      Because EVs are so much torquier than ICE vehicles, and with lower centers of gravity, people already expect them to be comparatively sporty, and for the most part, they are.

      Rob L. Yeah i agree. The Renault Zoe, E-golf and Nissan Leaf for example arent especially «fast» altough some people expect them to be. The E-tron isnt slow but its not blistering fast either. I don’t like how people complain about a 2.5t vehicle that has 408 horsepower that goes from 0-100 km/h or 0-62 mp/h in 5.7s I mean what did you expect? Tesla performance? The E-Tron isnt made for speed, its made almost purely for practiality and luxury and thats what people dont understand.

    I just got a 2019 e-tron Prestige with 10k miles on it. This is after having a 2020 Model Y, which I traded for a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited AWD because the Model Y’s phantom braking in my case was insanely bad and dangerous. The Hyundai was very nice, but I got the 2nd hand e-tron for $2k more than I got for the Hyundai, and the Audi is just so much nicer to drive, more luxurious, etc, that it’s in a different league. No question the Ioniq 5 has a longer range by 50 miles, and fast charges far more quickly, but for folks who don’t do a lot of road trips, I would strongly encourage considering a 2nd hand e-tron.

    There was a press conference that Audi held prior to the release of this vehicle and one of their executives had mentioned that the regenerative braking is not as effective as preserving the forward momentum of the vehicle. In other words, it's more effiecient to let the vehicle coast, then it is to forcibly slow the car down via regenerative braking. Porsche is following a similar method with their Taycan.

      I test-drove one a couple of months ago - this thing is a barge. It is a very big car, and you don't even have to think twice about leg room in the back. Ditto for cargo space. In fact if there's anything that's holding me back and giving me doubts it is that this car may be too big. Trying to get out of the door in tight supermarket parking lots ... I've seen people desperately trying to park SUVs this size and having huge difficulties. (that's from a New Zealand point of view where we generally don't drive cars the size of American ones).

  • @ColinFox
    @ColinFox 4 года назад +5

    I really wish reviewers would stop throwing casual shade at Tesla -- "..the interior is miles ahead of anything Tesla provides..." without giving *any* specifics. Well, I own a Model S (2013) and I've driven an etron. I don't see anything "miles ahead" of what I have - I would call it "on par". They both have leather/high quality "vegan leather", aluminum, soft-touch plastics, etc etc. It's all the same stuff. Where is this "miles ahead"? I just don't see it.
    The emperor has no clothes, and the Audi is about the same (quality wise) as the Model S. The interior DESIGN is definitely different, and if the Audi aesthetic is what you want, that's fine -- I have no objection. But don't use the term "quality". That's just offensively false.
    [edit] Also - after driving it 120,000 kms over 6 years, it has never once got me stuck at the charger with the plug locked in. Also - Tesla supercharging fees are FAR lower than what you described here. So the Audi goes less distance for far more money, and may get you stuck at the charger. No thanks.

    • @smr32061
      @smr32061 4 года назад

      Of course, it's not perfect. But, price wise, it is still less expensive than a model X. It has a luxurious interior, is spacious and comfortable ride , and for many acceptable range. The charging issue mentioned is concerning if using that charging company and the cost is ridiculous, no argument there. That has to be fixed and is unacceptable. The whole idea is electric is supposed to be cheaper than using gasoline. I understand, as another commenter made, that it is a business and so, need to make a profit but they are taking advantage and charging a premium for speed and convenience. Fortunately, one does not need to always be using this option. Best thing will always be to charge your vehicle at home, every evening if needed. The thing is, does Audi,.on it's maps screen, indicate where public charging locations are like Tesla does, to alleviate range anxiety? When it comes to charging infrastructure, Tesla is still ahead of the pack. I have to say, I have been a passenger in an e-tron and was impressed with the ride, interior.and build quality.

My guess has to do with a variation on tragedy of the commons, but instead of other people its other sources of power draw. but I don't have evidence to back that.
    as for the E-tron. Not my thing, but I think audi did a good job with it. I'm guessing some Q5 shoppers will be very happy to give this thing a try, and probably be very happy with it. but that charge price, holy toledo, that needs to come down.

    E-Tron SUV was never meant to compete with Tesla, it was meant to ease the "average" luxury buyer into EV.
    Tesla buyers are being extremely deliberate when buying a Tesla.
    The luxury SUV buyer will spend $70k either way, ICE or EV, so the E-Tron is aimed at them.
    In other words, it is what they're already used to, just without gasoline.
    VW/Audi are playing the long game. Take what the buyer is already accustomed to, just remove petroleum from the equation in the most unobtrusive, non-threatening way possible.
    Tesla can hit those range and brutal speed numbers at the cost of some uneven lines and occasional panel gaps.

    In theory, EVs should suffer less when the proportion of highway driving is more, because they can very easily be made far more aerodynamically efficient than similarly sized ICE vehicles,their number 1 advantage in aero being that the wheels on most cars are a significant cause of drag, but they can't be smoothed off entirely because they have to allow for brake cooling (nicely largely [but not entirely] replaced by regen braking) and number 2 being that an ICE needs a LOT of air to go through its not very easy to smooth out engine compartment. Also, with mass being more of a factor in stop start driving, even the superior torque characteristics and regen do not make up for the fact that having to accelerate a large mass repeatedly takes more energy than maintaining a constant speed, the inverse square law (of aero resistance / speed) notwithstanding. Of course, all engineering is about choices. Audi could make this thing way more aero, but then it would have the accommodation of an Aptera. The point is that, for a given size and shape, it's easier to reduce drag with said EV, and therefore when the proportion of highway to city climbs, larger gains are to be found, when the proportion of city decreases, the disadvantage extra mass is somewhat reduced, especially when regen can be used to 'claw back' some of the extra energy used to repeatedly accelerate the extra mass

    With a crappy UI in Tesla cars, I’ll pass on that. Tesla fanboys want to take their iPad experience from the bedroom to their cars.... touching, sliding, squeezing, and making love to that damn touch screen! Not for me at any price. P.S. I’m writing this comment on my iPad.

      @@fpartidafpartida agree, it's incredible. FAR outclasses the Teslas.

    Audi is struggling giving these away. It is overpriced and weak for segment relative to range. Day late dollar short. Sad so sad. Stay away my friends. When I go electric, I go Tesla.

    But with that range, who gives a f**k about the interior? The range and charging network is pathetic.
