His line to cobra commander, “be silent or be silenced” is unironically one of the best villain threats I’ve ever heard.
G.I. Joe the Movie has one of the best intros ever.
Yo Joe my friend, Yo Joe!!!!!
I would have to say BEST....period!! Its a mini movie by itself.
@Hexal One 1986 Transformers movie did disappoint money wise but I loved it and this movie too!! Wish the opening of Transformers was like this!!

I'll never forget as a kid when they would yell, "Cobra La La La La La!!!"
Yeah..it was so lame.
To be honest I liked it when the Cobra La Royal Guards yelled it out but once Serpentor yelled it out in the Cobra night raven. I hated it so much, he sounded so stupid... LOL
Cobra commander was mutated
Funniest was when Serpentor yelled "Cobra La_La_La-La_La

I still occasionally scream "coba la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la" in my head, from time to time.
Me too. :P. Since I want to do vids like "GI Joburg" someday, I've been practicing my Golobulus voice too. :P
I love Golobulus and Cobra-La. How their 'technology' is literally all living organisms. Awesome.
So there Protoss?
@@mikedavis1476 I'll be honest, I have no idea what protos means. However, if it means that literally every fabric of clothing, every suit of armor, every piece of furniture, and every weapon and technological thing either comes from something living or is itself technically 'alive'? Then absolutely yes! Cobra-La is the most fascinating place in all of fiction other than maybe Mobius (Sonic's home planet)

I thought Nemesis Enforcer was a badass. Loved it when SGT. Slaughter beat his ass in the movie lol
I was ten when the movie first aired. My cousin and I rushed home from school to watch it! Man I loved G.I. Joe! I owned every issue of the comic and all the mini-series, as well as literally at least 95% of all the toys (my parents were divorced and bought me things out of guilt lol)! The nostalgia is strong 😁. Got a new subscriber for sure!
Sgt Slaughter: “You make me sick!” Love that line! Even with the hokey Cobra La crap, this was a great movie. I watched it with my dad, and years later with my son.
That's an amazing story! I hope you and son love sharing things like this with each other.
I wish Golobulus and Cobra La should have a live action debut in the next G.I. Joe Movie.
Could you imagine the bad cgi with no budget lol
They should have done this in the first place
This better become a live action movie, because the GI Joe movies need this...BADLY
When I 1st saw him, Pythona and Nemesis Enforcer, I thought they were badass! I'd never seen G.I. Joe go up against such monstrous looking characters at the time, and I'm sure I wasn't the only kid at the time who felt this. Any hater would have to be a comic book purist; just where are they when the MCU came to being?
I am fond of Cobra-La too. Despite the hate they get. I honestly think things would've went better if Cobra-La was made a joint faction between GI Joe and Inhumanoids. Especially since one of the good guys on that show was a former Joe. Either make the crossover event a multi-part week-length episode Saga or the actual film.
@@dubuyajay9964
A joint faction? They're villains who want to destroy all of humanity!
@@derekbates4316 Yeah. As in teaming up with the monsters from the Inhumanoids show?
@@dubuyajay9964
You mean the Inhumanoids?
@@derekbates4316 Yes.
I still remember crying when Duke got that snake-dart in the chest from Serpentor that was meant for his “wise ass”, assignment-ditching half brother Falcon
He was in a coma, probably…
Nemesis Enforcer!!!! Was the coolest!!!
The only good thing about Golobulus was that he was voiced by the late Burgess Meredith aka the Penguin from the old Batman series and Mickey from the Rocky movies.
Literally, Golobulus was the best thing that happened to that mythos. Everything before him was shitty cosplay.
Don't forget Golobulous had a great vocabulary.
Cobra Commander: guilty of fighting G.I.Joe w/o success many times. Cobra-La tries one time and become extinct. So Cobra Commander wasn't that bad in his job, after all.
Preach, brother.
This was a good story on Golobulus, remember I had the action figures back in the day
I did to
Same
i loved the 3 pack he was in when i was little...i remember goin to child world and gettin that 3 pack and the Slaughters Renegades 3 pack....man i hope the classified series gets this deep
I made a story that Cobra La was actually short for Cobra Laboratories and was led by Dr. Golobulus. He illegally experimented on Cobra soldiers and made the Cobra La “race” as we saw them in the movie. The ancient race thing was a made up fantasy from Golobulus actually going insane. Cobra Commander was financing the lab but Golobulus used the retreat in the beginning of the movie as a chance to gain control of Cobra. No one else but Cobra Commander knew of Cobra Laboratories and their experiments.
Get outta' my head, you! I thought more or less the same thing.
@@walterlucero5757 You guys too? That's just bizarre! I swear to God, if either of you had your Duke brainwashed into Nemesis Enforcer or Billy as Serpentor, I'm going to be upset.
@@Rojixus Holley smokes! All three of us ought to get jobs writing GIJoe at IDW! We might even save the company with our ideas!

That it was! Nemesis Enforcer was my favorite!
Cobra La? Well, this was an unexpected surprise.
You wrote unwanted wrong.
chuck sussman Meh...
I personally enjoyed this origin of Cobra and thought the storyline was cool. I love reading books on the theory that an alien reptilian bloodline rules our planet from behind the scenes. This made the G.I. Joe universe so much more fun and interesting to me.🐍🐲
Alien reptilians people, most unlikely, but an ancient race of earth reptilians people is more believable.
I did as well. It explains perfectly the reason for Cobra’s desire for World Domination. It also ties in nicely with the Real Reptilian Conspiracy.
I like Cobra-La but hated the notion they were the progenitor of Cobra. I used them as the creepy subterranean cult Cobra Commander allied with to help him overthrow Serpentor, then they became a bigger threat everyone had to team up against later.
Basically, Hordak to Cobra Commanders Skeletor.
HAIL COBRA COMMANDER...
The great snake rules forever...
🐍 COBRAAAAAA 🐍
Hated the whole Cobra La thing as a kid. I didn't want my G.I. Joe to go so far sci fi. Strangely as an adult I love it.
JUSTIN Senko it was totally stupid. It didn’t make sense.
Cobra La had potential. Sadly, that potential was wasted... But hey, if it were brought back, I wouldn't complain... So long as it wasn't just another ret-con/reboot that only existed to get rid of Cobra Commander of course!
I'd rather Cobra La (and awesome animation) that what followed: eco-warriors, the Headman, Capt Gridiron, Metal Head's mother's visit, bad art, poor animation, terrible bgm, and too many neon ninjas, etc etc.
@@ta0paipai Good point. I was actually quite sad to learn that apparently Cobra La was essentially OMITTED from G.I. Joe continuity. Sure, it's understandable but HASBRO made their bed and now they have to lie in it! If they had to make Cobra La less in our faces why not just ret-con it so Cobra La was too bust recovering from their base being decimated by the events of G.I. Joe - The Movie to be any trouble for G.I. Joe and as a result, were still alive but effectively gave up on their efforts to take over the world and called a truce with G.I. Joe?
@@leaderstragg I would have loved to see the comics continue in a more serious direction, while the cartoon went more sci-fi via Cobra-la. Having the Joes fight an "alien" (of sorts) force would have probably made for less censored battles (ie not violence against other humans) and would have moved away from the increasingly taboo "terrorist organization" idea. It would have, without a doubt been better than the DIC (post movie) cartoon series.
Best childhood movie on par with The Transformers movie for me! Good memories.
How many takes did the voice actor for Serpentor have to do before he could say, "Cobralalalalala" without cracking up?
According to Buzz Dixon, Dick Gautier was supposed to deliver the line in a shrill voice similar to that of the Cobra-La Guards but Dick couldnt pitch his voice very high.
This was the moment G.I. Joe jumped the shark. I remember watching this and thinking "What is all this nonsense???"
It made sense to have some mythology otherwise how do you do a movie ?
Some say Serpentor was the Shark Jump, but this is when it was really all over.
I agree. Great animation, but Shark Jump!
Gi Joe had always been borderline sci fi. Technology like space travel, lasers, and even cloning were exaggerated perfectly. Even things like shrink rays, or time travel can be explained away with some science jargon. But, yeah when this came out,,, WTF? It was like Hasbro was sending me a personal message that I was getting too old for toys.
04:18. Don't forget Mickey from the "Rocky" films. And guest spots on the original "Twilight Zone."
I like almost everything about the Cobra-La Story Line. Accept the sidelining of Cobra-Commander. Hama was right about that!
Here after reading Cobra Commander 1
*They're BACK*
Hopefully better writen this time since it seems CC is doing more of a "Batman Begins" combining the G1 Comic and Cartoon and still keeping him somewhat human. Just a human that went native and had to get implants after combat injuries.
Cobra La La La La La La 🤣
I know! My brother and I laugh at this all the time!
😭
I liked the connection between Cobra-La and Unicron.
I remember my friend showing me his Golobulus figure telling me it was a GI Joe figure and I wouldn't believe him.
Toei animation did such an awesome job of draftsmanship and animation why this forever remembered by me. 💯
thumbs up for the tectonic plate theory of how the Cobra-La was based on crustaciouns left behind before the current structure of the oceans
I haven't heard Cobra LaLalala battle cry in years, thx you 😮🤔😫🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I still have this character
Cobra Commander's only failure was not permanently eliminating those that tried to take over Cobra for their own selfish purposes.
I know people hate Golobulus and all of Crobra-La (for good reason) but honestly I always found the idea really neat, pitting these slightly futuristic military men against an ancient civilisation that they can't even comprehend. I think if they hadn't tied it so directly to Cobra it would've worked
I'd love to see a darker more gritty G.I. Joe w/ Cobra La.
As a kid, I liked the movie and still think back on it but as I got older I was like, wait why are there fantastical creatures in this mostly realistic cartoon?
Anybody remember 'Toxic Crusader' ?

Still love the movie and Dragonfire follow-up.
I wrote three “sequels” to the Joe movie and series which sort of reimagines the concept and idea of Cobra La and Golobulus.
Golobulus was in reality a former Nazi scientist, bought over to the U.S after WW2 with Operation Paperclip and used to work with the U.S government. After it was discovered he was experimenting on human subjects in the early 1960s, he went into hiding taking some die hard followers with him and ultimately taking up refuge in the Himalayas where he created the society he would later dub “Cobra La”. Many sought out this secret society, while others were taken there against their will and were forced to join his ranks. The woman who would later become Pythona was one such person who willing went in an attempt to escape the Chinese mafia. One who was forced to join was the giant of man know as Nemesis Enforcer who was sent by the mafia to bring Pythona back. His mind nearly destroyed by the changes enforced by Golobulus, he ultimately became Cobra La’s dominate fighting machine.
As the 1980s began, and as his society continued to grow and flourish, so did Golobulus’ ambitions and goals. He knew he needed an army to achieve these things. He set his sights on Cobra, and devised a plan to acquire the terrorist organization for his own. Infect Cobra Commander with the same organism he would later use on Mindbender to create Serpentor, alter his memories, make him believe the lies as portrayed in the Joe film about Cobra La’s ancient past and his connection to him, and this would solidify Golobulus’ position as the supreme ruler of the Cobra forces without debate from the rest of the Cobra hierarchy. He would then replace Cobra Commander with Serpentor (as he did in Arise, Serpentor, Arose!) and his control of Cobra would be complete...
The stories I wrote deal with Cobra Commander ultimately retrieving his true memories (which more resemble the comics), learning the truth of Cobra La and it’s true origins, hunting down Golobulus and the final confrontation between the Commander and Serpentor...
You should publish them as know I would read it makes cobra la fit better in GI.JOE
That's a great storyline!
Too bad you didn't write the original film, it would have actually been good.
@Man of Action would love to but this is th o.p. original take on cobra la and i think it's brilliant
That was awesome...

I had a Golobulus action figure when I was a kid. You couldn’t mold that tail too well, he couldn’t stand up by himself lol. But still cool.
Yeah I remember, I had enforcer too
I still have him!
I always used to lean him up against a HISS Tank to keep him upright. A pretty pathetic posture for the ancient ruler of Cobra-La.
@@infjintegrityvsnarcissism7295 Did you (or did Block Head, Aydensgames or Jonny G) have the third Cobra-La figure - the Royal Guards? (yes, I’m aware they were troops, unlike Golobulus - the leader, and Nemesis Enforcer, who were the two individuals of Cobra-La)

Jajajaja my brother did too back in Mexico. But we hadn't seen the movie yet so we thought the Guard was the main boss!
I watched this with captions. I admit, I enjoyed watching RUclips struggle with it. 😉
If it was Unicron that drove them underground that would explain how they hated artificial technology.
When Unicron visited Earth, Cobra-La was Earth's defense. A yeti, Nemesis Enforcer and a female leader similar to Golobulous.
They had metal-eating spores that can harm Unicron. And a deal was made. If the Earth ended up full of metal and resembles Unicron, he would eat it. So, modern man's technology dominating the world and some Cybertronian TRANSFORMERS on it, it was more than Golobulous would bear. It was time to use natural tech to take over world. And hurry it up before Unicron gets to return.
To this day, 33 years later, it still strikes me odd that the producers literally scrambled to change Duke's death after children and parents lashed out about Optimus Prime.
I've heard that the Japanese dub kept Duke's death.
The real question is this: how did the voices actors keep a straight face while yelling the Cobra-La war cry?!
I thought the Cobra-La story was awesome! Totally Hollow Earth.

The GiJoe ANNUAL last year had a five page back up story that acted like a prelude to a new GIJOe cartoon comic with Pythona showing up and taking the gem from nemesis enforcer body. The status of this new comic is unknown at this time
Cobra La isn’t a bad idea they just shouldn’t have been in GI Joe.
this is the prototype of the borg queen.
I am still in agreement with Mr. Hama about this subgroup. Like HCC788, I to liked G.I. Joe for its near realism. Some sci-fi was expected, but Cobra-La was too much! Still like the early 80s Joe stories and figures
GI Joe jumped the shark with the movie. Sad.

As a kid, I thought it was a stupid idea to have Cobra-La and it didn't make sense for Cobra Commander to wear a mask that covered the majority of his eyes.
An emperor is higher than a king.
Interesting evolution from what they introduced in 1982 to what they reimagined by 1987.
The people running the GI Joe line at Hasbro had to be doing major drugs to come up with some of the story lines and characters near the end of the line.

They never made it into the comics -- Larry Hama drew the line at Cobra-La lol. I think there may have been a small mention of them in an issue of Special Missions but the last reference during the original run is on the trading cards where it says they all got buried in an avalanche.

One thing that G.I. Joe, Transformers and He-Man had in common was mess up their winning formulas by weakening their main villain by retconning new ones.
Yeah, I hated the: 'You didn't think up Serpentor, Mindbender. We Incepted it before Inception was a thing.'
Exactly.
Except Transformers and He-Man were enriched by the addition of Unicron and Hordak and King Hiss. Cobra-La? Not so much.
Learn alot from your uploads. Had the A.G.P. and Nullifier did look kinda strange.
Haha great ending with the audio! 😂
I was a kid watching Transformers the movie in the theater and I couldn't believe they killed off my favorite characters. Why? Then it occurred to me: To sell more more toys. Imagine 9 year old me, huge fan and them destroying everything I loved about Transformers. Prime was basically Robot Jesus to me. Realizing they just emotionally scarred me to sell me more plastic...I was livid. I never bought any more Transformers. I stopped being a fan. It took 20 years before I could even appreciate the amazing art in that movie.
Then they did it again with GI Joe the Movie. Less emotionally involved, I bought the new character pack (giant half snake man was kinda cool next to my other action figures). But they were the last GI Joe toys I bought. In an attempt to sell me more stuff I stopped loving their shows. I stopped buying their toys. They got a small sale but destroyed my love and fandom. Cobra Commander was gone. Replaced. They didn't kill Duke but it was obvious they were going to. And Globulus and CobraLa were stupid names. Hasbro should have listened to their writers.
As an adult I understand why they did it. It's a business. But I want toy makers to think about their fans before short term profits. Fans can easily move on and leave your plastic to the toy bin of history.
Thank you! 👍🏻👍🏻
