rhythm and more predominantly sung. Dude I honestly believe Layne would have bowed to this performance almost definitely. Way to home onto the nature of the original song and give it your identifying twist. Honestly so much respect I'm completely blown the Fuck away. I'm a vocalist myself and Layne is definitely top three(I'll never rank those 3 any other way) just top 3 of my all time influences and such an underrated pure singer. That man could do impossible things and it's like for so long it just went unnoticed... Anyway sorry for the rant but thank you so very much for this performance and the you and true emotion you put into it. Absolutely amazing
Then you don't know what you're missing. Dallas Green (City and Colour/Alexisonfire) is an amazing artist/songwriter. I've always been a punk rock and heavy metal person, but because of this guy I've expanded my genre of music and inspired me to start playing guitar again a few years ago.
What a beautiful tribute to our lost Layne. I've listened to this a hundred times. Takes me back to the old days of family good times and lost friends and family. RIP Layne

As a professional musician, singing over acoustic guitar, I am completely floored. I have never seen anything so simple performed so perfectly. This is a performance for the record books, it is hard to believe that only a thousand people have seen this.....
1.5 million now
Is she ready to know my frustration?
What she slippin' inside, slow castration
I'm a riddle so strong, you can't break me
Did she come here to try, try to take me?
Did she call my name?
I think it's gonna rain
When I die
Was it something I said, held against me?
Ain't no life on the run, slowly climbing
Caught in ice so she stares, stares at nothing
I can help her but won't, now she hates me
Did she call my name?
I think it's gonna rain
When I die
She won't let me hide
She don't want me to cry
Will she keep on the ground, trying to ground me?
Slowly forgive my lie, lying to save me
Could she love me again or will she hate me?
Prob'ly not, I know why, can't explain me
Did she call my name?
I think it's gonna rain
When I die
💙
O
Those lyrics are unbelievable
I’ll never stop listening to this.
I love Alice In Chains music. I can’t help but to listen to this version over and over. This mans vibrato and voice control is absolutely stunning. It’s beautiful. Hope he makes more Alice In Chains songs
He's already done Nutshell, you gotta check it out!
As an AIC fan I must say I'm f....g impressed. A different rendition to the same end.
You can writing the word fucking.
@@GoAsCloseAsYouCan, that's ok. Thanks.
@@MrCroky123 It’s not okay. Grow the fuck up, Nancy.
This is the best performance of this set. Damn. Goosebumps. Made some of the others sound like straight up Karaoke. ❤😢😮
Dallas’ voice only becomes more and more heartbreaking the longer I listen to him. Superfan forever. 🥹❤️
This is an example of how when a song is good, it doesn't matter how it's played and with what instrumental methods, as long as the elements are quality.

holy moly!!!
One of the greatest musicians of our time for sure, Alexisonfire, City and Colour, and You + Me, it’s all incredible
4:06 absolute goosebumps
R.L. Stein wept. This is a seánce.
Unbelievable performance. Chilling and the best cover of any Alice song I’ve ever heard
Dallas is amazing. If you like this then check out his other AIC cover of NUTSHELL on RUclips. Fanfokntastic
Post Malone just made a way better cover of Them Bones.
Almost nobody can straight up cover Layne properly. I dig that Dallas didn’t. Instead he turned an amazing song into his own stellar version. Bravo!!! 🔥
Fuck. His voice is the sound a soul makes when it leaves the body and ascends!!!
I can already tell this is one of those covers Im going to listen to like 10,000 times. This is better than the actual song
Yeah he definitely expresses it in a whole other way and I’m digging it. Always come back to this version. Dallas just has that soulful voice that really lays the lyrics all on the table 🥹
Dallas's voice is so haunting in such a great way.
My mom was a good wife and mother but suffered from bipolar disorder and severe depression. My dad was the most wonderful man I've ever known. I'd watch my dad sing along with this song and I would think about the song through his eyes. My mom and dad were together til his last breath. I miss him 😢
i can't believe he got this performance all in one take. it is perfect. his tone, his pitch, his pronunciation, everything about it is perfect.
Dal is a huge Layne fan so he's been practicing for absolute years
Not perfect. Only the original is. This is slow and auto tuned to death.
Brought tears to my eyes. Layne would have loved this.
how do you know this? what an odd thing to say.
@@noneyerbidness musicians enjoy impressive performances.. especially when someone covers their song, and nails it outta the park. Not odd at all.
@@johnny888777 Another odd statement. You're generalizing. Stop it.
@@noneyerbidness why is it odd? Nothing odd about it. Other artists enjoy and appreciate when other artists do their song and put their own into it. Guess you didn't see Heart to "stairway to heaven" while Robert Plant cried in the audience. Stfu with your negative comments
@@mellie0402 what you see as negative, I see as realistic. so, which one of us is really negative?
No chord he strikes ever gets boring. You can see the passion and attachment to a guitar. That instrument is literally an extension of his arms. Beautiful passion, and beautiful to hear. Thanks Dallas.
Performed from the Heart and Soul - touched my Heart and Soul. Thank you, brother!
Best performance of the night IMO.
You’re right
This and Metallica for me
@@rumblefish9 Metallica was the worst for me. Only because I know they can do much better.
I come back to this video weekly. I love the sheer perfection of Dallas Green's voice on this tribute and the admiration he receives in this comment section has been heartwarming and well-deserved.
agreed ❤️❤️❤️
What in the holy hell is this immaculate tribute??? This is amazing.
to cover alice in chains is such a challange, unique band, unique voice, unique sound, unique attitude... that guy found a really beautiful way, had the chills.
Jesus, this is good.
Dallas Green (City and Colour) is a hometown hero in Canada. Really glad they got him involved in this. Fitting to have him, since Alice In Chains is THE REASON he does what he does.
In Mr. Green's own words:
"Anyone that knows me understands how incredibly deep my love for Alice In Chains goes.
Catharines, Ontario."
Also, cool how he changed it up by doing it all in 4/4 vs the 6/4 used in most of the original. All in all, amazing cover from a Canadian legend. Check out his releases as City and Colour and with Alexisonfire if you haven't already.
Holy wow that was amazing! I love AiC and the song, but this was just as intense. Glad I stumbled across it tonight!
This cover is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard!
I agree. It's a beautiful version 💖
Cant get enough of all of these covers. Thank you mopop the artists who made such great music and especially Alice in Chains. Rest in peace Staley and Starr.
It’s a crying shame that he didn’t get to hear this version for the first time like we all did. Absolutely astounding!
This has to be one of the best covers of any AiC song ever, simply amazing!!!
The most beautiful cover of any song I've EVER heard..........absolute magic
Some tears fell..damn beautiful version.
Never have I imagined someone covering this song with this tone or acoustically… then I try and imagine someone, anyone, try and top this performance to this song. I can’t even hum this song in my own head this well.
My first reaction when I heard this back in December was just tears rolling down and I couldn't do nothing to stop them. Absolutely brilliant.
How does this not have 150m views yet? Come on youtube algorithm get with the damn program!
He's just too good... You just can't listen to this just once...
Maaan, I am a musician from Argentina and I have to give North Americans the credit they deserve when it comes to performing acoustic. They are masters songwriters, the chord selection, the textures, the blue scale drenched melodies. Hats off!
3 years later and this still gives me goosebumps
There is no other way to explain this than simply calling it a gift. Thank you for this cover.
What a voice!! Soft, smooth and powerful. Amazing cover of one of the greatest songs ever written.
I want to thank this man for evoking a new emotion in me I've been needing to feel. This is insanely beyond ANYTHING I have heard in a very long time. My soul has found a way to bear the pain just a little longer without any interruption occuring.
You should write a song Merima
Listen to his album Sometimes, it’ll change your life
This is so fucking good. Hauntingly beautiful. AiC must have been moved by this performance.
What an incredible cover and tribute. You can tell AIC’s songwriting meant a lot to this guy. He can sing his ass off
I listen to this 20 times a day.
Wither OG Dallas Green fan here. His cover of Live Don't Live Here Anymore from that transmissions session is impeccable as well.
This song needs to come on to Spotify!
I have no idea who this guy is but wow... This truly blew me away... Amazing Job 👏👏
Then you don't know what you're missing. Dallas Green (City and Colour/Alexisonfire) is an amazing artist/songwriter. I've always been a punk rock and heavy metal person, but because of this guy I've expanded my genre of music and inspired me to start playing guitar again a few years ago.
Yes, you must check out his music. City and Colour is my favourite artist.
He also did an amazing album with Pink called You + Me
check out "the grand optimist", beautiful song

What a beautiful tribute to our lost Layne. I've listened to this a hundred times. Takes me back to the old days of family good times and lost friends and family. RIP Layne
Dallas is amazing. If you like this then check out his other AIC cover of NUTSHELL on RUclips. Fanfokntastic
What level of preparation! Feels throughout. He doesn’t growl like Staley but the rage is clearly felt throughout this performance
I wish Layne had recorded songs like this. His voice is already out of this world. I can only dream how he would have sounded singing like this.😢
He would have, but drugs took him. It really sucks.
