My GL1200 had stood for some years the Tank had Syrupy stale Fuel in it so I put 500 mls of Pure Acetone in the Tank Drained the Carbs and used the Bike's Electric Fuel Pump to fill the Carbs with Acetone the Carbs had the same Syrupy stale fuel in them so I had also drained them before adding the Acetone to the Tank I started the Engine on very low Throttle opening the Cylinders all chimed in after a minute of Running the Engine..so I added 50/50 Petrol and alloed it to Idle for 30 Minutes before adding new Petrol. the Acetone cleaned all the Jets as it ran through them ...all water content in the System was collected by the Acetone then it was burnt in the Engine. this procedure was carried out 24 Thousands miles ago.. the carbs were not dismantled at all..and I have not had to touch them since. the Acetone cleaned the Tank and inline Filters as it passed through N.B. when the Engine was Idling on the Acetone it had a smell of Burning Plastic from the Exhaust do not rev the Engine when burning Acetone as the Exhaust Valves will get way too hot due to the Higher Volatility of the Acetone. P.S. it is best to run the Engine outside in the open Air.....it will Stink until it is back running on Petrol!!
I got a good running gl1100 year 81. Belts and hoses are changed. Done normal maintenance on the bike. But I’m still a little w concerned taking it on a long trip. Should I be? Still has the thoughts “it’s an old bike” Love your videos! Greetings from Peter in Denmark. 😊
My GL1200 had stood for some years
the Tank had Syrupy stale Fuel in it so I put 500 mls of Pure Acetone in the Tank
Drained the Carbs and used the Bike's Electric Fuel Pump to fill the Carbs with Acetone
the Carbs had the same Syrupy stale fuel in them so I had also drained them before adding the Acetone to the Tank
I started the Engine on very low Throttle opening
the Cylinders all chimed in after a minute of Running the Engine..so I added 50/50 Petrol and alloed it to Idle for 30 Minutes before adding new Petrol.
the Acetone cleaned all the Jets as it ran through them ...all water content in the System was collected by the Acetone then it was burnt in the Engine.
this procedure was carried out 24 Thousands miles ago..
the carbs were not dismantled at all..and I have not had to touch them since.
the Acetone cleaned the Tank and inline Filters as it passed through
N.B. when the Engine was Idling on the Acetone it had a smell of Burning Plastic from the Exhaust
do not rev the Engine when burning Acetone as the Exhaust Valves will get way too hot due to the Higher Volatility of the Acetone.
