Aunque la Guerra del Peloponeso (431-404 a.C.) había demostrado la importancia de la infantería ligera y la caballería, Esparta todavía creía que la falange de hoplitas pesados era el arma estrella. Epaminondas, strategos de Tebas y futuro maestro de Filipo II de Macedonia, con un ejército menos numeroso encaró a los espartanos de un modo poco ortodoxo: en vez de distribuir a todos sus hombres en una línea uniforme con ocho filas en fondo como era lo tradicional, reforzó su flanco izquierdo (las derecha espartana) con un cuerpo de 50 filas en fondo, que en su empuje aplastó a las ocho filas espartanas en ese flanco mientras la más numerosa caballería tebana ponía en fuga a la espartana, formada principalmente por mercenarios tesalios. En la meleé siguiente, Cleombroto, uno de los dos reyes de Esparta y que como era tradicional dirigía al ejercito lacedemonio, fue muerto y esto desanimó a los espartanos cuyo flanco derecho se hundió por completo, haciendo que aquellos, que jamás retrocedían en un combate, se desanimaran y emprendieran la retirada. Habían sufrido diez veces más bajas que los tebanos. Este desastre significó el derrumbe del prestigio militar de Esparta, hasta entonces invencible, y el fin de su hegemonía sobre las otras polis. Con esta victoria Epaminondas no solo salvó a su ciudad si no que revolucionó el arte de la guerra en Grecia.

It's a little misleading to refer to the whole of Cleombrutos's army as 'Spartans' given there were only about 1000 actual spartiate hoplites in his host, the rest being comprised of hoplites from city states allied to Sparta.
They were representing Sparta so if he explained everything it will be one hour video and besides Sparta's downfall is that they were training elite warriors but numbers against elite will always prevail in that time

Cleómbroto murio era unos de los pocos espartitas que quedaban, pero antes de morir de rodilla asesino a varios tebanos y madesonios. lol
