Fair was the blossom, and faithful and true But fairer the tree from which it grew For Manticore's flower our grief is displayed For Honor has fallen to Haven's red blade. For Manticore's navy and Grayson's she flew; Fearless her ship and devoted her crew. Through terrible odds her commitment was keen To keep to her word and to honor her Queen. I will remember till memory dies Grayson's deep anger ablaze in her eyes As she challenged Burdette in the whole council's sight "Send for your sword and may God aid the right." I'm drawn to a standard I cannot attain My beacon a Lady, a Knight without stain, You cannot in honor, deny me this grace The chance to avenge what I cannot replace. I mourn for her loss but I know very well The tree is no less for the flower that fell. Someday I hope they'll remember of me, Fair was the blossom, but fairer the tree.
It occurs to me after re-reading Ashes of Victory (in particular, chapter 22) that the fourth verse of this is almost certainly intended as Abigail Hearns demanding that her father, Steadholder Owens, allow her to join the GSN after the PRH "executed" Honor, her childhood idol: "Owens had been no more proof against Grayson's planetary grief and outrage than anyone else, and his daughter, even more impassioned over it than he, had caught him at exactly the right moment and demanded the right to help avenge Lady Harrington's murder." I think the fact that fact that the man's voice is absent in that verse confirms this.
@@joshuazelinsky5213 March 2000 for the book, and May 2001 for the album. Of course, they may have performed the song earlier, but the timelines seem to match up to me.
@@reddir I think it's mostly from the remembrance ceremony at her funeral. First is the Protector or Reverend Sullivan, the second then Captain Yu or High Admiral Matthews, the third Steadholder Owens himself, then it ends with Abigail talking to him after the ceremony.
My favorite part used to be the end of verse 4. Now it is the end of verse 3, as I realize how thoroughly she must have opened herself to the Graysons' culture and way of life to call upon it at this moment, and just how horrid she found Burdette and the killers to be and, and how she had zero doubt that they could possibly be in God's favor.

I've got that and the older version of this song memorized. Fair was the blossom, and faithful and true But fairer the tree from which it grew For the fair flower our sorrow is sealed For Marin has fallen on Shadowdale Field. Her standard was honor, and proudly it flew; Courage her steed, and sharp justice she drew. Under it all the straight path that she trod Was the truth of her word and the love of her god. I will remember 'till memory dies Torm's love, and his anger, ablaze in her eyes As sunlight's recalled in a lone candle's flame, Her glory reflected His light and His name. I'm drawn to a standard I cannot attain, My beacon a lady, an knight without stain, As a gypsy may journey, fearless and far Her map the night heavens, her guidepost a star. I mourn for her loss, but I know very well The tree is no less for the flower that fell. Someday I hope they'll remember of me, Fair was the blossom, but fairer the tree.
MichalSoukup1995 Still, it's a beautiful song and she is indeed a very fair blossom and a brave Navel Princess. Lady Harrington is a big inspiration to me.
Lisa Llorens To me as well, Id love to serve under hers command, even if it would, mean to face certian death, because, when she fight to the last man she does so for the good reason.
+MichalSoukup1995 Hi Michal I would love to srve under her command! I wouldn't even mind dieing in the process. I would completely trust Honor. She's my best friend.
The song is lovely; running through all the covers like that made me think about them. Due to some confusion in Christmas presents, I have two copies of Honor of the Queen. One with the old '90s cover, one with the newer CGI-looking covers. I have to say, I like the older one- it looks like someone did a serious attempt to display her at a tactical board. The more recent one is a generic picture of flying cars. By contrast, the new cover for Flag in Exile is much better than the old one...
@tehren99 To my ear, it's more like English folk music. There's some commonality and overlap between the two, but that kind of melody and the vocal harmonys used are more typical of English folk than Scottish or Irish folk music.

This is an amazing song... and to echo one of the top comments can you put up the other HHverse songs they did on the same CD? They were Riding A Tiger and No Quarter. I have seen the sheet music for both but lack the ability to play it on anything because I have no instruments and it's been a long time since Band Class.
@ARP7777777 Or, if you buy one hardcover, you get a disk with a whole heap of bean books, including the entire Honor Harrington, plus anthologies in the back - means you can get the lot for the price of one hardcover, plus it has a lot more authors that people who like Honor might also like...well worth it, i consider. then you just have to buy the new ones to get your honor-fix :)
To find all the Honor Harrington songs you need to go to the Baen free library at ghostwheel, click the Honorverse cd and then find Echo's Children. It's not a link as RUclips won't let me post one.
Frankly This is the only one of the three honorverse filk songs that sound good to me. Although the words are great, I just find the melodies to "No Quarter" and "Riding a Tiger" to be completely off.
"The word is Lady Harrington and no mercy!" - Admiral Judah Yanakov, Grayson Space Navy, Second Battle of Basilisk.
Keep calm and roll pods. :D

Nice, I missed this.
If so, the timing had to be very tight. Ashes of Victory was published in 2000 and this song came out that year also.
After listening a few more times, I think this whole song could be from her - each verse hits on themes deeply meaningful to Graysons.

"Fearless her ship and devoted her crew." this is a very Aubrey/"Surprise is on our side" statement.

They did one called No Quarter that I'm aware of. I think it's available on the Virtual Filksing.
It is on RUclips.

Send for your sword and may God aid the right has got to be one of the most badass things I've ever read.
@ARP7777777
There's a grayson battle song named No Quarter and a Haven protest song named Riding a Tiger.
Oh, and also "Riding a Tiger"

This is an amazing song... and to echo one of the top comments can you put up the other HHverse songs they did on the same CD?
They were Riding A Tiger and No Quarter. I have seen the sheet music for both but lack the ability to play it on anything because I have no instruments and it's been a long time since Band Class.
The problem I have with No Quarter is that that is not what he said, but I can live with that.
No Quarter is floating around. I have seen/heard it recently on YT. As to Riding a Tiger, I would have to dig up the CD
