- RGE20 locomotives are Quetta Gladiators, one of the good locomotives working at toughest Railway sections of the world,
watch detailed Review of RGE 20 locomotive Review and also all the information related to its working and specifications
on my recent visit of Quetta,Balochistan... I got chance to visit Quetta locomotive shed, there are 25 numbers of RGE20 locomotives are available and those locomotives work on different sections of Pakistan Railways, most if the working would be among sibi junction to Quetta junction through Bolan pas which is the highest level of Pakistan Railways(1793m) and the ruling grade is also very difficult and though, such as 1:25 and 1:40 up/down gradient, these B grade locomotives are working fine having 2000HP 7FDL12 General electric Diesel engine,
these locomotives were part of a rehabilitation of Alu20 locomotives (Alco) and Pakistan Railways did reverse engineering to ALCO locomotives and put GE 7FDL12 prime mover in it and restored then to work at ghat sections (up/down gradient)

Excellent video indeed!! I enjoyed it a lot.
I lived at Kolpur for three & a half years while my dear father was posted to this beautiful railway station as Asstt Way Inspector in NWR to maintain railway track from Mach to Spezand in 1960s. Then steam locomotives were used to haul the trains. I accompanied my father to enjoy trolley-rides in my childhood. Mach to Kolpur is the most difficult ghat section to maintain tracks on bridges, tunnels, curves etc. My father had to put in concerted efforts day & night to keep the tracks fit fot running. I still reminisce those good days.

So basically it's an alco locomotives that got modified into ge locomotive... Props to PR...it even has impressive gear ratio of 90/22=4.10..
I was shocked when I heard that rge20 was fitted with 7fdl-12 prime mover engine... It's the same prime mover that is fitted in geu20 also...

Yeah its reverse engineering done by PR at Pakistan locomotive factory Risalpur, and the performance of these locomotives are outstanding as far as the working sections of these locomotives, now it's about 19 years passed but these iron Horses are working good,

Nice video. Learnt a lot specially about the banking engines and how they coordinate. The other thing that seems to come out is that there is no shortage of knowledge or skill in the Pakistan Railways and their method of working is very similar to Indian railways, both being the offsprings of the British railway. BUT the poor financial situation and corruption in Pakistan for the last few decades has halted the progress of the railways (perhaps intentional due to conflict of economic interest within the corrupt politicians). The sad thing is that the continuing decline will lead to decline in skill and manpower knowledge gained before and after partition and that can not be replaced. Sad because there is such a thing as point of no return in knowledge base. Some years ago, British rail had to import Indian railway engineers to fix their signalling and other system because they had lost that knowledge base.

Were the GE engines new or reconditioned when they replaced the ALCO prime mover? Emergency brake handle is usually painted red to "stand out" in an emergency. Great production, thank you.

These RGE20 locomotives were initially ALU20(alco 2000HP, imported back in.70,s
Then Pakistan Railways decided to restore it and planned the reverse engineering of it,
In 2001,02 all 27 ALU20 locomotives were rehabilitated with new 7FDL12 prime movers and few other electric equipments,
Cab design was also changed and dynamic breaks was also introduced on it,
These locomotives were rehabilitated for UP/Down gradient sections of sibi to Quetta and Chaman, these sections have tough terrain such as, Bolan Pass and kojak Pass,Balochistan, Pakistan.
Ruling grade on these sections are 1:40 to 1:25,
From Aab e gum Railway Station to Kolpur Railway Station a banker locomotive would be attached with passenger trains of 10 coaches, but if the number of passengers or coaches would be increased then 2 banker locomotives would be attached,
Both or all three locomotives didn't work as multiple unit system rather the drivers of the locomotive,s work under the pre decided S.O.P of Pakistan Railways (work manually and communicate on wireless sets).
Only 1 passenger train is derailed on this section back in 2015, when it was coming from Kolpur Railway Station (1793m) towards Sibi Station and derailed near Aab e Gum Railway Station, a switch man tried to divert it on catch siding but its went overshoot,
