  • After months, we think we solved the mystery of the Tesla Phantom Braking problem that started after an over the air update.
In our previous video, • Tesla Phantom Braking ... , we dive in to the mystery of the possible reasons many models of Tesla started to Phantom Brake when there were no issues before. After noticing it Phantom Braking at the same spot on the highway everyday, we had our clue.

I get phantom braking events on wide open roads with no traffic around. Overpasses do not seem to affect the phantom braking events for me.

Interesting, but I experienced phantom braking on a two lane road that had no overpasses. There was a slight dip in the road about a mile ahead, but nothing like an overpass or sign. It happened using Autopilot and again later even with FSD. I finally gave up and traded the car away as it exhibited other crazy stuff in other driving conditions. The systems also don't work when the camera lenses are obscured by road slurry (it snows where I live which is not sunny California). I may go back to a Tesla if they ever get ready for prime time but the experiment is over for now.

There maybe other things causing phantom breaking but the overpass at a certain angle is definitely a repeatable and predictable cause for phantom breaking that we found.

Overpass likely a cause. But I just experienced phantom braking while using cruise control on a stretch of highway with no traffic & no overpasses around.
The first time it happened there was splotch of some sort on the road - like paint was spilled.
Multiple subsequent times there was nothing obvious to cause the braking.
Tesla needs to address this asap.

I don’t have it in autopilot and it still auto brakes, for seemingly no reason. Super scary!

Great analysis of the phantom breaking. I encountered same issue. In addition, I drive hwy 5 between Sacramento and LA and what I noticed is when there is a glare from another vehicle from bumper or windshield the phantom breaking clicks in. While driving, when a glare is reflected in my eyes the car sees it as well and breaks. I have gotten use to these glitches and prepare to release autopilot when it happens. I reset set within a minute and continue the trip… on autopilot. Autopilot does not release the driver from being in control so prepare for the unseen. I don’t like it but I do feel it will be resolved and we can go on loving our Trslas.

I agree with your assessment here as one of multiple reasons for phantom breaking. I also think phantom breaking occurs due to the mirage effect on certain areas of road, hence why you really only get it during the day. I live in the desert, and at night, this one area of the highway, no issues with FSD. During a bright sunny day, the right combination of light, road reflection, heat, and road elevation changes, I hypothesize also triggers phantom breaking. It thinks the mirage is an object and it’s doing what it’s programmed to do, and that is stop. I feel like Tesla needs to combine radar and Tesla vision and only break when both those systems agree with one another. I feel like relying on ONLY one or the other is where issues arise. Solid content. Thank you.

100% I experienced the same phantom braking on hot summer days when road surface heat reflection (mirage) occurs. TACC adaptive cruise control is useless on hot summer days when mirage occurs. During a summer road trip from Dallas to Yellowstone, WY last year, phantom braking occurred driving out of Texas and NM. Further north, when it cooled off and was somewhat overcast, I no longer had the problem. When I returned home, the phantom braking resumed again in Raton, NM and the Texas Panhandle. Every time phantom braking happened, there was always road surface heat reflection present. Always.

On a recent highway trip I noticed 2 phantom braking issues on my new Model S and they were both in proximity of an 18-Wheeler truck! An overpass was not involved but certainly those big trucks cast a huge shadow and could be part of the problem. Cheers

I faced the same issue and thats why i always have my foot on the gas. In norway roads are narrow and trucks passes very closely. I saw it on the screen it shows truck as red object with the risk of collision and

That's interesting but I find the braking happens completely randomly even on open motorways. The only time I have consistently noticed it is when passing a truck. It is so bad I don't use the autopilot now and I certyainly would never pay for the full autopilot because I can;t be sure it will behave as I need it to behave. I'll look at BYD when they get going.

Yes, I have experienced the phantom braking issue with my 2023 Telse Model 3 Long Range on almost every trip I take on the feeway using Autopilot's cruise control. It's very annoying, and as one person below states, could be dangerous if there's someone following you too close. I read the Musk book recently and he's the one that prohibited the Tesla engineering from adding radar sensing to the camera sensing system.......he said no, the camera system is sufficient. Both systems working together would be the best fix.

Mine happens when I am in outside lane in UK on motorways. The car sees a hazard with the car on the inside lane where there is no risk. Sometimes it can be very aggressive and with a car following close behind it is dangerous and tbh not fit for purpose.

It wasn't the "vision system", this is pure conjecture. That crash happened because the car was relying on radar. The vision system *did* detect the truck, but didn't have permission to e-brake at the time.

If it was that easy, I would think Tesla would of fixed that problem. Looks like there are other situations listed by commenters where phantom braking happens in other non overpass situations.

    "And in this labyrinth
    Where night is blind
The Phantom of the Opera is there
    Inside your/my mind"
So that is probably the clue. Inside the mind of Autopilot there is sickness as yet undiagnosed and unfixed. When it will strike next no one knows.
Consider yourself lucky that this powerful and sudden braking hasn't killed a following motorcyclist...and drained all your resources in court. The legal system is unpredictable...and defending against lawsuits is expensive. Have your lawyer notify the manufacturer, NHTSA, in writing before shit hits the fan...or a car or motorcycle hits your rear bumper.

    Wrong.
Anyone in the software/computer vision industry understands why this is happening. Way more complicated than “thinks bridge is a truck”
