I just did this lastnight...the best and easiest way to plug this in is to push the brake pedal in. I put a 2x4 on the pedal and wedged it against the seat. This gives you the room behind the switch to easily twist it in!! Took 5 minutes! O btw..this didn't erase the codes!! Good luck!
Hey Minnesota! My '04 C4S started to give the warning light. Found your DIY solution and it worked great! Installation was the only issue due to the crazy tight angle. I grabbed some Robo Grip pliers and it went in smoothly. Thanks for the great info!
Great fix, thanks very much!!!My 01 996TT had the same failure message come on during a recent track event. Perhaps the hard braking aggravated the switch. I ordered a new oem part. While waiting for it to arrive, I disassembled the old one and cleaned the 3 sets of contacts. Reinstalled, and no more problem. Thanks again.
I replaced my old switch on my 2002 996 Turbo with a new one yesterday and it corrected my PSM and ABS lights. The new switch was at least one third of an inch longer as the old switch was worn an would not extend fully. Remove the plastic a/c routing “hose” to make access to the switch easier…just pull on it and it will come out. It flexes in the middle to assist re-installation.
Just did this then took the old switch apart, looks like a good clean out would have done the trick. Also I suspect that doing the job on a LHD model is slightly easier than a RHD unless you are left handed and have very strong fingers. Incidentally Porsche Centre quoted £1300 to do the job!
Hi, thanks a million for the post, really helpful, had the same issue in my 996 c4s. Old part was relatively easy to remove, the new part was bugger to fit. Got there in the end and solved the ABS/PSM warning lights fault :)
My ABS ABD light would come on after driving about 20 feet, in either forward or reverse. Turns out it was the relay (one of two) in the trunk on the pax side. The one closest to the gas tank was the culprit.
Thanks, I have replaced mine too and realised that the plunger will self adjust as you push it into place. It gets pushed in by the pedal and can be pulled out again by hand with a bit of force.
thanks for the tip. Worked for me. Only issue with installation were the little ears on the new plug. Couldn't install it (turn it) till I shaved some off then it turned in as designed.
Had same issue fixed this way (Boxster 986). My independent Porsche workshop changed it for free (I bought the switch at a Porsche Center as he did not have one in stock).
Auto Amateur yup, exactly. Once I get it upto par I want to change out the exhaust. After that we will see where I go with her. Ill be posting up videos on my youtube of it as I go
Auto Amateur Im uploading a video now of the color change on the inlets of the shifter and handbreak. Itll prolly be ready to view in about an hr or 2. Not gettin great internet service at my current location.
I had this issue right after I changed my stoplights to LED. I thought it was the brake pedal switch but that didn't resolve the issue. It turned out that as soon as I changed one of the light bulbs back to incandescent the problem went away. After some research, found a solution that involves putting a 20ohm resistance in one of the stoplight circuits. The error code hasn't appeared again.
Fred, Can you elaborate on what was done. Where did you put the resistor to the third brake light or other ? I just installed all new LED lights yesterday including the third light strip and last night I went out to see how they looked at night and the darn ABS PSM lights came on. Had not even driven the car so I'm quite sure my issue is the same you had. Kind of sucks after spending 1575.00 and an afternoons work mucking about swapping the units out ! Still awaiting fresh rear turn signal lamps to finish the job out.
@@scscotto Sure thing! You have two options; replace one of the bulbs on the stop light circuit (like one of the smaller ones inside the 3rd brake light bar) back to incandescent or splice a resistor on the positive side of one of the stop light bulbs. I placed mine under the left tail light assembly but it doesn't matter which. The resistor may get hot if you stay on the brake for a long time so watch that it doesn't touch plastic or other wires as it can melt them. I used one of these (small one) and screwed it to the body behind the light assembly. I went with one with a heat sink for obvious reasons. Hope it helps. www.circuitcrush.com/wp-content/uploads/Power-Resistors-2.png
@@scscotto I need to add that I didn't have issues until I changed all of the stop lights to led. When I had just the tail lights on LED but the 3rd brake light on incandescent, I didn't have any issues. You get the idea.
@@Fred82ndAbn well the LED one would not illuminate at all. I removed it and put the old one back in which still of course works fine and the lights went away immediately. I bought head light assemblies, tail lights and the third light all from casakey (Taiwan) on E Bay. I'm just going to return the third light. Ours is an 01 911 so supposedly should not need relays but who knows. Now my only issue is the left rear turn signal light does not illuminate with a brand new good incandescent bulb. Right works fine and both sides I set my old harness up the same for. I even unplugged the little lead for the small light you have to remove but the left just won't power that indicator light when the turn signal is activated. I'm going to disconnect their bulb base leads next from my harness and see if the light works again. Then I'll know if it's something with their set up. Thank you for the input. The struggles of mucking about with a 21 year old 911 !
Steven Sturgill Quinton TV Hey, so I have a Boxster ‘06 and followed this instructions and it fixed the issue I was having with the PSM and ABS light coming on as well as getting the car to start. But now the brake lights are permanently on. I tried twisting it in counterclockwise like the video said, then I did clockwise like you said but still nothing. I also tried with the T facing both ways, but still nothing. Do you think the switch itself is a bad one and I should get a replacement or can it be a bigger issue? Thanks for the help!!
I got the same error code in my 997 when coming to a red light. Went away the next time I fired up the car. Saw another video where it was the wheel speed sensor. I guess I “need” to get the Durametric so I can figure it out for sure.
I bought the new switch, it’s identical but the new one won’t twist in. The old one twists in very easily. They look identical so not sure why it won’t go in
Most likely because the old one is broken or well worn in through extensive use. I found it difficult to get the new switch in also, but once in it clicked into place just fine and the error message went away.
Ok was able to get it in.. What you have to do is sort of plunge it in and out a few times quickly. I did it maybe 6 times, don’t know what that did but I was able to twist it in after. Good luck!
Does this place see any water damage? My car had dreaded rain water seepage which fried the ecu under the seat, replaced that. But I have the exact same warning lights now, the ABS and PSM. Should I try replacing the brake switch? My mechanic says Yaw Rate sensor is bad, which I haven't a clue what that is.
I didn't have any water issues when I owned this 996 and the brake switch isn't in a place which would get water on it. Or put it this way, if you have water a foot deep inside your 911 you've got bigger problems. :)

The dash error messages don’t really give much of a clue - how did you narrow it down to the switch?
I read about it on one of the forums I believe. It was the result of hours and hours of Googling late at night one time. :)
Nice B-roll ;)
Great, gonna change one Saturday, 40 bucks up here in Canada
Yeah but you get cheaper health care and medication up there, so it balances out. 🙃😄

Bummer. Replaced the switch as my brake lights are stuck on and the switch seems to not be the problem…

Não se arrisque com seus freios. Meu melhor conselho é levar seu carro à concessionária para que seja verificado por um profissional.

No.
