Damn Santiago vocabulary sounds really good I’m shook for him being a gang leader and have a high level of vocabulary I got some hard time processing all that....
I’ve got to say , Santiago, the gang leader explained his side very well . That is the first time that I’ve heard someone from a gang make you understand the journey and reasons why they are in the position they are in today. I don’t condone violence and I also see that there is corruption on both sides . One , the government has authority and sees the gangs as a very dangerous a threat to their control. The gang sees the government as corrupt and instilling fear and creating more poverty. Such a vicious circle. Having numerous gangs all fighting for control seems the poor are ones more at risk .
His poing of the gang being the only way poor teens have to be organized and feel protected and supported kind of makes sense. But that's pure poetry from the gang leaders, it makes absolutely no sense when you realize they murder and dismember not just police, military (which to me is a declaration of war itself) and other gang members, but poor people like them for no reason: for initiation rituals, as gambles and as trophies. They are just blood thirsty psychos. Taking the army full power against them is the only solution, as the police is no longer able to fight them head on. While shootouts against police generally leave about one or two gang members wounded, shootouts with the army leave up to nine gang members with their heads blown up.
Tortilla is like bread, bread is too expensive compared to a tortilla, these people only have money to buy their daily "bread", glad it's funny to you.
They showed every identifying piece or that lady that they could. Her ear rings, the watch she wears, the color bag she has. They definitely did not conceal her identity at all.
Wow exelente trabajo agradezco su la labor y por mostrar a su audiencia la cruda realidad, una muestra de muchas de las cosas que pasan en este pais aqui ese el diario vivir.
no wonder Santiago is a leader of his gang, his understanding to the society is much larger than ordinary people. With some formal education, he can be a true leader to the society.
Great Documentary again by Mr Gold, he´s always going to the most dangerous places, i still get shivers when i remember his documentary about the conflict in the central african republic, when they were trapped and he and his team tried to get two kids that have been shot out of the dangerzone! Intense!
All these people judging the people of El Salvador. thining its a joke or they are lazy, or just ignorant, You know nothing! you were raised in a first world country, every thing is easy for u guys, go live in a third world country for just a week. nd then judge those people.
I'm truly amazed by the interviewed gang member leader. He actually makes exellent points about the gangs situation in El Salvador, he is well versed and well educated he makes a lot of sense, in my point of view and as far as I'm concern the Salvadorian police is just another legalized gang unit in uniform. Worse than MS 13 because they actually execute suspected gang members and they get away with murder.
The failure of mass media to cover how the American supported authoritarian government in El Salvador in the 1980s is a monumental information hole to most people observing this video, I would think. And to appreciate the significance of what this video is really portraying requires the knowledge that the American government provided diplomatic immunity, punitive support for and then deliberately downplayed the effects that were taking place against the people of El Salvador as a direct result. Without that information, conclusions derived from a limited context such as this video alone are doomed to inaccuracy. The video may look like it captures each side fairly (the fairness of this media coverage is not my point), a good understanding of their history will allow one to recognize the significance of the events described here. Just a few thoughts: 1) The gangs that originated here migrated to California, but then California extradited them here. This really just shows how much of the condition is so very Kafkaesque; the US sponsored the killings, and then got only a very small taste of what it sponsored back home. 2) The police in El Salvador have abandoned land territory in El Salvador for the gangs to reclaim. Now the gangs are wanting revenge for what was done to them. It kind of puts it into perspective, that the gangs are very pragmatic and not at all insane. Knowledge of the area's history helps one to escape popular opinion's attempt to simplify (and thereby dehumanize) the supposed bad gangs. The gangs arose out of fear and necessity to represent the poor, since it was the military forces supported by the American government that were suppressing them. 3) The Americans are just as stupid as always, helping sponsor a government that counter-intuitive in behavior that continues to this day (beating the little children playing soccer).
Kenneth Miller yep, the USA caused all of this, read about the El Salvador's civil war in the 1980's, the peasants were over throwing the salvadorian government to become a communist state, the USA quickly stepped in by pouring in $5 billion dollars to the corrupt salvadorean government to stop this, right now El Salvador would be a strict communist regime with rule of law but USA decided that this was not in the best interest of the USA, screw the peasants.
I am currently live in El Salvador, and is too damn dangerous, and all the governments profit from this problem. Thats why no one stopped. Right or left politics parties is the same shit. They love this corruption. Violence=Profit. The biggest arony of all time is that el salvador has been rated as the happiest country in latin america more than once.
How would the government profit from it? Lmao. You do know that if the country was more safe, El Salvador would have more tourism and foreigners. People would feel safe to be doing business. That means more taxes!
Joan Martinez the government and the interest they represent are the true source and reason why these murderous gangs and parasites have come into existence. However once these murderous gangs take root , it is very hard to rein them in by any other means besides force ( jail , injury , death ).
Glad this situation has changed for your country. Keep it strong El Salvador, don't surrender to the hypocrite "human rights not respected in prison" idea. Now it is possible to walk on the street, to let the kids play on the streets!

What i dont get is, as a gang member you shouldnt speak about what you do and how things get run. Escpecially if ur a gang leader youre more wanted so i dont get how he even agreed to do a interveiw of such or it can all be staged but idk its a really wierd one
It’s easy to identify that leader of 18 street just watch for a guy that excessively talks with his hands
Poor people of the El Salvador I thought Puerto Rico was bad but it's nothing compare to the abuse this people is going threw.....
+Dorian Grey Yea my mom is from Honduras. They're in a cartel war rite now and 1,000's are getting killed and it's considered the most dangerous country to be in at the moment
+Astroroth Demon isn't Syria and Iraq more dangerous now
Bhavana B Maybe but I am talking about dangerous as in deaths per day because literally hundreds are getting gunned down for wrong place wrong time stuff.
Oh,yes true Astroroth Demon
Juarez mx is probly as bad as that place
This is so sad I’m Salvadorian but I was born in CA but these people live in fear every second of there life and these poor mothers now I understand my father he was born in Salvador his mother and all his siblings so much suffering all over the world breaks my heart LORD HAVE MERCY ON US

Damn that gang leader was articulate and smart as hell
Now he can give his ground breaking speeches in CECOT...jajaja
"fear can hold you prisoner' the gangs use this in their favors :(
2020 anyone??
Damn Santiago vocabulary sounds really good I’m shook for him being a gang leader and have a high level of vocabulary I got some hard time processing all that....
Thank you for showing this Vice News.
my hearts go out to the families 💔😕
The video aged well. With the crack down in el salvador.
That gang member should be a politician. Speaks so much sense.
While shootouts against police generally leave about one or two gang members wounded, shootouts with the army leave up to nine gang members with their heads blown up.
been some time for a good documentary!!keep it up!!
YES Vice! The old you is back. My faith in alternative media is somewhat restored.
That Gang Member spoke more sense than Police did, Hope they Work out for Young Peoples sake..
Thanks for this.
very great video
The interviewer is an awesome dude
“1,2,3 la mara salvatrucha!” 😂😂😂that shit had me crack up, they sound like little middle schoolers 😂😂😂
Uriel Gomez That's because they often ARE middle schoolers...that's how fucked up it is.
These cops are the some of the bravest people on earth
The gangs are the least of the problems ThE Goverment in El Salvador is the real crook
The majority of the gang's of El Salvordor are in custody and should marry each other while in prison.
"When she left her home to buy tortillas" 😂 that stereotype left me weak
they are different types of tortillas Salvadorian tortillas and Mexican tortillas are very different
they are different types of tortillas Salvadorian tortillas and Mexican tortillas are verydiffernt
+Diego Trigueros i meant the stereotype that spanish speaking people eat food I associate with spanish speaking people
I mean that's what they eat
Tortilla is like bread, bread is too expensive compared to a tortilla, these people only have money to buy their daily "bread", glad it's funny to you.
Impresionado de la fluidez de palabra que tiene el tal Santiago
0:00 they got McDonald's
Duh
we got everything you can imagine
@@droidxtubc-3494 what about anime
This is so interesting.
They showed every identifying piece or that lady that they could. Her ear rings, the watch she wears, the color bag she has. They definitely did not conceal her identity at all.
My homegirl was just trying to buy tortillas wtf )):
That is the hood nobody is going see the video everyone is broke
Been to El Salvador 3 times, family on my fathers side. Scared to take my wife to see her country of origin for the first time. Makes me sad.
the fact that my parents called me a salvatrucha when I was little kinda makes it awkward knowing there's ms-13.
🤣
I burst out laughing at your comment! 😭 I needed this laugh!
Este man es super inteligente puñeta asi se habla mejor entrevesita que yo a visto en hace tiempo..
2023 the gangs about to die. Thanks Nayib Bukele
Wow exelente trabajo agradezco su la labor y por mostrar a su audiencia la cruda realidad, una muestra de muchas de las cosas que pasan en este pais aqui ese el diario vivir.
Here's a better idea.....why not lock the 13s and the 18s in the same cage and sit back and watch with some popcorn ???
Tay win they do in the US and nothing ever happends ..
Funny thing
We're actually gonna do it (i'm from El Salvador)
Laz3R KaT 115
they already did
Tay win
THEY ALREADY DID IT IN ELSALVADOR BUT NOTHING HAPPENS.........
@@YyYy-uh2sv its only a matter of time
Unless they get along and create a bigger gang
Idk
no wonder Santiago is a leader of his gang, his understanding to the society is much larger than ordinary people. With some formal education, he can be a true leader to the society.
The dude said they see them like "ALIENS" LMAO !
Seems things have changed a little.
El salvadore is much safer today. Over the last 3 years it's gotten much safer.
Great Documentary again by Mr Gold, he´s always going to the most dangerous places, i still get shivers when i remember his documentary about the conflict in the central african republic, when they were trapped and he and his team tried to get two kids that have been shot out of the dangerzone! Intense!
I would be so scared if I was the one who interview them lol
when is gonna be ready the 3rd part?
All these people judging the people of El Salvador. thining its a joke or they are lazy, or just ignorant, You know nothing! you were raised in a first world country, every thing is easy for u guys, go live in a third world country for just a week. nd then judge those people.
Part 3 please
I had so many good memories of my previous job, the chef and another cook is from salvador.
How was you so fucking calm talking to them holy shit I would’ve caught a heart attack and had a seizure right when I saw them
I'm truly amazed by the interviewed gang member leader. He actually makes exellent points about the gangs situation in El Salvador, he is well versed and well educated he makes a lot of sense, in my point of view and as far as I'm concern the Salvadorian police is just another legalized gang
unit in uniform. Worse than
MS 13 because they actually execute suspected gang members and they get away with murder.
Bukele is the best president of america
Just a few thoughts:
1) The gangs that originated here migrated to California, but then California extradited them here.
Yeah, the Reagan years weren't too good for central and South America. Actually, they weren't too good for US foreign policy in general.
Right, to their objectives, they were deliberate in not covering it. Good point
That gang leader was smart or just a good talker
13:39 “and it remains unsolved”
lol I just finished watching part one and part two get uploaded right away haha sweet!!!
gets*
8:22 she licks her finger and touches the bread -_-
Lol
new president made el salvador a safer place now...
The last guy has a very wise words.
+Ragnar you're salvadorian
Joan Martinez the government and the interest they represent are the true source and reason why these murderous gangs and parasites have come into existence. However once these murderous gangs take root , it is very hard to rein them in by any other means besides force ( jail , injury , death ).
Vice News still needs to bring back beyond the headlines
Glad this situation has changed for your country. Keep it strong El Salvador, don't surrender to the hypocrite "human rights not respected in prison" idea. Now it is possible to walk on the street, to let the kids play on the streets!
