Excellent video. Two months ago, I was on 2000 miles trip with my model y. Phantom breaking happened 3 times with no apparent reason. I had to slam the accelerator to avoid collision with cars/truck behind me. This essentially happened when the speed is above 75mph and it is very SCARY. Especially when driving with 6 month pregnant woman. I am big Tesla fan but this not acceptable. This is not a deal breaker as there's a work around but they need to fix this issue though. Going forward, I will be using the "road trip" profile. Simple cruise control feature should be available.

Very nice video. I totally agree that this phantom breaking is a problem that needs to be fixed. I just got through my first 250 mile road trip to Wisconsin and back to Iowa. I had many phantom breaking events coming home. Many were on Wisconsin two lane roads coming up to a top of a hill but there were others in cruise control that I cannot explain what caused it. Thank you for the tip on Road Trip Profile.

I snapped out of my Tesla obsession after i bought one. It's one thing to be driving by myself and getting phantom breaking and almost being hit by thr car behind me, it's another when the wife and kids are out shopping and getting paranoid that someone is going to hit them. We're at the point that we're all scared to even drive it. Extremely dangerous car for a family. Luckily we do have a Toyota Pathfinder that isn't trying to kill us every 20 minutes. The Tesla is gone after lease is up.

Hi Spoken Reviews, I've completed a 6 hours drive in Eastern Canada and I can assure you the heat is not the problem. I believe the apps and/or the HW is not ready. With your video of four months and the older ones, I will report it only to Tesla, but Canadian Auto club Association (CAA) and Transport Canada. As pilot and Civilian Search and Rescue, it remind me of what Boeing had done two years ago.

Thanks for explaining how to report these to tesla. Had to do it 3 times in 100 miles today. I think mirages on hot, sunny days makes it worse. I had 24 PB incidents driving I-94 through Montana a few days ago. Hot, cloudless, sunny day, straight highway, no cars or trucks anywhere near me. I noticed it happened regularly cresting hills too, no mirages in sight. It's seriously frustrating. As for hovering your foot, I just rest my right foot on the throttle pedal so I can immediately push it. It's become such an instinctive reflex, my car has turned me into Pavlov's dog: car slams on brakes, I slam pedal, ffs. I guess fearing for your life will make you develop a new reflex REAL fast. Next time I'm a passenger in someone else's car and they brake suddenly, I'll probably stomp a hole in their passenger side floor board , lol. Thank you for posting these videos.

NO, it is not alot.... Rented a 2023 M3 from Hertz last week. On a trip down I-70 Kansas to Colorado, first time driving a Tesla, 20+ brake slams in one day! Rough roads, smooth roads, nothing in sight. No tumbleweeds, shadows from overpasses, nothing. 75 to 40 mph in two seconds. I had read about phantom braking before, just didn't know it was so common or what to do when it happens. Hertz, in my view is negligent to not even mention it to its customers. I will continue to just rent and not own until this issue is resolved. And for those that claim it never happens to them, they better carry fresh panties in the glove box just in case!

I got a model 3 2022 in end of March. The phantom breaking is so bad I don't even use cruise control or auto pilot anymore. It totally scares me to be honest. Almost daily it would do a phantom breaking. Love the car otherwise, but I'm going to have to trade it in and get something else. I'm just scared to drive it. It's not bad without cruise control or auto pilot, but I drive sometimes a lot to get to work and other places and I really need cruise control for longer trips.

I don’t own a Tesla - yet. I rented one for a 3 week trip from Dallas to Denver to Silverthorne to Albuquerque. I experienced numerous occasions of phantom braking. As you said, it is unnerving, and greatly diminishes the joy you expect from a roadtrip in an expensive car. Side note: At a party recently, I was talking to a loyal 4-year Tesla owner. I mentioned the phantom braking, and you would have thought that I had questioned the honor of his wife. He didn’t speak to me again the rest of the evening!!! LOL

I have 2019 model 3 and took a trip yesterday and had 3 phantom breaking incidents in less than 30 minutes. It unnerved my wife to the point I had to turn off FSD.
On a separate note, driving down the highway where I have 2 lanes, the auto pilot keeps switching lanes and riding in the passing lane for no apparent reason. I am not sure why it is doing this. I don’t see this behavior in the FSD videos.
Also, while In town on FSD It made a left turn and the car didn’t slow down at all probably going 35 MPH on a 90 degree turn. My Cell phone was in my cup holder and it went flying across the passenger seat and fell between the seat and passenger door.
I love my Tesla and am pulling for the FSD team but I have not seen a ton of progress in the FSD updates I have received.
I will try the suggestion in the video about toggling off the auto braking etc. to limit phantom breaking.
Thanks for the video and keep them coming!

My husband and I just finished a road trip in our model Y from Southern California to SLC, Utah. We had 5 PB's. 1 of them was fast and hard. It was pretty scary as Utah has 80MPH speed limit so we went from 80 to about 40 within half a second. Luckily no one was behind us nor were there any "hills" in the road. It happens when there is no ONE around. It's never happens in traffic (luckily). Makes me scared to use the cruise control. All updates are completed so it's not the software. People have suggested turning off safety features but that's half the reason I bought the car!! Don't bother calling Tesla they don't give a flying fluck the car is unsafe.

Commenting for a data point. I'm 1 month in owning a new 2022 MYLR, software 2022.36.6, 1500 miles. Autopilot used about 60% of the time. I have not had a phantom braking event occur yet, but I found this video while researching these events because I'm a little nervous for my first one to occur. When my experience does change, I'll try to remember to update this comment with milage, software, etc.

I just got a '22 model 3 LR last week, and I've had two phantom braking today. The first was a cool morning, no direct sunlight, 8 lane freeway, few cars, and as i passed a semi on my right the car braked suddenly. Then again on my way home, as i passed a pickup on my right, car braked again. By the way, I bought the monthly $200 FSD, but I can't use it bacause my safety score is too low, but I was still charged the $200. I'm starting to feel buyers remorse.

It's really strange. I would assume that a major interstate or highway would have enough data on it to prevent the phantom braking. Please log the error with your car when it happens.

We have the same problem. I called Tesla yesterday and the response from Tyler was simply, they cannot fix what is not broken! I then replied , If someone was in back of me and it phantom braked, then there would be an accident. His reply was " your Tesla would automatically speed up before the impact!" Now I was just thinking about a vehicle in front of me....... I have confidence in Tesla and and sure it will be fixed. Not so sure of Tyler though.

I agree with everything you say. Just completed a 1500 mile round trip from DFW to Colo Spgs and had PB experience a minimum of 18 times. So frustrating. Most of the time, it only affected me but three times there were cars behind me and the PB was quick, hard and long (from 72 to 30) and I finally figured out that I needed to either tap brake to disengage auto-pilot and mash the accelerator. I then started leaving my foot lightly on the accelerator in the ready position to try to counter the braking. I must say, this is not a fun or safe way to drive. I also resorted to disengaging auto-pilot whenever i saw a car coming up behind me, as I was so afraid of causing an accident, not to mention feeling the embarrassed having people behind me think i am a terrible driver!
When I got home, I scheduled a service appointment only to be contacted by message that the appointment was cancelled due to them stating that they did not find anything wrong with the vehicle ( I assume, someone or something can run a report and make this determination remotely??)
I am concerned about the overall safety of this and what I now, disappointingly, believe is half-3/4 baked technology as I have always been a Tesla fan.
I also agree with your statement regarding different situations where you experienced PB such as possible mirages, cresting hills, etc but without being consistent to come to a solid conclusion. FRUSTRATING.
I also went into autopilot and changed some settings that I thought would provide just a “cruise control” experience, but did not help in my trip.
Thanks again for your post and to the other people responding as it feels a bit comforting to know I am not crazy. My grandfather always said that misery loves company.

I also wanted to add the fact that the trip did impress me with regards to routing. Took me the exact way that I have taken for the past 30 years. Tesla supercharger locations were very convenient. Always between 10 - 25 minute stops and never had to wait for a spot. One stop did place me at a Sonic drive in, but sadly did not provide restroom facilities. Yes, it did add about 40 minutes overall to the trip than normal, but very acceptable. Time to stop and smell the roses so to speak.

Maybe not the same cause but every time I pass by this one exit my MYP will pick up the “Ramp 35mph” sign and start braking from 75 to 35! Very annoying and it’s only that one exit. I also have phantom braking in the city when it picks up the car in the left turn lane. It shows that there are many factors triggering this. I made a 3300 mile road trip last week from OKC to the Canadian border in Montana and back. I had numerous phantom braking incidents, however, three or four incidents could've had major issues. For example, I was traveling at 74 mph with cruise control on, and was abruptly slowed to 52 mph. Fortunately, I was on a four lane highway, and did not have a vehicle close enough to cause an accident. One gentlemen I met along the way said that Tesla planned to correct the issue with its next beta. Is that correct?

Glare/shadows etc on the glass I think causes the confusion since it is camera based. You can only temporary disable the emergency braking, it keeps turning it back on. You can't disable it and leave it off. This is dangerous. I have been on the receiving end of the brake check by a Tesla. I am afraid to be behind a Tesla now.
