    Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on RUclips, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on RUclips. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on RUclips, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.

    Had the privilege of seeing U2 on the "Joshua Tree" tour, and it was an amazing scene. At the beginning of "Bullet The Blue Sky" an airliner flew RIGHT OVER JFK Stadium in Philly where the concert was being held, the same venue as the U.S. portion of Live Aid. It was packed, well over 100,000 people. Bruce Springsteen came out for the encore, and they sang "Stand By Me", insane and very emotional.

    U2’s “rooftop concert” got shutdown, but they got off one song before the cops pulled the plug. “Where The Streets Have No Name” official video shows that amazing scene, filmed in downtown LA.

      As much as I LOVE Queen and their performance - I do agree with that. I think U2 was talked about more in it's time. Their performances are very different - U2 has that spiritual aspect - and Queen is pure showmanship - which is great, and not a put down at all. They were truly the 2 best bands of the day.

    I first saw U2 in 1983 at the Palladium in NYC. He jumped off the stage, grabbed a girl, pulled her up on stage, and danced with her. He used to do that all the time! I’ve seen them many times over the years, they are always amazing in concert

    Made my day Shawn, thanks. Bono is known for riffing and adding parts of other artists' songs during his live shows. He opened the song referencing "Satellite of Love" by Lou Reed, then towards the end "Ruby Tuesday" and "Sympathy For The Devil" by The Rolling Stones and "Walk On The Wild Side" by Lou Reed. They were supposed to close with their recent hit 'Pride (In The Name of Love)", which is about Martin Luther King, but couldn't because Bono extended his performance and they ran out of time. The heat was brutal that day and they were using hoses to try to cool down the crowd but lots of people were still passing out, especially the ones in the front who were packed like sardines and getting crushed against the barricades. In a later interview the girl that he danced with said that he had saved her life by pointing her out to security, they gave her water and got her temperature down.

    ...check out the guy who is manning the mic stand, running it to Bono or grabbing it when he drops it. His name is Greg Carroll, he was a good friend of Bono's and a roadie for the band until he was killed in a motorcycle accident. Bono wrote ONE TREE HILL, a beautiful song, in his memory. One Tree Hill is a very important place in Auckland, New Zealand, where Carroll was from. Definitely worth checking out (It gets me emotional). Here's a great live version from Auckland, he dedicated this performance to miners who had died in a recent accident, one of the worst in New Zealand: ruclips.net/video/Lp8ru3MpoBo/видео.html

    Bad is my favourite song, and this is a memorable performance of it. I remember when I first saw it: we'd dragged a mattress onto the living room floor so we could watch Live Aid through the night on our crappy old black and white TV. Every act up until U2 had stayed way up on the stage, far away from the crowd, so Bono making physical contact with the audience was like an electric shock. It was like he was reaching out to everyone watching. It's what he does, bless him. Great reaction, Shawn!

      Saw them in October twice, the second show was my 21st u2 concert. Wait until the official footage of the Sphere co
      Ea out, grown men in tears, me included. The first night was the most emotional concert my life and I do t really know why. I had recently read Bono’s book and learned he nearly died with an faulty aortic valve, maybe the thought of never seeing or hearing his voice again was deep in my soul of what might have never been.

    Really enjoyed your response to this and the level of appreciation you have for U2; it's been fun watching you discover them. Others have mentioned it, but this was a very significant performance not just for U2's career, but in rock history. The Live Aid performance of Bad has its own substantial Wikipedia page that covers a lot of the context other commenters have mentioned, but goes into more detail and is worth a read. U2 became the biggest rock band on the planet when The Joshua Tree hit, but it was this performance that really broke them into the mainstream at a high level. It cannot be overstated how big they blew up after this, and I think you understood why. They're just magnetic and captivating live.
    I saw a mention or two already, but to echo it: strong recommendation for Love is Blindness (studio) followed by the Zoo TV performance. It's an incredible song but the transformation live is similar to the studio version of Bad vs. Live Aid. The Edge was going through a divorce when the song was composed and he poured the anguish he felt into the song, and especially the live performance. One of his rare prolonged solos and it's deeply affecting. (Bono in MacPhisto costume may require some explanation...) Enjoy the journey.

    • @lauraallen55
      @lauraallen55 3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, studio then Zoo for LiB - good call!
      The whole band was on the brink of breaking up during the making of Achtung Baby. I think it's their masterpiece.
      Speaking of MacPhisto, I saw U2 at the Sphere in December and the two guys seated right next to me were dressed, one as Edge in the red 7 t shirt that I really really want a copy of and AB beanie, and the other was as MacPhisto, down to the makeup and every little detail!

    I highly recommend you do the ZooTv version of Love is Blindness - not because it's a favorite, but because it has one of Edge's rare solos, and you are such a big fan of his sound. Also, lyrics; you said you need to get into their lyrics, and I have to say Bono has some of the *absolute best* lyrics to their songs I have ever come across in music, period. One of dozens of examples: Every artist is a cannibal. Every poet is a thief. All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief.

    I watched Live Aid on TV, that day in July 1985. My family had a Beta Video, and my brother and I recorded most of the concerts. The Beta packed-in, a few years later.
    Originally, as Live Aid was a one-time charity, the Bob Geldolf and a few, got in motion -and all donations went to fund the famine relief in East Africa, and the musicians and crew all donated their time and effort,...Geldolf didn't want the concerts and music bootlegged (which, of course, they were!) There was an order to the TV broadcasters, by the Live Aid trust, to erase or destroy their broadcast tapes of the concert (BBC, MTV, etc),....some tapes, some parts of the concerts do not officially exist, yet do in bootleg. Geldof round a bootleg set in a street market,or music shop, around 2000. He realized, if money could still be made off the concerts, he'd rather that it still go towards charity. It was discovered that the BBC, MTV, a few others did have official and originals video -assembled, mastered and sold as a DVD set of like 4 discs in late 2003 (I recall buying it at the same time as the one season of "Firefly, on DVD). ....where a lot of the concert, shown on the internet, got its video and sound
    🤔🤫

    That was real, honest energy and passion, unique and brilliant at the time, although U2 always involved the audience in a similar way before and later - not in a cheap way.
    U2's brilliant concerts: Red Rocks 1983; Paris Joshua Tree 1987; Sydney ZOO TV 1993.
    Yes, in the evening the veterans came with their uniform "military show": they had been badmouthing the Live Aid idealists in advance, but needed a comeback in their home country in the mid-80s, so they performed anyway.

    What was going on was Bono somehow spotted one person in trouble in that sea of people and was gesturing and pointing to security to help her and get her out of there. The woman said later that she felt that he had saved her life from getting crushed to death. Bono has a way of drawing in all the energy from everyone in the crowd and sending it back out again. He is electric in person.

    There were 2 performances that day that any aspiring rock star or musician should watch because they are both clinics in rock and roll and it’s U2’s and Queen’s
    Bono and Freddie Mercury were on a different level to anything. They were outstanding.
    Queen were already a huge global band. U2 were big but not at queens global status. This performance propelled U2 so much. Then they released the Joshua Tree and they were eating at the top table.
    True story this song wasn’t supposed to go this long and because it did U2 couldn’t play their new single Pride. They had to cut it from the set. The band had a big argument about this , Bono thought he had blown his bands chance infront of billions. Little did they know it would become a thing of legend.
    Great review, u2 live are like no other band.

    During the 2019 JT tour of Australia, Australia was being ravaged by wild fires, during an emotional delivery of Bad, Bono sang Waltzing Matilda, a massive Australian folklore song and to hear 55 thousand Aussies sing it in unison with Bono in a time of need was a moment I’ll never forget. I was second from rail at the end of the Joshua Tree haled runway stage where they sang this song, brings goosebumps and emotion just describing it. Love Bono and U2!

    This is probably my favorite U2 song - which is tough because so many are close to my heart. I read a biography of them (my grandmother had bought for me probably more because the writers last name was our family name on the Irish side.) and they were VERY Christian - almost born again. This song, to me has themes of rebirth, resurrection - transcendence and salvation. Bono in this performance walking through the crowd like Jesus. LOL. Absolutely incredible in every way. My little 15 year old self seeing this in 1985 - just blown away and moved to tears.

  • @lauraallen55
    @lauraallen55 3 месяца назад +3

    Bad is about heroin addiction. Bono always thought it was unfinished but Edge told him it was perfect.
    The band almost split up over what happened here because they all thought that Bono had ruined their big chance to make it as a well-known act with him having disappeared and ultimately then helping the girl in the crowd and prevent her from being crushed. The rest of the band didn't know where he'd disappeared to for so long, and were very professional to keep playing as they did. Bono told them he'd leave the band for having ruined things for all of them. To the contrary, what happened during their performance of this song got them worldwide recognition. They thought they were done for because each act had 15 minutes, and no more, to do their songs, and because they spent so long on this one, they couldn't do one of their planned for songs.
    Bono is known for ad libbing from other songs live - like here Lou Reed's Satellite of Love and Walk on the Wild Side, Stones Sympathy for the Devil and Ruby Tuesday. U2 is one of the most dynamic and passionate live acts there ever has been. The best I've ever seen.
    Yes you must do much more U2. They have a huge catalog and they reinvented themselves every few years. So worthwhile to get into! Thank you for doing this one. :)
