When I was growing up my mother made it my job to clean with a cloth between our Russian Blue's ("Natasha") paws prior to going to bed each night to clean out any kitty litter that might be trapped and irritate them. One night I came home late and forgot to do this. In the middle of the night, I woke up when she was rubbing my nose to get my attention. When I turned on the light she was sitting on the end of my bed with the cloth in her mouth as if to say "You didn't clean my paws tonight"--she was a cat of "routine" and would be upset if that routine didn't happen

They are ridiculously intelligent. Mine liked to get in the clothes baskets after I washed clothes. So one day I was doing laundry and I had a basket of clean clothes, so I put it up on the top bunk of my daughters' bunk beds for a short time. I came back and he was collecting my daughters' dirty socks and clothes off the floor, dragging them up to the top bunk and putting them next to the basket! He was trying to help me do laundry lmao. I was slayed! I've never seen that before from a cat.
He has set routines for himself as well. He will bug me when it is bed time, telling me it is time for bed. So When I go to bed, he disappears to get a drink of water and use the potty, then he comes to my room and sits on the floor next to the bed staring up at me until I give the nod that he can come up to bed. Same exact routine every night. I can't sleep in without being woke up for breakfast either lol

My Russian Blue is 15 years old and she's still very playful, extremely smart and loving. She used to play fetch as a kitten also but this all stopped once she became an adult. She is, however, the most playful and fun cat I've ever had and she is still extremely beautiful!❤ We love and enjoy her immensely!!!

I had to comment because you mentioned your Russian Blue watching from atop the refrigerator! My Russian Blue, of decades ago, also like to watch from the top of my refrigerator. One time I had a friend over and he came back into the living room and said, "Dude, your cat is on top of the refrigerator; how does he get up there?" I replied, "I have no idea; I have never seen him get up or down from there - he just does."😊

We had an RB who also loved to fetch. Our apartment had a fireplace with a gravel hearth surrounding it, and the previous tenants had thrown bottle caps into the gravel. Our RB pulled every last one of them out of there and brought them to us over the first few weeks after we moved in. She was so smart and so loving. We had her for over 18 years before she finally passed. Best. Cat. Ever.

Yes, I’ve had two pairs of Russian Blue girls over the years and they were brilliant. My daughter had a third pair. They were small, they used to jump up and hang off the door knobs and tried to twist them open between their paws. They were mechanically minded, extremely observant, incredibly intelligent and lovable. 💙💙💙💚💚💙💙💙

That is the ticket of happiness of intelligent breeds. I've had three Siamese cats, all but one had a sidekick. Our last Siamese had a buddy he'd friended at the shelter we found him. They were both young kittens and inseparable. Their bond was like that of 2nd grade best friends. It was an adventure with those two, as the Siamese dawned an idea and the American short hair seemed to conspire: cabinet door opening, window screen removal for late summer evening escape to the back yard, bathroom faucet play but never turning the water off after use, and kitchen counter surfing for leftovers or a forgotten can of open catfood that didn't make the frig ..... don't get me started on laundry or fresh sheets on a bed. They conspired and it was priceless to watch.

    My baby Natalya
    1. She does not play fetch. She doesn’t like to play. She likes to chill and lay around. She has no interest in hunting or anything
    2. She’s so so so shy but now that we’ve bonded so much she’s so loving
    3. I’m her favorite person,,,
    4. Yes she will physically grab my hand with her paw and put it on her, if I stop petting her she looks at me angrily
    5. Yes she’s so smart but she’s a good girl so she doesn’t get into trouble
She’s so elegant and acts like a princess.
(Here’s her backstory: we found her on craigslist when she was a kitten and the people who had her were definitely abusing her. She didn’t like being pet or picked up, and she would run away if you walked up to her. She has signs of trauma even now, but she’s healed so much and loves to be pet and let’s me walk up to her, but I let her sniff my hand before touching her so she has the opportunity to say no and back away)

I received a Russian Blue from my kids and grand kids for 2021 Christmas. He was 6 month, he now is 9 months. Yes, Chia has all the treats you talk about. He loves jumping and catching toy springs I throw to him. He will catch them and bring and lay it at my feet. He loves sleeping with me either above or under the blankets. And boy he loves a lot of attention. Very affectionate.

My RB girl fetches hair ties, too. She's also the only cat my husband isn't allergic to. She's ridiculously sweet and affectionate, drapes herself over my shoulder while I work, is the only cat my kids can pick up and hold, and is also the only cat in my house who allows me to clip her claws. She's goofy and super mischievous. We have to make sure the kids don't leave their toothbrushes on the sink or she'll play with them. She's jumped into the toilet once. She prowls the house in search of cups of water to knock over. She doesn't do regular meows, more like a purring/chirping sound.
We originally had gone to adopt another cat, who is also a sweetheart. As soon as I saw her, I just couldn't leave her cage. We left with two new kittens that day. These cats are bewitching in the best way. ❤️

    Very intelligent and loving cats.

My cat, sockie, goes nuts over playing fetch with hair ties. She has a bunch of them shoved under the refrigerator. She also learns words. And seems to understand them. Shyness? That goes along with picking one person. However, it's one person at a time. She is very picky about the litter box. If it's not up to snuff, she will hold it until she cannot take it anymore. We clean it every other day. She is a heavy cat (not fat) for a normal size house cat. When she pounces, the neighbors downstairs hear it. Sockie thinks she's a pouncing panther. She does strive for attention. She does the "but I'm a cute kitten" guilt trip. Yes. It does seem that all Russian blue kitties act very much alike. I have had many cats in my lifetime. And this cat is special.

OMG I think mine's favorite toys are my daughters' hair ties. He will find them wherever they are and will open their dresser drawers to find more. His laser pointer is his second favorite toy. He knows where I keep it on my desk and will attempt to knock it down by pawing around that location. That's how he tells me "Get the laser pointer! I wanna play!"

We adopted a half RB. Lola certainly seems to possess many of the typical traits and features. Even while only 5mths old, seems more intelligent that most other cats I have lived with. We play tag together around the apartment. Very demanding for attention, follows us everywhere. Has played fetch with scrunched up paper while we were in bed. Don't know she has a favourite. Still so energetic and demanding of our attention she will try and get it from either of us. Certainly not shy. Amazingly calm, inquisitive and accepting of new people being around. She's an amazing cat.

You hit the nail on the head with the traits of the RB. Mine is almost 3 years old and out of all the different breeds of cats my fiancee and I have had, he's definitely one of the ones with the most 'character!' He definitely is an 'alarm clock,' waking you up at the same time every day. He loves to follow into the bathroom, especially. Knows how to open up cabinets, remove, and open cat nip bags. LOL He loves paper bags- hiding inside them or sitting on them. He also makes some of the weirdest noises compared to any other cat we have been fortune enough to own. He enjoys laying on his back and playing with me. He doesn't act vulnerable like most animals do in this position. He also can't get enough of laying completely under the blankets with my girl and I. Thank you for sharing this video, it was a good watch!😁👍

My rescue** RB brother/sister duo are evil geniuses like their namesakes, Boris & Natasha from the Rocky & Bulwinkle Show. One watches me, learns a trick and then teaches it to the other~ like sliding the heavy mirror closet door open to get to the yummy shoelaces!😍😋😹 I put all their toys in a basket and they root through it, toss some aside, find today's favorite, then bring it to me to throw. They get seriously hangry if meals & snacks are late, and remind me with zoomies, roughhousing and MMA body slams! I've had Abbies to Tabbies and the low shed factor is one of the best surprises! Plus ** You don't have to buy crazy expensive kittens from a breeder. Mine were rescued by a Los Feliz (CA) group from a high-kill shelter and I saw another brother/sister and single RBs, too, so they're out there. Go grab a couple and start the fun!

both of my Russian blue’s are terrified of strangers. I had a friend house sit for us and while she was staying in our house for a week she only saw them 3 times. They hid from her when she was home and only ate when she went to work. Loki loves me and puts up with my parents his brother Thor loves both my parents but only puts up with me. Lol Loki also loves to pays fetch with me. They both get angry when we don’t give them attention and they will cry until we play with them. They are both smart and don’t mess with anything they shouldn’t unlike normal cats. They even leave all of our Christmas decorations alone. I love my cats so much they have the most unique personality’s of any cat breed I have had.

He's pretty friendly with guest though he always ends up coming back to me after giving them the first sniff test. I live alone but when I take him to my families house he is friendly to everyone but will follow me around if I get up and leave the room.
Im super jealous of Spike's fetch skills though! Mine loves to play fetch sort of? He loves to chase things I throw then sit on them and look at me until I pick up and throw them again, but he doesnt seem to know to bring it back to me so I end up just walking around my apartment whenever we play.

I have a Russian blue and these traits are spot on. I got her when I was in college and every time I’m on my laptop doing work she would sit next to me and sometimes growl until I pet her. I’ve also had roommates for a while and you can definitely tell she gravitates to a main person as she follows me around everywhere and only goes downstairs if I’m down there. Russian blues are awesome breeds for sure!

My girl Sage has transformed my heart. She is classic RB and she is a perfect charmer. She loves to go out on her leash and meet cat lovers. For a four month old she's brilliant and a dream come true. Literally. I had five dreams about her!! Two were birth dreams as my new daughter before we met. She was abandoned very very young sadly but was the strongest and cutest of the two survivors. I am so lucky we chose each other as we certainly did immediately. My Christmas present of a lifetime.

    • @AnandaSea

She does have certain playing features as in she catches very well like a 3rd baseman. She is not shy but knows cat lovers and today even knew one in a building and as we met not to expect pets because the woman is allergic. I wished for just these traits and am very happy she isn't much of an allergin and had no idea this breed existed. I do need to contain her when she's overly predatory and she has two little carriers. She goes outside covered in two coats to be able to smell and hear and see the world. She isn't very good at not satiating her constant need to be learning. She is young. She is just meditating more as she gets older. She looks at me like she can't stand my interest in watching movies instead of her all day. I too need constant learning and so I can't judge her one bit.

She is also in-your face cat, recently she met for the first time a dog she has never seen, she wanted to play with him and the dog was scared of her... She prefers my husband, she likes to cuddle with him, but prefers to play with me instead. If she does not get attention, she is able to start meowing to call me to the other room for no particular reason

We had a Russian Blue male for 15 years… he is, by FAR, The most intelligent animal either of us has ever known… we have always said he was more human, than cat… I was definitely daddy… His chosen human, that he used to bitch at to get things done… My wife, who only knew him the last four years of his life… well, He fell instantly in love with her… It was the most precious thing I think I’ve ever witnessed in my life, his relationship was totally different with her, he was head over heels in love with her… And never once fussed at her, but always, treated me like his caretaking human, and the one he took care of… And my wife, that was his woman… Lol … on October 1st, we pick up our new FCA registered Russian blue, from a breeder in Harrah Oklahoma… He’s so gorgeous… And he will help us with losing our beloved Oliver… we honestly couldn’t live without a Russian blue in our lives… They are not like cats… At all

Not going to lie, Korats are absolutely amazing and the 2 brothers are polar opposites. I love them to death and would recommend to anyone wanting a blue but can't justify the price tag.

I've had my beautiful Russian Blue 'Spooky' for just over nine years and only found out about his breed five years ago. I used to live in a small apartment in a highrise, so I would take him out to a nearby garden, it was my former landlady who told me what breed he was.
In one picture I have of him he looks purple, in another, while in a plastic crate, he looks a bit green. Since I now live in a basement of a large house, with my female roommate, Susan, he loves to go outside, and he will go to the back door and will run to the door to make sure we see him and to let him out. In the spring & summer, he usually gets his way, he does stay near enough to hear me or Susan call him back, no longer than a couple of hours and he runs to us when called, but he does have a few places to hide, one being under the nieghbors cemet stairs ( he hides there if it starts to rain, or if he is afraid of their back-yard chained up dogs, in fact, if he sees the dogs are there, peeking out and looking for them, if either one of them is there, he won't go out.
Spooky is VERY SMART. He will sit with me on the bed and will do this silly thing tapping me with his paw to getvmy attention if he sees I'm looking too much at my flat-screen Tv, and he knows the word "Treat?" he will run to either of us say that!
It's funny when he comes to me and I say, "Does Spooky Waaant Something?" He knows right away he looks at me when Isay that, it means Treat!
He loves milk, he's very sociable and will be part of the circle listening to every word. He sometimes sleeps with me or Susan, but he also has a couple of areas, he will jump into my tall closet, or go sit on 'his' chair in the shower room, if he wants to not be bothered. About two years ago, late at night, about 2:30 AM, I was awakend by the sound of the glass door of the shower opening, I thought it might have been a person that I forgot I had over, or even a possible burgaler, so I trepidly walked as quietly as I could, holding a hammer to use, if I had to protect myself.
I got closer and said outloud, "I hear you in there, I'll call the cops, I've got my phone!" No answer - just silence and I was petrified, especially because I had a home invasion only a month before. Since Susan was in a deep sleep in her room, with the door closed, I was ready to protect us, so I peeked around the door, phone ready on speed dial, and...
There was Spooky, on the inside of the glass shower, licking it like there was no tomorrow! All I saw was this silly cat tongue, Slurp, Slurp! "What the hell are you doing, you goofy cat?!" I went and got Susan and we were laughing hysterically! We called him our "Shower-licking cat!"
She took a photo, I would post it here if I knew where it was, but it's after 4AM -Spooky with me on the bed sleeping. He loves attention and he will step onto this plastic two-step thing we use to reach our tall cupboards and wait for us to shower him with petting attention and tell him how good looking he is!
We live in a very old house and every winter he catches mice, especially at night, if he hears even a little bit of sound from them he's right on it - lately he's caught about nine of them since September, and he doesn't allways kill them, and I have to pick them up with Kleenex and take them outside. Spooky definitely knows the word mouse and we treat him when he gets one.
Spooky is a very quiet cat, his 'meows' are quiet, and it's sometimes hard to hear him purr, but he does!
He whines lately when we don't let him out because he does not seem to comprehend that the outside is not warm and cozy like the inside! We are in Winnipeg (Also called Winterpeg) Manitoba, it can get very cold here, mind you it's much warmer than usual here, so we let him out
a bit more than usual. We are very much like parents with him. I was also thinking of writing a kid's book about him called 'Spooky Goes To New York!'
Thank you for reading his story here!

Last summer a Russian Blue started visiting our gazebo and sleeping on the chairs. As she had a collar with her name, Dawk, we knew she belonged to someone but she was stayed around so we started feeding her. After hanging around a month my wife put an ad on a lost and found site run by a local animal welfare agency. Someone quickly responded it was their cat and they showed up to collect her the next day. Within 6 hours she was back at our house so we called them again but they did not come for her for almost 2 weeks. When fall came she decided she wanted inside and has been with us ever since. She can be aloof at times but loves to head butt and rub her body against you head. She also loves helping my wife doing yard work and follows her around like a dog when she goes for walks. Overall she's very intelligent, and can open doors with lever handles on them. As the original owners haven't come back for her for months, it looks like we've been adopted.

I’m glad you mention that “you are a skeptic when generalizing cat breeds” while cats do inherit specific traits cats can be raised and trained anyway you want and they also have their own unique personality regardless. Now while we have a VERY intelligent Russian blue kitten that surprised me daily the concept of creating a generalized database for cats is crazy because we also have a Turkish van that is almost the opposite of what is expected of him based on the generalizations and the same about our Egyptian Mau 3 Tabby / MC. Thier personalities do not match their given traits. They are individuals similarly to the way we all are

She is extremely playful, loves to jump in the air when playing. She loves to make “trill” or “chirp” sounds to talk to my husband and I so she’s very vocal. She loves to follow either of us around the house or lead us around the house to tell us something wether it’s that she’s hungry or where specifically she would like to be played with at that moment. She is not so much a lap cat but every couple days she decides she needs some lap time or to sleep with us at night. It seems like every cat is different even within their breed haha

Hello from Germany. Glad to be a new subscriber to your wonderful channel with Spike. Was it hard to secure Spike? I have decided and done lots of research about what cat breed to get and have come to the conclusion that it is the Russian Blue. But unfortunately, they are not so available in Germany. Hi! Thanks so much and welcome to the channel. We wanted a Russian Blue because we love cats but my partner is severely allergic. We first looked into Russian Blue rescue associations, but it’s very difficult to find pure Russian Blues that are guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. We then looked into registered breeders on tica.org, which provides a registry of breeders that follow a code of ethics to run their cattery, which is how we got Spike. Sorry I can’t be much help in finding Russian Blues specifically in Germany, but I will definitely make a future video going into more detail about our experience!

Usually at 2 or 3 a.m. She was also very sociable from the git-go, talkative, demanding, stubborn, smart, and totally devoted to me - my sweet barnacle. I (My first two RB's were non-social, terrified of strangers, definitely Mommy's girls.) Will be getting a RB kitten, hopefully, this weekend - can't wait to see her personality unfold. New now 5 month old, RB kitten is personality plus - not shy one iota, super smart, stubborn as heck, curious to the ninth degree, silly, does a lot of goofy crab walks with poofy tail, fetches like mad, loves paper balls and feather balls, attacks any stuffed toy with vigor, and, unfortunately, thinks it is great fun to jump on my back, no matter what I am doing (like cooking at the stove or washing dishes or putting her food dishes on the floor). She was very outgoing from Day One, very loving, knows no strangers. My sister described her as a little pistol. I liken her to Rocky the Flying Squirrel with attitude. Love her to bits.

I live alone with her so she's not very socialized and she hides if my friends come over. If she is lounging in a sunbeam in the front room when the doorbell rings or a UPS truck pulls up, she will quickly stalk out of the room while growling! She is very intelligent and playful, and loves being covered with fabric and being in small spaces if there's more than one exit. So, we got a "box in the desert" kitten two years ago. We named her Azul and moved it to Zuzu due to her dark husky blue eyes that changed to green as she grew. After some research we had determined that no doubt she is a Russian Blue. She doesnt play fetch but plays heavily and can have the time of her life all by herself (when she wants) She is super shy to others but as described she joined my hip and has become my shadow. I am the one and the entire family knows it. Zuzu will whine till her wants are met. Love, food or bedtime. She tells us when she is ready for us all to go to bed, and she knows when its time to eat and tries to speed the process up. She has the schedule down pat and follows that trait perfectly. She has a routine that started when she was a kitten. I would put her to bed in the guest room (we have another cat and this was how we would help keep them apart at times). She did a small circle and flopped into my chest as I lay on my side and we spooned all night. Now, 22 months later, she's in our bed now and needs her (my) blanket, me in my spot and my wife in hers, she will do short small circle turns and flop half onto me and half on the bed. She'll gnaw on the blanked like a kitten pulling wool (still does it) and kneed out the spot with her paws. I rub her back and wife scratches her neck. If the flop isn't right, my wife's not there or not hard at work meeting the queen's needs or I'm not doing a good enough job, she'll start the process over and clearly let us know which one needs to improve. Its the cutest dang thing ever. She is super smart, opens cabinets, tries to get doors and I've seen her turn on/off lights by the wall switch by jumping. Although I think she just sees it and wants to tap it as opposed to knowing it equates light. She also is an attacker. Rarely in a serious trying to hurt you way but since back when she started her flopping she's been one to soft bite and hold your hand or arm in place with her claw paw. Sometimes she will get hit with cat instinct and use those back legs to kick up. When her ears pin back, those eyes glaze over with a passion for a fight and her tail start flicking, she gon' get ya. But never in a true hurt you manor. Her and the other cat usually get along by just ignoring each other but they play fight at times and one will be a bully for an hour then the other one starts it up. It escalates at times but neither of them stand to fight it out, they'll run away and calm down before it ever goes too crazy. Cat stuff. She hugs, she barks, she wines, she loves, she talks to me and responds to my words, we fully converse sometimes. She'll tell you when she is not happy with you, or glare like you called her a name. Her personality is so unique but her traits are almost perfectly aligned. The only thing is that she is not a quiet RB, she is extremely vocal. Everything else is Russian Blue as written in a text book.

She's a flopper and a stalker and returns balls with a slick paw to get me to play with her. She is very queenly and has trouble with two things, staying off the table and not climbing curtains when she actually wants to go outside and watch things. She handles the cold and she meows for other cat people when they come by as we go on walks with her leash. Only four months old and goes in the car well and on leash. She's very considerate for an adolescent cat and I am so happy she was rescued. She was the strongest survivor and definitely the cutest of the two who survived being dumped as very little ones. I have to let her nurse a certain blanket and get kissed every few seconds to make it real love. 😥 I am her chosen mother. ✨️
