Good stuff! I sold all of my RF glass a while back and have just been using EF lenses on the speed booster. Its hard to get away from just how good this sensor is.
I love the sensor, too, though I'm finding myself going in kind of the opposite direction from you, Jesse: I'm in the process of selling off most of my EF lenses and replacing them with a few RF lenses and some third-party manual lenses. The RF lenses are so superior to me. In some cases, they make the EF versions look shabby IME. Case in point: We recently got the RF 24-70 f/2.8, and it just trashes the EF 24-70 ii f/2.8, which we've had for years. I can't even imagine putting the EF version back on a camera now.
@@theothermarkwilliams I didn't plan on going this route actually! I was in the process of switching entirely over to Sony. I had dumped all my RF stuff but was renting out the C70 to a few friends for a few months. Once I got it back I forgot just how much more I like the image out of it than the FX3 but all I had left were a few EF lenses.
So best budget set will be 18-35 f/1.8 and Tokina 11-20 f.2,8. Most versatail will be 24-105 f/4 + speedbooster. Probably the best 15-35 F/2.8 + 28-70 f/2.8 and something for ultra wide
Right now I am shooting with the Sony FX30. Which I am really impressed with. But, for my choice of where I am going to level up I am looking at the C70. So, I am watching a lot of C70 content in the meantime. Thanks for this video. I am bookmarking it for when I grab the C70.
One thing I believe should be said. If you're considering the Canon EF 24-105 L f/4 lens (mentioned in the video), it is only version 2 (ii) of that lens that provides image stabilization with the C70.
So I ended buying the Meike VND adaptor based on your recommendation. Then like 2 days later I had a Canon 16-35 2.8 mki pretty much fall into my lap. I got the 16-35 for $400. I wasn’t sure about going with such an old EF lens, but it’s kind of a nice combo with the Meike! The IS in the R7 and the C70 are kind of getting the job done for the lack of IS on the lens. I’m looking forward to seeing some results beyond just doing test shots around the house.
this is a very on time video, as I have been looking to expand my lens kit and cater more towards what I need from the c70. Right now using EF glass with the speedbooster from metabones. I hardly hear anyone talk about that one and I havent had any color shift issues, and I dont see a ton of flaring. Great video though, I agree that its a beneficial struggle, since the C70 is such a flexible camera. As of now I think Ill probably stick with sigma glass to get the most bang for buck, or until I have enough projects that require me to invest in cinema glass.
Good stuff Josh! I owned the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/1.8 Lens a while back when I was shooting weddings and had two cameras on me and it really is awesome glass. As Dave was saying sharp as L glass, but not all the other bells and whistles... I also still own the EF 24-105mm f/4 OSS Lens which is still a fantastic beast. There are so many options out there via adapters these days, but I'm sure Canon will also be adding lots of native RF glass sooner than later ;) It's really nice to see the various solutions and options out there depending on your needs 👊
Josh, your timing with this one is like just perfect for me as I'm still working out what to get. I've got the RF 35mm 1.8 on the way (as per your recommendation in another one of your vids). Mmm so many selections to choose from. Thanks again for doing this. I'm writing this after only watching for 90 seconds. I'd better get back to the video!
I'm using a combination of RF and EF on the Komodo. The RF glass is definitely better in every way, but yeah, the price tag is like buying cine lenses. The three RF lenses I currently own are the 50mm 1.2, 15-35 2.8, and the big boy 28-70 f2. I feel very covered with just those 3, but like you I would like a wider prime option. A well corrected 12mm with AF would be sweet.
Im reviewing the Meike Mini RF s35 lenses as we speak. Definitely something worth considering, so cheap and so good for the price! Also very small for cine lenses.
Yeah it’s something unique to the C70, but I’m not sure what causes it. I have heard from other people too that there isn’t any of those flaring issues with the Canon speedbooster on the Komodo. So weird that it only has issues on the camera it was designed for.
@@Josh_Sattin I shot into direct sun a few weeks ago with the Canon Speedbooster and a 24-105 mark 1 and couldn't see any purple dot. I'll have a look back at the raw and report back.
I need to see more tests with he speedbooster and washed out look with bad flares and purple tinge. Had no idea. Can really needs to allow third parties to create Rf lenses. Sure the Rf lenses hold value but they better because they're $2k+
Although I cannot justify buying a C70 for the work I do, this is definitely helpful info for the R7 I pre ordered to go along with my R6. I'm mentally preparing for the 1.6x crop and a little excited to try my 15-35 rf and 24-70 rf on the new R7 with its crop. Closest I will get to super 35 without spending the extra money.
I personally was not a big fan of the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art lens on the C70, as I was still getting too much vignetting on super 35mm mode. I already had the Sigma 18-35 paired to my GH5 with a Metabones 0.64 Ultra which did not vignette in video mode on the GH5, so it was free for me to try on the C70. I went with a Sigma 24-70 F2.8 DG for the C70. It hasn't been off the camera since, other than to put the 70-200 F2.8 II L for shits and giggles.
Am i the only one feeling that the colour reproduction in the 24-70 RF is just really great? I’m not exactly sure I’m right but I have this feeling that there is just so much more of a powerful saturation in the images than with EF lenses. Again I could be wrong, but maybe others can chip in with their experience.
Surprised he Sigma 18-35 1.8 didn't make an appearance. It rarely leaves my C200 and when I finally pick up a C70 it'll probably live on there as well.
Hi Jon, 12 months on with my C70 I just have not had the purple haze/dot issue you and others have mentioned with the Canon Speedbooster. I wonder if it was just some batches of c70s that had that issue?
I'm finding it hard to pic a good lens for my R7 for video. My first thought it sigma 18-35, I already have a tamron 17-50 2.8 but I'm missing some Bokeh and low light. I thought about the Canon 24 1.8 IS, seems reasonable for a light prime. If sigma can get their 23mm 1.4 on RF mount that would be great
Great video Josh! Slight deviation from the focus of this video. I have ordered r5c and looking at lens options. planning to use my current xt4 as a B cam. Flog and clog (clog 3) - how easy is it to match footage from Canon and fuji?
Thanks! I have not tried to match those two cameras. I would assume it would take quite a bit of work. It's much easier to match two cameras that are the same brand with the same log profile.
Hi, I think I see in one of your shots the Sennheiser AVX receiver mounted to your C70? Can you explain how you make this work with miniXLR and mounting? I have the AVX and may rent the C70 if I can make audio work.
The AVX comes with a piece of hardware to mount it to a cold shoe. The piece is round and wraps around the AVX receiver and has a cold shoe. Then I use this cable: geni.us/kVKsg
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks Josh, I've never used that piece and totally forgot about it. I can't see in the video, but I assume then you're using some type of top plate since you've also got your mic mounted on there. Great little rig.
