    I basically grew up with this mall. We lived in Lake Zurich until the early 90's and I remember at that time Woodfield had dark brown brick and earth tone carpeting. The mid-level section had all those crazy ramps that would go from level and had terraces that overlooked the main atrium area. I vaguely remember that there was a fountain in one section, and a tensegrity sculpture (basically a bunch of chromed poles that held each other up in tension with a bunch of cables) at the Marshall Fields entrance (which I think is the Macy's now.) I also remember the sunken 'conversation-pit' seating areas in some of the lower level open areas.

    Something I’ve noticed as a theme is that any mall owned by Simon is almost always doing well.

    • @tburrrg2502
      @tburrrg2502 3 года назад +8

      It’s because Simon is absolutely ruthless and aggressive to tenants. They have iron clad contracts and run a tight ship financially. I don’t blame them for how they handle things, clearly they know what they are doing, but boy are they tough!

    I grew up going to this mall and lived in Schaumburg until I was 34. Always went there at least once or twice a week. Woodfield was always like a mini-city by itself. I think it skewed my view of the overall health of malls because until I moved away, I didn't realize how many malls were dying because I could always count on going to Woodfield. My friends are like "most malls are dead," which I really didn't experience until moving to another state.

    In high school, I learned to drive in the Woodfield parking lot when it was still under construction. Originally the mall interior was a lot of dark brown brick, red carpeting in the octagon conversation pits, and a waterfall you could walk under! One of my classmate’s parents opened one of the original stores right off the main court, it was a hippie shop called The Plum Tree. It was tucked underneath the famous disappearing extra 2nd floor. I loved having Marshall Fields so close to my parents’ when I visited home from college. Thank you for this video, the mall still looks great, almost 50 years after opening. It has been totally Simon-ized, all white interior. In my opinion, the updates that Simon made to it are a big improvement, it feels more spacious and peaceful. Even the Sears store looks prosperous and inviting.

    I stumbled across your channel a few weeks ago and I want to thank you for your work, your quality, and research. Malls have always been a comfort to me, and now more than ever I realize how important they've been to me and how much I miss them, in the pandemic era. I'm based in Mid-Missouri and I've visited Woodfield Mall many times as it is the closest Zara to us right now. It's a great mall! But thanks so much for highlighting it and other malls and telling a better story. Not ALL malls are dying! At least not here in the Midwest. In the east there were too many malls built and some will have to close. All malls will have to evolve as the consumers want entertainment and mixed use properties beyond just shopping. It's exciting to see you feature this and I can enjoy from the comfort of my Android TV! In addition, there is a mall in Fairview Heights, Illinois called St. Clair Square Mall that was really nice and busy the last time I was there about a year ago. Would be a great property to check out. Another option would be outdoor shopping options like the Mag Mile or outlet malls, as these will probably be the future of shopping, imho. Anyway, you're great. Keep up the good work! Some of the best camera work and narration of retail videos I've seen online. ;)

    This is one of the most beautiful malls I have seen on RUclips. The mall of Georgia near where I live is large and alive, but it is not very appealing. The food court at the mall of Georgia is laid out like a high school cafeteria or a refugee feeding center. The overall design of the mall of Georgia was made with zero creativity. Very square, harsh, rigid, and unappealing. Unlike the warm and comforting appeal of Woodfield mall. You can tell with Woodfield mall that there was a lot of love put into its design. The mall of Georgia had no love or passion in its design. It was designed almost with the attitude of “here’s your big mall. Now get over here and buy you peasants”. Kind of like if you are homeless and someone tells you to live in a barn. That’s the attitude the developers of mall of Georgia seemed to have. The Woodfield mall was designed with passion and love and respect for its shoppers. People can feel that and is probably why Woodfield mall thrives today.

The funny thing is, I worked at the Gift Gate part time when I got older - twice! Once when I'd barely turned 20, and again when I returned to the Chicago area after many years and was in my mid 30s! By that time, it had changed ownership and was doing poorly. I understand it's no longer there at all (thanks for running it into the ground, Nakajima). I mean, I'm guessing you can't try on any clothes, which is the main point of going to stores in person vs buying online. And I doubt you can walk around while drinking a coffee from starbucks or wherever. I rented an apartment in Prospect Hts in early 2000s. Randhurst was still pretty decent back then. It’s a shame Malls are struggling across America. Whenever I travel to Asia and seen enormous and trendy Malls popping up everywhere, I feel sad.

      A book about Randhurst was published about ten years ago, and I believe the Mount Prospect Historical Society sells copies.

    Actually, Allstate Arena and the Convention Center are closer to O'hare than the mall. (And it sounds like you're pronouncing Zurich Insurance as "Zurk"?). So many of the big stores have closed, such as Sears & Lord & Taylor, which is a shame. Used to shop here a lot on weekends up to a few years ago, as well as a lot of the stores on Golf Road (and many are gone, like Linens N Things, Borders and Tower Records). They did do a great job refurbishing/updating/expanding the mall over the years. With many people preferring online shopping, malls are having a tough time these days.

    Remember A&W, the spencer store, tower records I think? Is the smoothie shop by jc penny still there surf city squeeze? I used to work at the Brookstone, that closed, there used to be a sharper image too. Rainforest Cafe and that Mars restaurant what!! They had a Bose store lol and oh shit remember the "Sony Store" wow what a place!

    Ngl this mall has fallen off in recent times, in 2013 it was literally packed since it had every store and every attraction imagineable and the Microsoft store was short lived since it was removed around a year ago and A&F, and that weird marble front store with the weird cursive font lord and Taylor died and closed their stores so there has been even less traffic in the mall since then and because of covid the mall really took a nosedive in my opinion
