I have been experimenting myself. Although I am new to cinema cameras and have struggled quite a bit. I really appreciate this video and it helped answer a lot of questions.
Thanks for this. I’m going to use XF AVC 10-bit long gop for all my internal 4K shooting now, except where I need something special for VFX. Beautiful footage. On the R6 mk ii I found 6K RAW to a Ninja V+ was the only stunning looking footage. The R5C is an entirely different beastie.
Thanks for putting this together! Quick question about XFAVC - are you able to preview the file thumbnails in Mac Finder, or do you have to import them into an NLE to even see them? 🤔
I believe it is 422 that cannot be viewed in less in NLE. I have the same problem on Windows. If I shoot a regular color profile and 10-bit sometimes I can preview the video. For the most part I have to rely on an NLE to review my footage from this camera. One of the most annoying things
I am currently debating the r5c vs the c70 as a B cam to my current C70. The r5c looks great, but how do you find it matches and cuts with the c70 footage?
I've found it cuts together flawlessly, but this is a great idea for a test. One downside to getting an R5C instead of another C70 is if you have a bunch of EF lenses that aren't full frame, but if you've got full-frame glass it's a great option.
@@brandnewextragood That ProGrade card is 4x more expensive than a CF Express Type B cards. They are also 5x slower too. No point in using them when there is a CF Express slot.
@@vitaminb4869 Great points. I like using SD cards for the most part because I can use them in all my cameras and don't need to worry about digging out my CF card reader. It's worth it to me for the workflow benefits, but the CF Express is a great option for the reasons you point out.
That external battery is the Core SWX Powerbase EDGE with LP-E6 dummy battery. I’ve been loving it so far (can record for hours without worrying at all) but I recommend doing your own research if you’re thinking about picking one up. Third party battery solutions can sometimes get you into trouble, although I’ve had no problems at all with this yet.
I went with the Long GOP codec because it’s a lot more efficient - I can record for much longer than an Intra codec and the quality difference is negligible in my opinion.
Yes I use it handheld. The digital image stabilization isn’t the best, but it’s no worse than any other mirrorless cameras I’ve used over the years - all of which suffer from the same problem of being very lightweight and therefore subject to micro-jitters.
@@brandnewextragood in crop modes you can shoot 6kRAW(Super 35) and 2.9kRAW(Super 16). You can shoot 2.9kRAW internal at 120fps without external power as well.
Fully agree. XFAVC LongGOP has never disappointed. Easy to work with files... looks fantastic. R5c matches to my C70's super easy.
I've found the R5C matches great with my C70 as well. Love the codecs Canon put in these cameras.
I find the C70 image is way softer and more noisy than the R5C.

Sounds like a good setup
Looks good on my phone. Nice job
I've opted for All-I over Long GOP. Long GOP is just a nightmare to edit with due to the processing needed to render the frames
Makes sense. All-I will technically give you better quality, too, but I can’t tell the difference in most cases.
Nice that 10 bit xfavc is available in wide DR and rec 709 etc profiles also
Definitely.
I have a question, does canon r5c record 8k60fps in normal mod or only for slow motion mod. For example, can I use 8k60fps as vlog camera?
Thanks for putting this together! Quick question about XFAVC - are you able to preview the file thumbnails in Mac Finder, or do you have to import them into an NLE to even see them? 🤔
Yep, you can preview them in Finder.
@@brandnewextragood That’s so weird - whenever I try to view them in Finder, it doesn’t show the thumbnails… 🤷🏻♂️
You might have to install Pro Video Formats from Apple to preview them natively.
@@brandnewextragood Oooh, thanks - I’ll check that out!

Look out Philip Bloom, Will is comin for ya
I am the answer to the question everyone is asking, “What if Philip Bloom had dogs instead of cats and didn’t know as much about cameras?”
Boy, some really nice footage there. What is the name of that last song in the video? Thanks.
Thanks! The song is Once Upon a Time by Maya Belsitzman and Matan Ephrat, licensed through ArtList.
wow, where did you find the canon lut? clog3 - bt709 etc? looks great! thank you! :D
If you go to the official support page for the R5C on Canon's website, go to Drivers & Downloads > Software > Canon lookup table Version 201911
@@brandnewextragood thank you! :D
Hello brother good video! How do I get the plate that connects To your V mount battery that attaches to the tripod?
You can attach any standard tripod plate to the battery. I use the one that came with my tripod head.
Thanks 😊

what memory cards do you use to film XFAVC LongGOP 10-bit?
I’ve found that the ProGrade V90 SD cards work great for the LongGOP codec.
