Doesn't show it in this video because it's staged but if you watch the live videos, you can see him using it. Also saw an interview with him where he talks about it and trying to find the right toy laser to get the sound
Billy Idol is a British artist who started out during the '70s in the Punk band 'Generation X', he went solo in 1981. Songs which I recommend from him are: "White Wedding", "Flesh For Fantasy", "Eyes Without a Face", "Hot in the City", "Catch My Fall", "Mony Mony", "Sweet Sixteen", "Dancing with Myself", "Cradle of Love", "Shock to the System", "Wasteland", "Concrete Kingdom", "Shangri-la". There are many more but these are great ones to continue with.
'Rebel Yell' surely is Billy's most iconic song, so it is a perfect place to start into his work. My favourite tune of his is 'Dancing With Myself', it is his most groovy, and I am sure that you will love it.
I give you the counter argument of Wendy James, lead singer of Transvision Vamp, specific example "Baby I don't care". OK more I think about it, she's what you get if you gender swapped Billy Idol.
I see you Billy Idol and yes Rock scream sure Then there Metal scream. Rob Halford Judas Priest frontman. I would be hard pressed to top Bruce Dickerson Iron Maiden.
Yeah Billy and his band are cool! The guitarist Steve Stevens is exceptionally good for a punk rocker! Billy has a pretty deep rabbit hole. Check out: White Wedding and Mony Mony!! Great reaction Aileen!
As someone who grew up in the 80s, I was a huge fan of Billy Idol. I was fortunate to see him in concert many years ago. I have the opportunity to relive my youth this September when I get to see him in concert again. So looking forward to it!
You won’t be disappointed! I’ve been a fan since 1982 or thereabouts and saw him live in Australia in January 2020, just before the world went crazy! Front row and VIP so I got to briefly meet him and Steve and get photos. Tell a teen girl living in Queensland watching Billy Idol on TV that she’d see him live and meet him one day and she'd think you’re crazy! 😝

William Broad, aka, Billy Idol! Wow, what an era. He became popular in pop-culture near the end of the punk rock era. The intention was to create his own punk sound with a twist of sassy sweetness…with a sharp raw edge. He created the persona when a teacher graded one of his papers and wrote that he was “idle” on the paper. He thought, no, I’m gonna be an “idol”. What a great era for rock music!
Steve Stevens, his guitar player, just happens to be one of the best on the planet with a well established solo career and compilations with other artists.
I see a few people saying White Wedding, and that is definitely a must. The guitarist Steve Stevens is super underrated and is exceptional. My old guitar tutor was in a Billy Idol tribute band, and Steve was his guitar hero, I mean he played it with a ray gun!
I’m glad you reacted to Billy Idol. So many more songs for you to explore. In the 1980s-1990s there was a group of friends in Western Australia called The 7-11 All Stars. They performed as their idols but lip syncing. My Uncle was Billy Idol. He was the spitting image of him. He used to dress up and a friend would drive him around in a stretch limo with the rear window open a fraction. The girls and even some guys would chase the limo screaming. He performed at my high school in the late 80s. The girls were all drooling. One made a comment and I said that’s my uncle. He looked so much like Billy Idol. The leathers. Spiked blonde hair. The punk look. The curled lip when he was performing. No one believed me until he had finished performing and came backstage and hugged me and said hello. He appeared in our newspaper too. Such a great memory.
I remember when I was watching a Billy Idol video on TV with my sister when I was a kid, and my mom said "that guy is a lot like Elvis!" and you definitely see some influence there!
Billy came out of the 70's punk scene. When he went solo in the early 80's, he combined parts of punk, rock, electronic/dance. His videos were huge staples of MTV in the 80's and 90's.
He is the coolest dude i've ever met. At Four Seasons Hotel in Austin years ago where I used to work. He came in after his concert and talks just like he does in the videos. Absolutely awesome!!!

Hi Aileen 😊 Awesome awesome reaction to Billy Idol's Rebel Yell😊👍 As fellow RUclipsr commented when MTV happened in the early '80s all the artists started thinking of ways to promote themselves through video so you got a lot of theatrical in their music with hair, dress, makeup...it really changed the music industry in the 80s and into the 90s. Billy Idol was a lot... the Vj's would say and here's another one from Billy Idol 😊 Another RUclipsr commented about his deep voice sounding like Elvis...yep 😊 Also that curl on the lips... Billy Idol made Punk Rock digestible to the mainstream in a way no one else did. His band had very clean, clear music... no heavy distortion to cover up lesser quality musicianship... along with his looks and vocal talents, he was almost tailor made for the MTV of the 80s.
Billy Idol is what you think of when you think the very concept of punk. Even though many punk fans don't really consider him a punk rock singer, he became the absolute epitome of punk fashion. Effortlessly cool to this day.
My teenage years!! Had personalized plates on my 81 Z28 Camero, "REBEL 3" all through high school. And he's back touring again. One of the most underrated of his songs, "Untouchables" is one of my all time favorites of his.
great review! that being said your best quality is your voice! you should seriously look into doing something with that, voice overs, etc.... good luck
That voice and Steve Stevens is just a bad-ass guitar player and songwriter! Great stuff, especially on Billys first 3 albums... definitely a few high school parties with this blasting...
Back in I want to say 2010 he played a local fair in my area of Oregon, no joke at even that age he had a presence about him. Was all over the stage like it was still the 80s, dude still is a badass.
Billy Idol is so unique, incorporating elements from the greats of the past like colors on a palette, ready to paint a mood with. His guitarist Steve Stevens the perfect foil, creating rhythmic chaos around Billy's voice. Senpai, you really HAVE to hear White Wedding, one of the creepy-coolest sister-con songs ever recorded. I also has what I consider Billy's most dangerous-sounding growl. Great reaction to a classic!
Billy Idol was and still is phenomenal. You should check out 'Hot In The City,' 'Dancing With Myself,' 'White Wedding,' 'Come On, Come On,' and 'Eyes Without A Face.'
Favorite reaction to this song! I grew up listening to Billy Idol, David Bowie,Prince, Cyndi Lauper, and so many more, I wish I could share that experience with the younger generations!
Saw him in concert with Faith No More opening up for him. This was after one of his motorcycle accidents and he had to walk with a cane, yet, he still killed it. One of the better concerts I ever went to.
Billy is actually quite interesting from a history point of view. He was a part of the Bromley contingent in the 1970s, which was a group of punks who followed the Sex Pistols around (my home town, where Billy was from). He was part of the 70s British Punk group, Generation X but moved to the USA in the 80s to start a solo career. His music has so many influences, ranging for straight up rock to punk and even new wave. His biggest influence though was Elvis Presley, hence the curled lip and the section of this song where he changes his voice to that lower register, almost mimicking Elvis. He even performed a song with Generation X called King rocker, which was about a fantasy fight between Elvis and Muhummed Ali. Billy will be 69 (ooerr) in November, and is still recording music and touring. Saw him a few years ago live, and he is still bloody amazing.
I remember the first time I heard Billy Idol. I was 13 years old and crossing the country from Washington, DC to LA alone. I picked up a cassette of Billy Idol. I rocked out to White Wedding and the rest of the songs. I will bet I played it 20 times on the way there. That was kind of a surreal experience for a kid of my age at the time. But I made it there and back about 6 months later, once again, alone. Listening to him brings back the memories of that time. I would love if you would do White Wedding sometime.
Thank You so much for this and all your reactions Aileen 😀 You are the only person to ever mention what an amazing part the Bass always makes to a song! Next check out his cover of 'Mony Mony' that is a banging track

Hot in the city?
Billy Idol was the coolest guy in the world back then.
The quintessential Rock & Roller.

He really still is. Dude is 60 and still has rock solid abs and sounds just as good as he did.
He also had a small role in Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

And than he appeared in The Wedding Singer. 😄

They are touring in Canada this summer with Platinum Blonde

I think there's something timeless in his voice, that'll never go out of style.
I'd recommend Cradle of Love and White Wedding, both are bangers. Spent the 90s with Billy Idol cassettes lol
