Memorable or not, Pacifica’s inclusion inspiring roughly four other Disney characters, to the point where it practically became it’s own trope, is pretty impressive. I can imagine her hearing this and flipping her hair back and saying “You still can’t beat the original”.
Also, the lumberjack’s story is really tragic the more you think about it. Untold numbers of people gave their lives to build the house, all on the promise that one day they’d get something in return, and the Northwest’s couldn’t even do that for them.

Whast works about Pacifica, for me, is how they don't overcomplicate her. As a bit character, she did pretty good. The writing was still witty and the voice actress was great. All in all she was just kinda funny and I enjoyed seeing her around. Enjoyed seeing her do small petty things. The blatant parody of her arch-type. The way the other characters reacted to her very presence. And her rivalry with Mabel.
Then we started getting more to her. And at first I was skeptical. But she weirdly enough played off very well against Dipper and Mabel. I think it helps that she's one of the few reoccurring characters actually the same age as the twins who wasn't just one of Mabel's lackies.
You started to feel bad for her, the but the show didn't beat you over the head with it until the Northwest Mansion episode. And by that point it felt earned. And still never "too much". The show never wanted you to stop having a good time. I wish we got more from her. And yes, I think her relationship with Dipper was cute and I wanted more!

I personally enjoyed Pacifica Northwest. As an antagonist, Pacifica was a good foil to Mabel, and was meant to be the foil for Mabel. Pacifica actually made Mabel feel bad about being herself, made fun of Mabel's friends and family, sometimes one ups Mabel through potentially underhanded means, and actually showed signs of being jealous of Mabel despite being richer and more popular than her. Pacifica Northwest just wasn't a good person during season 1, yet she was popular among the fans of Gravity Falls. Season 2 was when Pacifica's character started to change. She started off the series as bad as usual, and was shown to be legitimately better than Mabel at mini-golf, something Mabel was legitimately good at herself. This was ultimately the last straw for Mabel after dealing with Pacifica ruining things for her the whole summer. Mabel and Pacifica's rivalry definitely reached a boiling point during the mini-golf episode, but as much as Mabel wanted to defeat Pacifica, even by resorting to cheating, when Pacifica's life was in danger, Mabel decided to be the better person and try to save her. Mabel even ended their rivalry at the end of the episode, to an extent anyway. The pines family and Soos giving Pacifica a ride home definitely seemed to soften her up a bit, to the point where she somewhat admitted that she had fun with Mabel. Pacifica even accepted and wore Mabel's apology sticker. Mabel was right to say that she and Pacifica made some progress, even if Dipper doesn't believe so. Ironically enough, it was Pacifica's relationship with Dipper that ultimately led to Pacifica's redemption. Dipper disliked Pacifica mainly because of how she poorly treated Mabel, but the incident at Northwest manor changed all of that. We started to see that Pacifica's behavior was due to her parents during the mini-golf episode, and it becomes more apparent during the Northwest manor incident. Pacifica's forced to recruit Dipper to perform an exorcism on a ghost that cursed the Northwest family. Dipper only does it for Mabel, with Pacifica and Dipper not enjoying each other's company at first. They even make fun of each other. It's only when Dipper and Pacifica are attacked by what Dipper describes in journal 3 as a category 11 ghost from the Corduroy family, that Pacifica's insecurities start to come to light. Pacifica Northwest is shown under pressure by her parents to be the terrible person that she is. After Dipper and Pacifica actually catch the ghost together, Pacifica hugs Dipper without thinking about it. She actually tries to pay Dipper off to pretend that it never happened, but the seeds for their shipping have been planted. Pacifica actually tries being legitimately nice to Dipper, despite all the times before when she was rude to Mabel. Dipper even starts to believe that there is a better side to Pacifica, until he learns that the Northwest family knew that the curse was coming and used Dipper for their own personal gain. The disappointment and resentment that Dipper shows Pacifica actually makes her regret lying to Dipper and starts her on her path to being a better person than her family. Pacifica ultimately redeems herself by saving Dipper and the party guests from the ghost's curse, and shows how much better of a person she can be than her family. Sadly, she doesn't get much more development in the series, but her scenes in Weirdmageddon show that Pacifica is still a better person than her awful parents. She even showed up for Dipper and Mabel's birthday party, and signed her name on Dipper's "See You Next Summer" letter. Plus, Dipper may actually have developed feelings for Pacifica, due to the Northwest manor incident, a message he wrote in Journal 3 about Pacifica, and their adventure together in the graphic novel Gravity Falls Lost Legends. There's even a special secret message that shows that Pacifica actually misses the Pines twins after they left Gravity Falls. I personally liked how Pacifica Northwest became a better person by the end of the Gravity Falls series.

It's because when he agreed to be the government's stand-in for the Gravity Falls founder, they must've paid him boat loads of tax money as a "reward." It's moment's like this that make me happy Pacifica's family lost their fortune

The reason I love Pacifica is because she had no character development whatsoever.
I just think it's funny how stereotypical she is.
The difference between her, Amity, and Sasha, is that while she is important to the plot, she's not as important.
Amity is dating the main character. She's in nearly every episode.
Sasha was one of the major villains for a long time, until she finally joined the good side.
Pacifica? She was never really a main villain. Sure, she and Mabel were enemies, but was it really all that serious? She was still a jerk, though. Which is why she's awesome.

I’m pretty sure “Big Henry” is a John Henry reference. I recommend looking up his story for yourself (or watch the very good Disney animated short about him!), but his strength, stature, and interaction with Polly (which I think was John’s wife’s name) pretty much mirrors John Henry before he makes his ultimate sacrifice.

    • @SaiyanGamer95
      @SaiyanGamer95 2 года назад +9

      I had a feeling.
For a brief rundown of the plot, John Henry is a folktale about a man working as "steel-driving man", meaning that his job was to hammer steel drills into rocks to make holes for explosions (basically, making a deep enough hole to put explosives in to build railroad tunnels). One day, an inventor comes in with a steam-powered drilling machine, claiming this machine can do better than the men working, since it doesn't tire, need a break, and does its job harder and faster. John Henry challenges the inventor and the machine to a race to see who can make their way through a mountain. In the end, John Henry won, but died from the stress and exhaustion.
The Disney version changes it to driving steel into the sides of a railroad and the machine doing his and the other men's job better and faster with the race being who can drive more steel into their side of the railroad. John stops at a mountain, believe it to be the end, but the machine drills into the mountain. He's given a second hammer to match the machine. Eventually, the machine breaks apart while John reaches the other side before dying of exhaustion, holding both hammers in his hands.

Her story with Dipper in the Gravity Falls Lost Legends book really helps with continuing to grow her character. It also basically "canonizes" the ship between Dipper and Pacifica as well, with Mabel asking Pacifica if she likes Dipper, and when the wedding is.
The story also gives a bit more insight into Pacifica's childhood with her parents, and how obsessed with looks they all are. It surprisingly does a lot with furthering Pacifica as a character, so I'd suggest reading it to anyone interested on seeing more of her.

I think the point of the mini golf episode was that even though Mabel had every reason to hate Pacifica, her decision to be nicer to her and call off the rivalry helped start to change Pacifica’s mind. To me, the theme was always that kindness breeds kindness eventually, not that rivalries are dumb or that you’re not allowed to feel negative feelings towards someone who is really mean to you.

I have a theory as to why the, (usually) blonde bully who gets redeemed, is so popular now (and imo have been for a long time).
It's because it's easy and simple.
Redemption it a hard thing to get right most of the time. So if you have a ready-made redemption arc it's all much more simple.

You make a good point about this character trope becoming a bit too common lately. I especially think that applies to the most recent iteration in Andrea from Ghost & Molly Mcgee, who’s the first I might go so far as to call a “Pacifica clone”, but all the others I think have enough to properly distinguish themselves from the original.
Also I appreciate it as an effective way to demonstrate that kids aren’t born with these kinds of personalities/traits, but they have to be taught/ raised into them.

I would say Courtney Gripling and, moreso, Miranda Killgallen from 'As Told By Ginger' predates Pacifica's character type. Courtney's more the unaware super-rich type, and Miranda likes to rub it in everyone's faces; Pacifica is something of a mix between these characters, I think.

The thing about characters like Pacifica (though my first example was Diamond Tiara from MLP) is that having a sad backstory and a bad living situation doesn't justify being a shitty person. If you're a shitty person, you're a shitty person, period; Get better. And while people often do have boohoo crybaby backstories, that doesn't change anything. Everyone has their own struggles; Soos didn't have a great home life but he still turned out to be a great person. Seeing a bad person grow is good, but trying to tug at our heart strings and make us feel bad for them doesn't work.
*I* came from an abusive household, and I rose above it, never becoming what my parents wanted me to be, or becoming someone like them. I'm not special, I'm honestly a lesser weaker person than most, so if I can do it anyone else can, and if they can't that's a character flaw of theirs, not a reason to feel bad for them.

It's a cycle that is toxic for them moving forward and toxic for everyone around them so everyone reading this, DON'T TAKE CRAP FROM BULLIES, IGNORING YOUR PROBLEMS WITH THEM ONLY ALLOWS THE PROBLEM TO CONTINUE.

Sunsets are characters that start as villains, and after redemption, still retain some of their negative qualities, used for good now. Examples: Sunset Shimmer, Starlight Glimmer, Sasha Waybright, Tom Lucitor, Amity Blight, Carswell Throne, Mary Crawly, Kitty Cheshire, Cleo de Nile, nearly every show has one. And Sunsets are almost always my favorite characters.
