    Lord and Taylor was just in a weird position as a retailer. Macy’s is almost as nice, while Nordstrom is just a little bit nicer. Both of those retailers have found ways to be successful in current times, and ate Lord and Taylor’s market. Macy’s has been moving slightly more upscale in their most successful stores, while Nordstrom is experimenting with lower-level luxury. This left no room for Lord and Taylor in the market.

      Agreed. Lord and Taylor’s re emergence as a specialty boutique retailer may save the name and heritage. If they opened boutiques instead of full line department stores, they would probably capture new market share with millennials. But it only works if they stock their stores with new merchandise that you can’t find at traditional department stores. And they only need 1-2 stores per market this time, specifically in premier shopping districts. Suburban malls in the B-C category need not apply.

    Unlike the random Oriental Rugs that Sears and Macy’s have at liquidations, I can kinda see why Lord & Taylor and furs might go together.

    Honestly, COVID killed any chance of traditional departments stores making a comeback after the disastrous 2010s, only the high upscale ones and Macy's will survive in the future, the rest will go out this decade I hate to say. Anyhow, thanks for all the content you've made this year as always and hope you have a good 2021!

      @@LostDepartments Of all of the non upscale traditional department stores, Macy's is pretty much in the best shape in all of them and could easily experience a turnaround with the right corporate decisions but we'll see what happens to them as the 2020s progress, And yes, I expect a lot of closures and possibly a few more chain liquidations in 2021 as the aftermath of COVID continues to wreck havoc among the retail community

    It seems department stores are a thing of the past, here in the UK the latest department store chain Debenhams is currently closing down.
    The Lord + Taylor sign outside the store I couldn't read well at all, very poor graphic design. But the stores interior was in great shape and the high quality fixtures seem very new based on some of the designs. I can see a few of those fittings looking good in an apartment.

    Sad thing is Nbc was getting Von Maur, but amc decided to take the space. What can happen is Von can build where macy’s was. That would be my dream. Unfortunately but also not, it’s at the glen. They can move to nbc with a bigger better location. Von Maur doesn’t build modern looking stores, their new ones still have those great features which is ultra rare now.

Northbrook Court has 80 stores, and seems to be doing well, and it’s only going to get better during the holidays if this variant doesn’t get out of hand. And I’m glad the redevelopment stopped, they should just put a new anchor there, they don’t need a outdoor space, look at Woodfield.

    I would occasionally shop at Lord & Taylor in Manhattan on 5th Avenue. It was always flooded with tourists, mostly Asians. The goods were high quality but expensive. You might find something decent on sale. Almost everything was clothing and accessories. At Christmas they did have Santa but this really wasn't a store for children, but for older upper class women - the ladies who lunch crowd.

      In my view Lord & Taylor's downfall became inevitable when it sold its iconic Fifth Avenue store to WeWork at the beginning of 2019. WeWork, seriously? Now Amazon will be using the building for offices.

    • @ccbsnyc
      @ccbsnyc 3 года назад

      You would think Amazon would find a more adaptable Midtown building for its offices. WeWork must be breathing a sigh of relief to get rid of this Turkey and its mortgage.

    Lord and Taylor was nothing special. It used to be a nice specialty store like Parisian, but its prices were way too high for the merchandise that could also be bought in Macy's with a coupon. Its store exteriors and classy font made middle class American feel like they were shopping at Saks but for less, but inside the clothes were frumpy, understocked, and just mismatched with what shoppers really wanted.
