  • The great rivalry between Girls Generation and 2ne1 was one for the books. A fan war that rivals no other, Twice vs Blackpink, or Blackpink vs BTS can't compare the viciousness these two fandoms participated in to find which girl group of the 2010s was better.

I'm not even 3 minutes to the video yet but something I need to point out. Girls Generation debuted in 2007. This is actually the 4th video in a week I've watched were the person has stated Girls Generation debuted in 2009. 2009 is the year they blew up online with the release of "Gee." I normally would ignore it as a slip of the tongue. But being the fourth video I've seen I can't help but be curious if everyone is getting this information from the same source?

Correction, 2NE1 did not won SOTY "in a row". They 1st won in 2009 with I Dont Care and 2011 with IATB. They did won Artist and Album of the Year in 2010 hence 4 Dasang Award in 3 straight years.

Dara & Bom were already established artists before debuting in 2NE1. This added to the groups early success. Bom had a few features with Bigbang already & Dara was popular entertainer in the Philippines before moving back to Korea. So when 2NE1 debuted they had a huge Filipino audience from the beginning when Dara moved to Kpop. Great video! Just wanted to add a couple things

As a group: SNSD > 2NE1. But hear me out 😅 Girl groups in general weren’t marketable at the time and experienced a decline before the success of SNSD & Wonder Girls. So in a way SNSD did help 2ne1. I would say the main difference between the two is marketing. SNSD is primarily marketed for Asia while 2NE1 is primarily for the western market. We never got the joint album between Will.i.am & 2NE1 that was heavily teased & promoted. I was/is a fan of both groups. 2ne1 is charismatic whereas SNSD is classy. There’s space for both. ❤
But personally I think SNSD “wins” because more thought went into the formation. Everything from staging, vocals, harmonies & structure. 2NE1 wasn’t supposed to be a group. They all said they were originally supposed to be soloists & it shows.
CL was traded from JYP to start rapping for a hopeful single in YG. Dara was a star in the Philippines. Bom already had a few songs: with Bigbang ‘We Belong Together’ & ‘Forever With U’ & another song with another singer (can’t remember the name right now). All this happened before 2NE1 & their demo track ‘Pretty Boy’ which made the company create the group & feature the song on their first album

Got ur point. But still 2NE1. Simply cuz they're fire on stage. They feel more authentic and spontaneous while SNSD felt too choreographed and directed.

@@arien_000 Yeah I get you too but choreographed & directed (SNSD) is literally kinda the point of a group tho 😂 2NE1 were “authentic & spontaneous” that’s because they were trained be solo pop stars & therefore stronger individually so it makes sense.
      2NE1 > SNSD as individuals
      SNSD > 2NE1 as a group

@@saranguyen2788 nah, they were an excellent group. Each person is distinct but they fit right with each other like puzzles. A rainbow is pretty cuz each part is a different color. It's how you work with your differences. And each of their voices felt the same way - distinct but in harmony with each other - so their songs have a lot of vocal texture.
Also can't beat the fact that their songs and entire albums are good. 2NE1 and BIGBANG songs are the type that you can actually play on the radio and won't care who sang it cuz they're good. SNSD songs are okay but they become really popular cuz it's SNSD who performed them. They were one of the first gg who relied heavily on visual appeal rather than coming up with great tracks. YG during that period of time understood how great music is much more important than visuals.
2NE1 may also be known due to their high energy songs like IATB, Fire, Crush but they also have all types of songs about different experiences and they are all bops - Ugly, Lonely, I love you, Missing you, Good girl, If I were you, Come back home, CL's Hello Bitches and MTBD, etc.. their songs have real replayability. SNSD songs are only hot for a certain period. I still love Run Devil Run though just like I still enjoy a few Suju and SHINee songs.. a few.. I only started really liking SM stuff when NCT came along and Taemin went solo. I thought NCT was pretty much like a combination of EXO and BIGBANG in appeal and SM was right in getting ideas from YG and YG also learned from SM by combining SNSD and 2NE1 style with BP.

@@arien_000 I definitely agree with most of what you said. BP is both 2NE1 & SNSD, especially marketing. 2ne1 has a lot of vocal texture & replay ability whereas SNSDs songs are aimed for the time. But that’s also why SNSD is more nostalgic for most.
For example, their debut song ‘Into the New World’ gains popularity again when Koreans protest. And ‘Gee’, is a great song, but mainly nostalgic for the time.
SMs earlier artists & groups followed the direction of western pop like *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, Britney Spears etc. with some Jpop influence.
YGs early influences are most Black hip hop artists, TLC, Lil Kim, Justin Timberlake etc.
If you look at the music SM & YG samples from artists you can often see what direction they aimed for each era.
YG has always aimed to reach globally, it’s definitely their strength.
In terms of chemistry, I’d say this is where 2ne1 falls a little short. I think this is less to do about personality and more about age. It was speculated for years Minzy always seemed on a different page. There’s a 10 year difference between the oldest & youngest member which is kinda crazy. SNSD members are all within 3 years.
Bigbang: Weren’t supposed to be a group either. GDragon & Taeyang were originally a duo, then again solo. TOP, was an underground rapper. All until the company wanted to make an idol group because they were struggling with money. But they, like 2NE1, focuses mainly on production & the western market.
SNSDs downfall is being too visual dependent, so you made some great points. This is due to money & branding. Most of SNSDs catalog sold well because like you said, they’re SNSD. The group focuses heavily on getting lucrative brand deals & CFs. It’s how a lot of the members make & continue to make money since they are a large group & the company owns most of the royalties. The members weren’t allowed to write or produce music until much later on. They also have to maintain a youthful image visually & in music. This is a big contrast to Bigbang & 2NE1. G dragon gets a lot of royalties from co-producing a lot of their songs. It’s why he’s so rich. And CL co-produced most of their second album. They also have the freedom to explore maturer themes.

Comparing SNSD and 2NE1 is like comparing Apples and Tomatoes, both of which are fruits but they are not the same. SNSD became one of the great Iconic girl groups with its basis of great vocals and awesome choreography. Having 9 members shaped their development. 2NE1 Had great vocals but more subtle choreography. They had a broader range of music styles and excellent rapping. With 4 members they allowed individuality to show. Conclusion: Both great! Both were very important to the growth of female KPOP groups.

SNSD active over 15 years, 2ne1 active barely 7 years of their career but people in today world kinda love 2ne1 musics a lot than SNSD and I think without any controversy for 21 and SNSD back then, there’s already westerners that acknowledge 2ne1 will break in US market already

2NE1 was primarily made for the western market. 3 of 4 members are fluent in English. They were supposed to have an official joint album with Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas) which was heavily teased. Unfortunately it never came. This also explains why 2NE1 worked with western designers to break into Hollywood with fashion connections (Jeremy Scott) and why they were spotted at nightclubs to network with Djs. Blackpink of course continued the torch 2ne1 left behind
