Baby's Conversation With Grandmother

  • This is my son (who was born in 1997) when he was around 1.5 years old, before he could talk. I guess nobody told him speaking the language was necessary for conversation! This conversation is still legendary in our family. Sadly, his grandmother passed away in 2009. She is missed every day. She was even more wonderful than she seems in this video.

He is showing us he knows something about language. He is using eye gaze, intonation and phrasing to show a variety of expression and he is demonstrating conversational turn taking skills. Now all he needs is the actual vocabulary to fill in the jargon. Language development is fascinating. There is so much going on in this clip.

Very fascinating to see that he has mastered expression in vocal cues such as pace, pitch, volume, etc, before words. It indicates that expression through vocal cues is actually fundamental in
communication and more important than the words themselves. Also, watch when the eye contact occurs. It is very specific. Amazing to watch!

I miss my gran so much. She raised me like a son. I felt sometimes my only purpose in life was to be there for her and sometimes it felt like after her husband passed away, I was a dear friend of hers. I used to pick her up in my car and we'd go for long drives, or i'd take her to the shops. Sometimes we had arguments but often we would share the gospels to one another and have church between the two of us. I found her on the couch and she passed in her sleep which was a blessing I suppose, I saw her last message was that via an sms from an old friend on the other side of the country talking about Jesus. In her Bible, she had a poem called "miss me but let me go". It's been such a long time but I think about her daily and I do not know how to function anymore. She had a really rough life, a sordid life in many aspects. She was a victim of many things and she overcame life threatening situations, the threat of being killed, losing all he possessions due to theft and incredible pain due to health issues. She never complained though, she was my "granny" and I loved her so much. It's been 4 years and I still tear up thinking about her. I don't know what to do but I know how proud she was of me, I was a washout but she'd call me her showpony and embarass me in public. It's embarrassing being an adult man and being called that but if I could go back, I would have given her a hug an and a kiss. I have many regrets, like not showing up for 2 weeks because I was out of the area, and not phoning her when I would do so every 2nd day... I ignored the instincts and paid. I just wanted to ask you, if that's okay... I you were in my shoes, and you were in hers... what do you think she'd be doing or thinking right now? That poem gets me... but it's difficult to let go. Every year things get worse. Everybody around me is dying. I wish I could go back.

@@cowboyanimal6700 Hello from California. I want to tell you that you are beating yourself up and you do not deserve it! I have so many beautiful memories of my grandmother, just like you. I was her eldest grandchild and, believe me , we adored each other. Looking back I know I had disappointed her sometimes especially in my 20’s and 30’s. When I was a little girl I lived with her on weekends at her Victorian home in San Francisco. She was pure love even though she outlived her husband and both sons.
Now, at 68, I realize that she understood that I had a young family, a corporate job, and so much to juggle every second.
I asked her why she thought it was difficult to tell children anything about life, and not listen to good advice. She said
“Dearie, younger people do what they are supposed to do, and older ones do what THEY are supposed to do.”
I promise you that you will see her again. Don’t worry so much about the past. The best is yet to come!

I always talked like this with my children and grandchildren. I think it is important for them to feel like someone is trying to communicate with them. Makes them more interested in talking back and understanding. Love this video. Sorry the grandmother is gone. At least you have this treasure to remember her by!

Laura Miner definitely, you can see this baby has the opportunity to learn the rules of conversation, turn-taking, responding to the other person, eye contact, expressing himself with non-verbal, intonation, and the best thing, he is being LISTENED to and that will ensure his development will continue

The only people who would hit the dislike button on a video as heartwarming as this are those who never had a grandmother, or for that matter, anyone, who listened to them with such unconditional love and acceptance. It must drive them crazy to witness what love in action looks like, and the confidence and trust that it builds.

Some people cannot connect with babies. A man me and my daughter and grandkids shared a train coach with became annoyed because the kids were making "noise". Well he changed coaches which was good.
Some people do not like babies or kids of any discrption. They probably have their reasons.
