Hello and thanks for watching! Quick clarification: when I mention a new promotion, I am not saying AMA is new because it wasn’t at the time, but that he went to another place. 😎
Can you cover Piper's gi joe character: The Iron Grenader, pity the two never got signed at the same time, given that the two did have a few go's in the ring and having a another in show rivalry would've been hilarious
U mentioned that Slaughter quit WWF in the early 80s but want to specify it was all because of Hasbro & GI Joe. Vince forbade Slaughter to sign with Hasbro and Slaughter quit as he really loved Hasbro's pitch to him. Slaughter stated he explained to Vince it would be a huge opportunity for WWF telling him about the cartoon. Vince disagreed with him telling him no as Vince was dealing with other Toy companies and production companies for a cartoon to promote WWF. Slaughter told Vince that GI joe was worth quitting and went to AWA as they supported the decision. Vince then tried to replace Sgt Slaughter's type of character with Corporal Kirshenor but did not work. Years later Slaughter said that he did not regret the decision as doing the Gi Joe deal was one of the happiest and best business decisions he ever made.
I met him in November. What a stellar guy! Talked nothing but positive experiences about wrestling and G.I. Joe. Really dedicated to what he represented to kids in the 80s... now grown and remembering the influences he had. Of the celebrities I met that weekend, chatting with THE Sgt. Slaughter was one of the best experiences. Super genuine. Super kind.
My grandfather was a plumber and had to fix something at his house back in the early 80s. He took me to work with him that day, and Sarge came and met me, dressed the part, and picked me up like a rag doll. One of my fondest memories.
Guy is a living legend and real legit tough guy. A mountain of a man and fit into the toy line perfectly. Kudos to hasbro for getting him back recently and releasing a new figure.
I knew this guy named Travis right after college. We were talking about GI Joe one day and he told me he went to K-mart or one of the stores and just happened to be in camo pants and a black tank top, not all that uncommon in the 80s. He had no idea anything was going on that day and won a Sgt Slaughter look-alike contest on the spot. He won one of every GI Joe toy fabricated up to that point. He said he loved it but his mom hated how there wasn't enough space for it all.
I didn't know Sgt. Slaughter was a wrestler until after g.i. joe was over. I was shocked when i found out he was a real person. That had to be dope for him back then
Legend has it McMahon ordered Slaughter to drop the Hasbro deal and he refused. There are rumors he was also trying to form a union. His popularity cannot be downplayed, he was on Hogan's level. He just never made it to the big WWF media push. Hasbro approached him says something of his main stream appeal.
Following him on twitter and Facebook also watching his daughter's RUclips channel . Watched him on wwe since 1990 as a teen. He's an intelligent man with great sense of humour.
I remember a few years ago read IDW a reader wrote a letter asking them if Slaughter was going to return. The reply was one word......”No”. Guess the license isn’t in the budget
FYI The WWF/E let Slaughter leave the because they only had room for one top babyface, Hulk Hogan. Due to Sarge's GI Joe success he was becoming just as popular, perhaps even more so than Hulk Hogan in 1986. Which didnt sit well with Vince McMahon, so they let Slaughter go back to the AWA. Which then in 1987, came Wrestlemania 3 and Hulk vs Andre (which put Hogan over for good). When Slaughter returned to the WWF, they made him a turncoat heel in order to completely ruin his reputation and further put Hogan over. Which he couldn't renew his GI Joe contract because of it, which was a shame. Ive always felt that Slaughter got the raw end deal of Vince McMahon's power, and it cost him dearly (fincially). If Slaughter had been allowed to stay in the WWF, he would have been as big or bigger than Hogan, and wrestling history would have been quite different. Which he has GI Joe to thank for the popularity.
Vince made him out to be a big joke at the expense of DX n the late 90's. Shortly after that, he became a corporate "stooge" alongside Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco. Nobody ever took him seriously after that. At least nobody that didn't grow up in the 80's and/or early 90's. Younger fans mostly remember him as one of Vince's lackeys.
I remember. His toy comercial. He was fighting. Versus 5 cobra soldiers. And recked them . And that impressed the hell out of a 4 year old me. Since then he became my favorite g.i joe
Back then I had no idea he was a wrestler. He was such a fun and over the top character. A shouting match between him and Serpentor sounds highly amusing
I remember when Retaliation was in pre production there was a rumor about Sgt. Slaughter, supposedly it was him and not General Coulton whom Roadblock, Flint and Lady Jaye were looking for
Road Dawg who was part of D Generation X was a Marine that served in the Gulf War, I believe he was an e7. Jesse Venture was UDT/ Seal precursor in Vietnam, Perry Saturn was an Army Airborne Ranger.
This is a new golden age of Sarge action figures, with the excellent Valaverse Action Force version and also Hasbro did one in the GI Joe Classified line.
There was a rumor that Slaughter was kicked out of the Marine Core. Unnecessary Roughness. Other rumors that a Drill Instructor at Paris Island marched his platoon through a mud pit and someone drowned.
Sergeant Slaughter truly is the G. I. Joe of professional wrestling. He is truly an American icon. My hat's off to you, Sgt. Slaughter. You will always be a member of G. I. Joe in my eyes.

Valaverse is making a new Action Force figure line. Sgt Slaughter is now on that team. The figures will been like Marvel Legends and GI Joe Classified. Can't wait for those figures. On the real, GI Joe can be looked at as propaganda. Same as trading cards for Desert Storm and Shield. Sgt Slaughter was one of the motivating factors of my decision as a small child to become a US Marine. I was at Parris Island during the terrorist attack of 9/11 2001 and am proud of my service...even if the idea to serve came from an 80's cartoon lol

Then, when he turns face again, I would have the Gi Joe team find a way to break Cobra's hold over him and he would once again become a member of their team. I know its cheesy by today's standards but I think it would work for its time.
I do believe you have some of your facts wrong.Sgt. Slaughter started out in the AWA not the WWF. The AWA was out of Minneapolis Minnesota.Where Hulk Hogan also started out.My favorites were the older ones like Crusher,Animal,The Barron.
@naitethagr8 Undertaker also started in AWA not sure if he had Paul-barer with him as his manager. Also the Heart foundation,Brett heart and his brother(can't remember it).Greg and Vern Gagne,Jessie the body Ventura,Bobbie the weasel,And many many more.
@naitethagr8 AWA Americas Title Match: Sgt Slaughter (c) vs Kamala 1986/04/20 All you had to do is youtube search it.Found it for you.
@naitethagr8 he was sgt.slaughter in the N.W.A. before the wwf!
@@COYO-T the undertaker started in wccw as red rider or something like that.
@@winddmmy Best known as "The Undertaker" from World Wrestling Entertainment. He first came to the WWF in 1990 as Ted DiBiase's mystery partner at The Survivor Series (1990) That's a copy paste from his Bio.
I didn't understand why it took so long for Destro's Iron Grenadiers to recruit Rowdy Roddy Piper. Piper should've joined as early as 1989 or 1990.
Piper was already one of WWE's most beloved babyfaces in the late 80's. Had they done it around 85 or 86 when Piper was still a hated heel, they might have had the perfect counterpart for Slaughter among Cobra's ranks.
Well he returns this year and is going to get his own Classified series 6" figure
